Is long hair more attractive and youthful, in your opinion? What length is your hair? How attractive do you feel?

After having long hair for the last 30+ years, I recently got mine cut to shoulder length.

I can still tie it up so its not super short, but I have a tiny ponytail when I do.

Anyway, I'm only 35 so not that old but...

Celebrities seem to all have long, bouncy, glossy hair. My hair was nice the day it was blow dried but as soon as I stepped outside if it was raining or my second day hair was not great.

I really did fancy a change but I'm wondering if I feel less attractive with shorter hair, I don't really know why? Maybe I did subconsciously hide behind it.

So my question, do you think length of hair has any bearing on attractiveness? Not that it's all about looks, I know that, but ykwim!

How do you feel about your hair and looks?

I do actually like my new hairstyle and that's the thing it's a style rather then just long hair but I suddenly feel different to what I'm used to and maybe a bit invisible. Sad

I have thick curly hair and want to get it cut into a shoulder length bob have been thinking about it for years but keep putting it off. I look hideous with short hair my texture doesn't work with it. If my hair was soft and silky then I think it can look gorgeous but sadly not for me. Currently my hair is long and and I think I suit it.

Cocolepew · 23/05/2015 11:22

I've had both long and short hair, but short suits me best.
At the moment it is shaved in an undercut at the sides and shaved up the back with a longer heavy top and fringe. I'm 46 and get nothing but compliments on my hair.

pinkfrocks · 23/05/2015 12:16

I think it's very hard to generalise.
35 is young so age is not the issue OP.

I think on some women hair that is way beyond shoulder length looks a bit child-like. Once is gets past the top of the shoulders it usually just 'hangs' a bit like a curtain and I don't think that flatters many people.

I had hair that was between chin length and top of my shoulders for years then at 45-ish went short like a 'Princess Di' look which now looking back was ageing. I've now let it grow to shoulder length- just hitting my collar bones but long layers and everyone says I look younger (in late 50s.)

Coco, I think I want your haircut Grin

Cocolepew · 23/05/2015 12:58

I am babe tbh.

I'm 38 with very long, curly hair. I have always had long hair. Well, after a disastrous foray into a shorter style aged around 13 which saw me with a 'pube-head egg in egg-cup' monstrosity until the fucker grew out anyway.

In fact, my daughter and I measured out hair from kind of half-way down our respective heads just the other day.

Hers- 22 inches, straight.

Mine- 28 inches, curly.

I need a life. And probably a hair cut.

daftyburd · 23/05/2015 13:21

I am going to be a terrible fence sitter but...I genuinely believe if you like your hair it's length doesn't matter. You are going to look confident and gorgeous anyway. I like so many different hairstyles long and short.
I have a square face but a pointy chin. My hairdresser described it as a "square heart". I look boxy with short hair so prefer it longer on me. I currently have a heavy fringe with the rest long. It's very versatile and I can wave it, have it straight, fringe down or pulled back. It doesn't stop me admiring very short hairstyles on others. Off the top of my head Halle Berry and Emma Watson (young though) are two who look more beautiful with short hair than long.

HoolaWoman · 23/05/2015 13:31

I've had my hair all lengths and most colours, though I'm naturally blonde.

It was hip-length whilst at university with a spiral perm (it was 1989, okay). I used to turn a few heads especially when in my black bustier top, micro denim shorts and DMs Grin

Through my twenties I had it cropped really short and almost white blonde a la Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. Then had it deep red for a while.

When I got married it was champagne blonde, and cut in a classic bob.

Then had it cropped shorter, ash blonde hi-lites and sort of a bit flicky and choppy. It looked good but could easily look too messy if not careful.

Most recently I have had it in a longer layered bob. Still ash blonde hi-lites, but the layers give it plenty of texture and some lift at the roots. I feel more groomed and more feminine than when it was cropped.

Floisme · 23/05/2015 13:48

I look way better with short hair and always have done.

I think short to shoulder length looks best on most women I see. I don't think ultra long hair is flattering on very many women (and that includes celebs). It doesn't frame your face or do anything but hang there and most of us need a bit more help than that. It must be hard to keep it in good condition too.

niminypiminy · 23/05/2015 14:00

Mine's been long once in my life but when I had it long I mostly wore it up. Before that, and since, it's been short, mostly in a Jean Seberg-style crop --- I hate, hate, hate the term 'pixie cut', so cutesy and little-girl-y. Anwyay, every time I try to have some other kind of style it ends up going back to a crop, so I think that's really what suits me.

But, actually, I don't really like long hair that much. I think that look that's so fashionable, long, centre-parted hair that's a bit wavy is soooo boring. Especially on young women -- if you see a woman under 20 with short hair she looks so individual and interesting because all the other girls have got long hair.

Marmaladybird · 23/05/2015 14:08

Mine is long and I do feel more feminine when it's like this. My hair looks and feels better when it's shorter though. I'm thinking about going back to long bob that's longer at the front.

I had it cut to my ears once and cried outside the hairdressers. Short hair makes me feel a bit manly with my broad shoulders, it just doesn't work on me. I can appreciate a lovely short cut on the right face/shape though.

mrsdavidbowie · 23/05/2015 14:12

I haven't had long hair for 45 years since I was ten.
Its very straight and heavy, and as I'm tall it just lengthens my face

I have it cut about jawlength with lots of choppiness and a heavy fringe to hide wrinkles.
When I was younger I had pixie crops but I wouldn't feel comfortable with that now

EustaciaPickles · 23/05/2015 14:38

  1. I've had it short and long and mid.
  1. currently growing it out, as I like to mix it up Grin
  1. Re: attraction, I seem to get an equal share of attention at all lengths. I think there are so many more factors than "long good short bad" or vice versa - whether or not it suits ones face, general style etc, etc.
  1. I've had it very short and tended to go for dramatic classic styles (red fitted dress, plain black flats and it looked AMAZING).

I like the attention it brings to my face rather than my face (and no I'm not some high cheekboned model or an Emma Watson lookalike) I think I'll use an Alice band as my hair grows so I can the same THIS IS MY MUG look.

I would say I would find the type of "man" who indicates he only prefers long hair to be attractive very plebby and undesirable full stop, so short hair is quite a good screening mechanism for them.

(but I want it long now so I can play with styling it and for a change so unfortunately I have to lose that Sad)

EustaciaPickles · 23/05/2015 14:39

(sic - rather than my face being "part of the hair")

JessiePinkman · 23/05/2015 14:48

Ohh I would love short hair the pic up thread is stunning. I know lots of women with short hair it looks amazing but they're all beautiful anyway. My face is too round...

itsonlysubterfuge · 23/05/2015 14:53

My hair is down to my bottom, it's curly, and purple. I'm 28. I am not attractive, but I am and have always been fat, which has always made me feel unattractive. Usually my hair has no bearing on how attractive I feel, but if it's very frizzy then I feel more self conscious.

Blazing88 · 23/05/2015 15:02

I think short hair can be incredibly ageing. (Nicola Sturgeon anyone?)

Unless it's a pixie style cut or you're Frankie from The Saturdays.

I don't know why some women get to 35 and immediately think they need to lop it all off!? ?!

Short hair can be fab, but you need to be very trendy, very cutting edge fashion wise imo to be able to carry off a short do and make it look desirable. Too many choose Deidre Barlow type short.

I might add..my mum has short hair. Now she's in her 60's, she looks good. However, she's had that style since she was 32 ish, and looked very very old for her age very very early! Only now is she the right 'age' for her hair!

Bonsoir · 23/05/2015 15:05

There aren't any hard and fast rules about hair - different people suit different styles and personality is as important as physique when matching a hairstyle to a person.

A really good, reliable hairdresser is a must.

Blazing88 · 23/05/2015 15:06

Nice short hairstyles

EustaciaPickles · 23/05/2015 15:08

Nicola Sturgeon is an incredibly successful politician not the face of L'Oreal: her appearance shouldn't be up for discussion.

Blazing88 · 23/05/2015 15:11

Awful short hair!!!

Yes, good on her, but come on, how many 40 something women look like her?!

BestIsWest · 23/05/2015 15:12

Mine is a bit like this but not red. here

Harverina · 23/05/2015 15:17

I personally prefer long hair. I have however got mid length hair, so neither short or long.

My hair is too flat and rubbish to be long. I would love longer hair so that I can curl it. I am so lousy at doing my hair though. Occasionally I grow it, which takes ages and then I realise (again!) that I can't pull it off.

I can't cope with the flatness Hmm

Blazing88 · 23/05/2015 15:27

Eustacia Oh for goodness sake! She was just someone who is in the public eye who has that kind of short hair cut that is bloody awful. That's all!!!

I actually quite like the woman and think she's very good at what she does. She is in the public eye though, so she came to mind.

Blazing88 · 23/05/2015 15:28

best that is nice hair, like it!
