Love my Botox at 40!

New to Mumsnet- had my birthday a month ago, turned 40, so took the plunge for a bit of botox, to smooth out my crow's feets and forehead lines.

LOVE it! Very smooth face now, hope it lasts another 2-3 months.p
I would recommend it, definitely, although I think people should wait till late 30s not get it too young

Emma I look at Amanda Holden and I think she is a very attractive lady but her face doesn't wrinkle at all. I would want botox to look natural not look like I've been botoxed if you know what I mean. Glad you've had such good results with yours.

emmarowlands · 02/05/2015 19:26

Mine is nowhere near as hers- I've gone on the light side, just softening and smoothing,

It's not for everyone I know that, and I fully get the do you or don't you arguments

That's good Emma :) I think 11s don't look as 'grumpy' as a 1 ! Hate mine ! Like a cleft ! Think it's from all the years of squinting to see without specs on ;)

emmarowlands · 02/05/2015 20:30

Go for it Itsalldramarama!

What is the point of having it done though if no one notices?

Itsalldramarama · 02/05/2015 20:41

Might have to save up loved it when I could afford it
! If no one notices that means it's a good 'natural but better ' effect !! We do it for ourselves not for others ! Nothing like feeling confident and good in your skin , pardon the pun ;)

Fabulassie · 02/05/2015 20:51

It's not that nobody notices - it's that they can't put their finger on what's different. You just look better.

Mydearchild · 02/05/2015 21:18

I wouldn't hesitate in getting it done to be honest - the one thing that puts me off really is the financial up keep of it. Yet again if it makes you feel better about yourself I bet it's worth it.

emmarowlands · 02/05/2015 21:41

I had mine done by my dentist- I wouldn't go to anyone except a nurse/Dr/dentist

Enjoy it while it looks good as it doesn't after a few years I loved it but have seen a few friends who have always looked great and natural but now it has given them a really heavy masculine look. ive stopped it now and tbh don't look hugely different

Kennington · 03/05/2015 08:12

Hi what about the bottom half of face.. I think it looks great on forehead but the difference between the top and the jowels and bottom half can be incongruous- any tips?

paxtecum · 03/05/2015 08:18

Botox can have massive adverse health effects, which isn't surprising as it is derived from a deadly poison.
Maybe have a look at this support group:

And then decide if it is worth the risk.

Aridane · 03/05/2015 09:05

Kennington - it's the slippery slope - fillers for the bottom half... Blush

Itsalldramarama · 03/05/2015 09:30

Kenington that's my point too ! That's why a subtle approach leaving a few lines round the eyes balances it out and looks less 'done' but still fresh

Fabulassie · 03/05/2015 09:50

I followed the link and didn't understand it. I am capable of basic reading comprehension and have a not-horrible grasp of scientific stuff but that was so far over my head as to be useless.

However, the site it is on ... well, I don't know. I went and looked at some of the forum posts and people were reporting all sorts of various issues from tooth soreness to general malaise. One post had a woman complaining of face pain that may or may not be a sinus infection. She said that the problem started when she had botox and fillers. Was it the botox? The fillers (she didn't say which fillers she got)? Both? Neither?

I used to have a serious chronic illness (viral and not one that is mysterious at all) and sought support online where I encountered a great deal of crazy.

I'm sure there have been health problems caused by botox. But it was used for medical reasons for decades before being approved for cosmetic use.

noddyholder · 03/05/2015 10:09

You need a good defined jaw to keep having the top half done without addressing the lower. Also I noticed after a while the forehead looks kind of big and masculine and it seems to stay even if you stop the Botox. If you have a family predisposition to jowls I would avoid Botox unless you are going to do it all

MrsGuyGarvey · 03/05/2015 10:13

Dragoncanhop I paid £99 in Manchester.

Fabulassie · 03/05/2015 10:20

MrsGuyGarvey I'm in Manchester, too. I have always used Destination Skin at House of Fraser and haven't done any real comparison shopping. Where did you go?

paxtecum · 03/05/2015 12:29

www.realself.com/forum/anxiety-depression-brain-fog-dizziness-botox

Try this link then.

Google 'Botox anxiety'.

I don't wish ill on anyone, but injecting you body with a poison isn't the brightest idea. It is naive not to expect some side effects.

MrsGuyGarvey · 03/05/2015 13:30

Fabulassie I went to Dermaskin in Spinningfields, have been before a couple of years ago and very happy with them.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/05/2015 13:37

I might be a bit judgey here as I don't need botox. but the women I do know who've had it done look bloody awful… or fresh at first but then it wears off…

but you can tell the 'frozen' look. one of them has the veneers etc and it's not long before she wants other procedures she tells me.

I also think we don't know long term risks yet as paxtecum says...

SuperFlyHigh · 03/05/2015 13:38

I do however think that facials, good skincare, avoiding sun etc are good mantras.

the woman I mentioned above smokes in secret and was then concerned about the 'smokers lines' near her mouth…. she used spf50 every day and the best skincare and diet but ignored the smoking warnings.

SuperFlyHigh · 03/05/2015 13:42

LadyPenny don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but compliments are better than silence…

Some things do work like staying out of the sun, retinoids etc…

surgery if you must do it is usually very expensive and niche. I wouldn't personally touch most of those doctors who do botox to anyone and everyone and I count Harley Street surgeons among them.

I also know (through my mum's foreign student) a Swiss PS.

furrymuff · 03/05/2015 13:48

I've had it done a couple of times, and while I love how it looks, I did have some adverse side effects the last time. I went to a different practitioner the second time and don't know whether that made a difference.

Within a day of having it done I developed a burning pain in my sinuses, all around my eye socket and across my cheek bone, along with a tension type headache that felt like someone was tightening a band around my head. While I expected a slight headache for a couple of days, this headache and the burning sensation persisted for roughly five weeks.

On googling it I could see that it was a fairly common complaint - I don't know whether it was the expertise of the practitioner or whether I was just unlucky, but it has certainly put me off having it again Sad
