Is long hair more attractive and youthful, in your opinion? What length is your hair? How attractive do you feel?

After having long hair for the last 30+ years, I recently got mine cut to shoulder length.

I can still tie it up so its not super short, but I have a tiny ponytail when I do.

Anyway, I'm only 35 so not that old but...

Celebrities seem to all have long, bouncy, glossy hair. My hair was nice the day it was blow dried but as soon as I stepped outside if it was raining or my second day hair was not great.

I really did fancy a change but I'm wondering if I feel less attractive with shorter hair, I don't really know why? Maybe I did subconsciously hide behind it.

So my question, do you think length of hair has any bearing on attractiveness? Not that it's all about looks, I know that, but ykwim!

How do you feel about your hair and looks?

I do actually like my new hairstyle and that's the thing it's a style rather then just long hair but I suddenly feel different to what I'm used to and maybe a bit invisible. Sad

I'm 50, I have long thick blonde hair. I sometimes think about going pixie, then consider how stressed I would be with the grow out period. Long hair gives me options, plaited, pony or just loose and wavy.

I've just had to have about 6 or 7 inches chopped off my long hair as my hair dresser ruined it trying to dye it (went green, then orange, then muddy-coloured, then after 3 colourings in one week it all broke off and I had to go elsewhere for damage limitation!). It's now just under collar bone length and I really don't like it. I suit a bob or long hair and am now deciding which way to go. I do feel more feminine with longer hair and I like that can curl it when I go out, or just pull it back when I am in a rush.

Am 38 BTW .

I think it really depends on the persons face and the cut itself. Some of the short cuts I see on women in thier 40's and 50's age them but other people it suits them and makes them look younger. On the other hand so do some of the long styles (particuarly if they have done a bad job at diy dye). I think it's got less to do with age and more to do with what suits a person.

For me the shortest I can go is sholder length. Anything shorter does not suit me and makes my round face look really chubby. I think some people with great bone structure really suit a pixie crop. I do love the look but it just doesn't suit me at all.

My hair was recently bra strap length and I loved it but the ends were really damaged so I got it cut to sholder length. I plan to grow it longer again but hopefully it will be in better condition this time round.

mrstweefromtweesville · 23/05/2015 16:04

Yes, I have long hair and I feel youthful and absolutely gorgeous.

MsMcWoodle · 23/05/2015 16:56

I have really really short hair and look rather nice. Everytime I have a trim I look 10 years younger. It's quite weird.

HoolaWoman · 23/05/2015 17:05

Agree with Bonsoir that it matters very much what shape face/features you have and what your hair texture is like.

DD looks amazing with a pixie crop because she has heart-shaped face, high cheek bones, big brown bambi-esque eyes and a little pointed chin. Her hair is chestnut brown but quite course in texture so it holds the shape of a crop really well iyswim? It made her look very distinctive, like a 1960s French actress Smile

Annoyingly she has succumbed to the masses and has spent the last year growing it out, so now just has straight plain, bra-strap length hair just like all of her friends. Dull as anything.

Oly4 · 23/05/2015 17:12

I'm 38 and have long hair. Still suits me, makes me look young I feel, my DH loves it.
No plans to cut it whatever my age

noddyholder · 23/05/2015 17:16

Depends on your face shape and skin plus I think slim people suit pixie hair more. I am 49 and still have longish hair I prefer it Of all my friends all have long bar one She has a beautiful face abs us tall and slim so looks great I would fear the Pat Butcher effect on me!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 23/05/2015 17:22

I have had hair ranging from very short to nearly waist length. At the moment it is the standard fifty something hair cut - just past the shoulders, graduated a bit round the face and highlighted. It is in good condition and very thick but I am bored with it! I am thinking that for my 55th birthday later in the year I might just go back to short.....but like Noddyholder, I too fear the Pat Butcher effect!

quirkychick · 23/05/2015 17:31

I agree with Bonsoir too. It depends on your hair, face, style etc.

OfficerVanHalen I have long, thick, curly hair too. I think shorter hair is harder on wavy/curly hair. I much prefer it long, but it needs to be in good condition. I love that photo, her hair looks fab.

There is no right or wrong, really. It just depends on your personal style.

noddyholder · 23/05/2015 17:42

I get tempted by fringes but have resisted the last few years but I wear my hair up must days so one length suits

wfrances · 23/05/2015 17:42

mine is long ,straight, dark ,blunt heavy fringe - easy to plait , put up and style.
expensive to keep though
i have to have it done every 5 weeks .
ive mostly had long hair but once went to a very modern salon when i was younger and they chopped it all off -Martika style -
i had endless positive comments even off strangers in the street but i felt so exposed.
so long hair for me.

Cocolepew · 23/05/2015 17:44

My hair is like a combination of these 2. The sides are similar to the dark one, though mine may be a bit shorter, but I wear the top and fringe like the second one, its also the colour if the second one.
I don't agree that round faces don't suit short hair. I look like a chipmunk storing nuts in my cheeks and look ok.
The medium length hair, shortish bob -bob drag my face down. I had it shoulder length a couple of years ago and it looked good but I get bored very easily and dye it a lot. Its much easier, for me, to keep it in good condition when short (I cut and dye my own hair)

I like that am envious!

Eliza22 · 23/05/2015 18:04

Am adding two pics as I had my long hair cut 2 weeks ago I to a crop. Today is the first day I've liked it tbh which is odd cause I had it short for years before my final attempt to grow it. When grown, I felt a bit "girly" with it for a 53 yr old and it spent a lot of time scraped into a pony. It took ages to dry, where as this dries naturally and requires nothing. At all. I did feel "old" for the first few days and like I'd had my femininity chopped off. It's getting better!

Eliza you have amazing bone structure and features and look gorgeous either way Smile

GlitzAndGigglesx · 23/05/2015 18:50

I personally prefer long hair and find it suits me best. I haven't coloured it in over a year so it's pretty much back to its chocolate brown colour and glossy. It's got a natural wave on the ends which can look a mess if I don't put serum in after washing. I've gone shorter before and really don't suit it. I do like choppy bobs though

Greengardenpixie · 23/05/2015 18:52

I have long hair. Its almost at my bra strap and im 47. I suit my hair up and have been told this many times so atm i wouldnt contemplate making it really short. I think she looks lovely with short hair:

*Sorry long hair ha ha!!

Kelly1814 · 23/05/2015 18:53

I feel like there is a thing where you can't have longer hair past a certain age, my Mum always used to say this and has very unattractive short hair, IMO. I hate it when people get their hair cut short just because they are a certain age.

I'm almost 39 and my hair is just past shoulder length.

areyoubeingserviced · 23/05/2015 18:57

Eliza, I think that you look great with short hair .

Cocolepew · 23/05/2015 19:02

Me too Eliza, you look like Robin Wright.
I have a crush on her, I might start stalking you around the boards

Eliza22 · 23/05/2015 19:06

Thanks.... I did feel de-feminised at first though!
