Is long hair more attractive and youthful, in your opinion? What length is your hair? How attractive do you feel?

After having long hair for the last 30+ years, I recently got mine cut to shoulder length.

I can still tie it up so its not super short, but I have a tiny ponytail when I do.

Anyway, I'm only 35 so not that old but...

Celebrities seem to all have long, bouncy, glossy hair. My hair was nice the day it was blow dried but as soon as I stepped outside if it was raining or my second day hair was not great.

I really did fancy a change but I'm wondering if I feel less attractive with shorter hair, I don't really know why? Maybe I did subconsciously hide behind it.

So my question, do you think length of hair has any bearing on attractiveness? Not that it's all about looks, I know that, but ykwim!

How do you feel about your hair and looks?

I do actually like my new hairstyle and that's the thing it's a style rather then just long hair but I suddenly feel different to what I'm used to and maybe a bit invisible. Sad

You do really suit it it looks fab

MamaLazarou · 23/05/2015 19:37

My hair is curly so if I wear it short I just look like a clown.

Am very jealous of women who can pull off short hair.

doggydaft · 23/05/2015 22:06

I'm 43 and had my bra strap length hair cut into a short crop about a year ago.
I have lots of grey in my dark hair and when long it was horribly over dyed and "witchy" looking.
I'm told that my hair cut has taken years off me Smile and its now shiny and natural looking.
I love my short look, easy to keep/style and makes me feel great.

Sallystyle · 23/05/2015 22:18

I have short hair. Very short one side, longer side fringe.

I was growing it out but it looked shit. I got it all cut off last week again.

I do sometimes wear a long half wig and I get a lot more attention from men (not that I am after it but I do get noticed more when I am wearing it).

I suit short hair and for my thick and curly frizzy hair it is easier to manage. I do have to wear more make up with short hair though.

I don't imagine I will attempt to grow it out again. I feel equally attractive both ways. It does make me laugh though how I get more attention with long hair.

quirkychick · 23/05/2015 22:23

Me too MamaLZarou. I had it short once in my 20s and it took so much effort to style and was a nightmare to grow out as it is so thick it needed lots of layers.

Eliza you look lovely both ways!

My hair was once very dark brown, but I have dyed it for years as it is very grey underneath. Last year I had it lightened by a few shades and it seems to get a lot of love this colour, so I guess it looks good. I do have a good hairdresser who has fabulous products which make my wild, curly hair shiny.

Eliza22 · 23/05/2015 22:24

U2 I agree, I did get attention with longer hair but at 53, it wasn't the attention I wanted. Felt a bit MILF-ish. I feel like short hair on a 53 yr old is quite mumsy but then, I AM a mum and not in my "man attracting" years anymore. DH would disagree, of course Wink

Strictlyison · 23/05/2015 22:30

I like to have a hair style that I can wear in many different ways - I like change, so I feel better with longer hair that I can put back, in a low bun, a high bun, curly or straight. I have thick curly hair and I have recently discovered how much improvement you can make by changing shampoo - now using sulphate free shampoo and re-discovered my curls. I feel more feminine with longer hair, and probably more 'attractive', and feel more beautiful. I've had short hair before and felt exposed, and I could only do my hair in one style.

Eliza22 · 23/05/2015 22:42

Strictly I understand the feeling of "exposure". For very short hair you've either to have strong or distinctive facial features or be very confident IMO.

noddyholder · 23/05/2015 22:59

Some of my single 50 ish friends definitely do attract men and always seem to be going on dates long or short hair!

Floisme · 23/05/2015 23:03

Any rule based on your age rather than how you look is stupid, in my opinion. But I do think that if your face is getting saggy, then long hair can drag it down even further.

My hair was already short but I've just had a couple of extra inches off and I'm really pleased with how it looks. It means you see my cheekbones before you notice my jawline.

But I doubt whether you need to be worrying about that at 35.

MrsGuyGarvey · 23/05/2015 23:14

I think it depends on your hair, my twin sister and I have very different hair. I have lots of thick hair that looks much better long so long as I have it cut regularly. Dsis has much finer hair than me and hers looks fab cut short, really brings out her cheekbones. Obviously we're the same age and although not identical we do look very similar facially so it's more to do with the hair than your age.

I'm 38. Have spent this year, so far, growing out a short bob and it is now sitting above my shoulders.
Something is telling me I should grow it before I'm 40. No idea why I feel this way.
The trouble is all the styles I lust after are bobs - sienna Miller, Sadie Frost etc...
So I would say I feel more attractive and more like me with short hair.

pinkfrocks · 24/05/2015 09:27

I think what is vital is to have a good cut whether it is short or long.
Too many older women with short hair have it in a 'masculine' style .
I think some older women- eg Twiggy, Lulu, Nigella- look good with shoulder length hair. Some- like Judi Dench- can get away with a pixie crop. There isn't one rule because we all have different faces, hair texture, hair colour and being small or tall is also a factor. Very short women look swamped with long hair and overweight women (IMO) don't suit very long hair either as it just adds to the overall 'bulk'.

buggerthebotox · 24/05/2015 09:38

I think short hair can look good on anyone as long as it has some volume and soft layers. Short hair can look "helmetty" and hard at any age. I look older in my passport photo with a "bubble cut" at 17 than I do now...Grin

cece · 24/05/2015 09:50

Eliza - I like the short hair. I think it makes you look younger.

Eliza22 · 24/05/2015 10:58

Smile thanks. It's taken some getting used to this time! I'm overweight ATM so, that could be it....nothing to hide behind.

Blazing88 · 24/05/2015 13:43

Eliza your short hair is gorgeous and really suits you

Makes you look a lot younger too!

FoodieMum3 · 24/05/2015 18:40

eliza your hair is much, much nicer shorter. It's just so stylish and better looking, much thicker and healthier looking also.

My hair is below my shoulders. I'm bridesmaid next month and bride wants us to have up styles so I've left it grow but as soon as the wedding is over I am getting a stylish cut, jaw length or a little longer.

ilooklikemrsploppy · 24/05/2015 20:04

I've had my hair short for about 19yrs now. Can't imagine growing it again, gives me more time to do my make up ! Some people look great with long hair but I have quite small features and I just kind of disappear underneath it.

Atenco · 24/05/2015 20:30

It depends on your face, I think. I look horrible with short hair but I know loads of people who look great.

vitaminC · 25/05/2015 09:08

My hair is very fine and poker-straight and looks terrible long.
I did grow it out a few years ago, when I left my job to retrain, because I needed to save money, and as a student didn't need to look as groomed as when I was working.

I finally chopped it all off at the start of this year, when I started my current job and I love it. I finally feel like me again Smile

It's in a short crop, similar to this.
When I go out, I stick a load of mousse in it and blow dry it back, like in the second pic.

Is long hair more attractive and youthful, in your opinion? What length is your hair? How attractive do you feel?

I think short hair can be nice. Long hair can be too. 1) I think most people do not style their hair so whatever length it is it tends to just look washed and air dried. 2) and because of this I think short hair can too often look utilitarian. Whatever style I think it always looks better if it's styled.

TheHappinessTrap · 25/05/2015 09:53

Ps, I didn't answer your original q. I'm not am attractive woman. When i've tried short hairstyles I've felt less attractive. My hair does "long" well and I get compliments, so that makes me feel more attractive. But that's my hair. Yours might suit shorter styles and gain you compliments that way!

Goatlington · 25/05/2015 10:35

I am 47 and have long, straight highlighted hair. I adore my hair, takes years off me ( helps that I'm tall and slim) and is in lovely condition as I wash it only weekly.

I actually have a recurring nightmare that I chop my hair off!!
