Jicky ...giving it a second chance .. Love or hate ?

Itsalldramarama · 16/05/2015 11:10

Whilst impatiently waiting for my decants of Malles portrait of a lady and chanel 28 la pausA I have found a decany of Jicky I bought ages ago ! At the time I was so disappointed and couldn't get past the barn yard opening notes ! Other reviews say a lemon / lavender opening but I didn't get that and had to wash it off ! So having a lazy morning I decided to revisit it ..
At the moment it's so complex and keeps changing but I think I like it .. Not one to wear to work but more a guilty pleasure ! Might have to retry misouko .. That made me feel really nauseous initially .. Like a mix of vomit and dirty nappies ., but I really want to love it !!

thank you Canny, sent her those 2 and off to Fragrantica

DrankSangriaInThePark · 20/05/2015 12:56

Canny, my friend has bought the La Chasse aux Papillon, I'll let you know what she thinks.

My Nose samples have arrived, will eat lunch before opening them as I don't want my pasta to be quite that fragranced, or my wrist to smell of eau de Pesto. Grin

TheGruffal0 · 20/05/2015 13:37

Can anyone suggest a perfume (or body lotion) please, similar to the scent of Shu Uemura Shushu hair products? It is just amazing...

canny1234 · 22/05/2015 20:45

Dranksangria I hope your friend likes it!
Its always a bit risky buying full bottles in case you dislike an expensive perfume.Qvc do minis of L'artisan perfumes if you want to try first. Many perfume companies do sample sets on their websites or you can contact the company and they will send you specific samples.EBay are a good source for samples as is Amazon at times.I buy SPL!its and small decants on Fragantica as well.
Another white flower perfume I've just discovered is Jo Loves White Rose and Lemon leaves - an initial hit of Sherbert Lemon sweets morphs into a beautiful white Rose. Its really difficult to find a scent with White Rose and this is so dainty and pretty.Minimal silage and around 4 hours longevity for this perfume.

My samples have come! I'm wearing MMM Untitled L'Eau and it's yummy Smile

DrankSangriaInThePark · 22/05/2015 21:00

Mine too fortunately!
I have been wearing the MMM Untitled since Wednesday...at first I found it really confusing, can't really explain why...musky, bosky, powdery, sweet...it kind of reminded me of a modern Anais Anais! Then something happened, and I just love it! (dd likes it too!) Wish it lasted longer though.
Then I tried Costume National...well bleaarrrrgh, it is VILE! Smells like a 5 yr old has mixed a bottle of Eden, Tresor and J'Adore all together. It is so teenagery and sweet. Almost immediately I could feel a headache starting so just went and scrubbed it all off. (then as I could still smell it inside my nostrils I smothered myself in Byblos Cielo to get rid of the sickly sweet once and for all Grin )

fortunately · 22/05/2015 21:06

Oh you got a better traction than me, my 2 yr old wrinkled her nose and made eurgh sounds!

I can't stop smelling my wrists - they're like a fresh spring morning!

Did you get extras in your sample pack? I got 2 or 3 extra scents

fortunately · 22/05/2015 21:07

reaction

DrankSangriaInThePark · 22/05/2015 21:13

Yes, 2 extras, another MMM one Lazy Sunday Morning, and one called Cuir de Cordoba which from sniffing the bottle is worryingly doing the poo/tomcat thing.....Shock

CointreauVersial · 22/05/2015 22:47

I've been sorting out my vast collection of bottles and samples (mainly the latter) having bought some organiser boxes from Muji. Very therapeutic!

I've unearthed all sorts, including an unopened bottle of Valentino Rock n Rose Couture (probably came from DH's work). I'm in two kinds whether to keep it or flog it on eBay; I've no idea what it smells like, but the description on Fragrantica sounds interesting. But if I open it up and try it I won't get as much for the bottle if I sell it. Dilemma....

20% discount at the perfume court this weekend :)

Loved reading this thread :)

I'm kind of sold on the idea of deeply complex fragrances which you need to educate your nose on, except for one problem.

Can I ask slightly awkwardly, don't you worry that if you're wearing perfumes that initially smell of poo, or tomcat or other revolting smells, that, well, that other people will think you smell revolting too ?!

I want to smell intriguing and alluring... Not of actual poo!

Itsalldramarama · 23/05/2015 09:11

I wear perfume for me not others people :) if they don't like it it's their problem ! I like to smell it on me and don't wear lots that has high silage I like close to the skin perfumes that you can only smell close up , as for the' poo' smells it's only till they dry down really! Then they are Devine :) it does take a few wears to appreciate but one you 'get' it there's no going back :)

My SOTD is Penhaligon's Lily of the Valley

I'm thinking of ordering the Penhaligon's Scent Library - £16 for a selection of 1.5ml but it's mixed ladies and gents scents. Has anyone tried it?

canny1234 · 23/05/2015 09:44

Thats a really good question Miscellaneous.

I'm not sure I'm ever going to love most modern classics even though I've been wearing perfume for years( am just over 50).Even in my early twenties I disliked most perfumes ( apart from Byzance and Ysatis).I remember adoring Calyx as it was so different at the time, and Annick Goutal's creations .

Francis Kurkdjian has an interesting take on Classic perfumes. He reckons most perfumes derive from a particular moment in time. This doesn't always translate well to the future. He's fairly outspoken about his views on 'perfumistas' .I find him honest and entertaining but he's not always approved of.

Incidentally I have a vintage bottle of Byzance that I love sniffing but sprayed on smells vintage and a little dated - I loved it at the time!
ZeroFunDame · 23/05/2015 10:10

Haven't seen the Scent Library but, early 90s I was obsessed with Penhaglions. They happened to have glorious shops in both the place I lived and all over London where I worked.

Was there something with orange blossom? Ridiculously pretty and intense. And Jubilee Bouquet - a wonderful, wonderful thing, which I fell out of love with when they changed the name to something more "modern".

Miscellaneous it's an interesting question. I've found over the years that a perfume that, on first opening, seems almost horrifying, or challenging, or nothing like anything I've experienced before, very often becomes something I adore. After an initial resistance, because I'm detecting discrete notes, some of which are unattractive, my nose eventually manages to combine the notes into some complex and lovely harmony.

Two things that will influence one's relationship with a perfume are inherent skin chemistry - which evolves over time, and immediate mood.

So, for me, I've found my way to niche stuff probably partly because my skin turns a lot of mainstream things to vinegar. It's annoying; my DM for instantance must be a perfumier's dream client - everything reaches its flull potential on her wrist.

And it took me a while to understand about mood. The first couple of times I tried Dans Tes Bras I was stressed and anxious about non perfume issues. It smelled vile on me; all rotting mushroom and despair. A few weeks later I thought I'd give it one last try before throwing the sample away. But I was in a different mood - relaxed, at home, not expecting anything. And then it was suddenly, absolutely mine - to the extent that it revealed to me parts of my ... hmm psyche seems the right word, that I had never met before. Violets and silk and some lovely reference to the mont blanc ink for my fountain pen. And it feels so intimate it's never a scent I would want to wear away from home or in going out clothes ..

SOTD yesterday was at least a third of my SÃ¥danne sample; opens like Lipstick Rose drenched in alcohol, at which point I wanted 20 bottles, but it's a bit demanding - it stands away from me; unlike Pear & Olive whIch just wants to blend in.

MsBojangles · 23/05/2015 11:54

I caved and ordered a sample of Jicky, no idea why as I loathe lavender and poo but I'm so intrigued it just had to be done.

Trying out Centrepiece by 4160 Tuesdays, it's very different to their other stuff, quite heavy spicy and expensive, rather masculine. I like it but think I'll love it in winter.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 23/05/2015 12:39

Canny and Zero, that's really interesting, thank you both for taking the time to explain to fascinated novices like me. Grin
I get the 'time' thing totally. I feel most 'me' in 80s perfumes maybe because the 80s was when I was most vitally me if that makes any sense.
I try all sorts of new stuff, but the ones that grab me all seem to have that 80s strong but never flowery, womanly but never girly thing going on.

I tried Penhaligon's hyperborea this morning, from my Nose samples. Another very sweet sherbetty air freshener teenage bath foam scent unfortunately. Sad

ZeroFunDame · 23/05/2015 12:49

It's a pleasure!

I'm guessing both Jicky and the Penhaglions scents would all be unrecognisable to me now. Between the need to economise and vague global restrictions on certain ingredients I'm sure Jicky has suffered. And didn't Penhaglions change ownership? I may be wrong. I know that on my now rare visits into perfume blog land there's often reference to some big name perfumier working with Penhaglions - so it seems to have gone up in the world again, after a period of lost-in-tweedom.

fortunately · 23/05/2015 20:01

I've ordered my Penhaligons samples Smile

Sangria I came across Ellenisia on the Penhaligons website which sounds absolutely amazing and is white flowers - I thought of your friend who was looking for white flower scents?

I'm wearing Maison Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis. I think this might be my go-to perfume for evenings. I've loved all my nose recommendations so far!

MiscellaneousAssortment · 24/05/2015 00:32

I've done my diagnosis thingy... Has anyone smelt any of these before? Any clues what they're like? I'm not sure my perfumes were a good representation of what I like anymore...

Jicky ...giving it a second chance .. Love or hate ?
Jicky ...giving it a second chance .. Love or hate ?
MsBojangles · 24/05/2015 13:13

Trying out L'heure Bleu for the first time today, it's a vintage sample. Took me two whole hours to not hate it! Now it's settled it's very...French, too powdery and not really my cup of tea but at least the loathing has passed.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/05/2015 14:00

fortunately- I'll pass that onto her, thanks!

Miscellaneous, I can't see any actual perfumes on there? Just the characteristics?

I have almost thrown up at the 2 Penhaligans I was sent, Iperborea and Peoneve. Peoneve smells like rotting vegetation. Iperborea is another teenager (think Body Shop circa 1980) sweet air freshener cheap candle type of perfume. Not impressed at all.

Today I am trying Cuir de Cordoba which is more like it, powdery and heavy and somehow Christmassy. There must be some vanilla in there somewhere. Only have the tiniest bit on, it is strong. Not sure I could handle wearing it completely, rather than trying it out though.

I have no idea where the diagnostic came up with these for me from, maybe as someone said, they are a bit cheeky and just send you what they are promoting at any time. I probably won't bother again.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/05/2015 14:01

Oh how odd, now I can see them!

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/05/2015 14:05

Can't read the names though!
