Question.

Do we really need SPF in this country when you are not out under the direct sun?

Fabulassie · 03/05/2015 16:58

I'm not sure, queensansastark - I think it's best to use something, at least during the summer when the sunlight we do encounter is much stronger. But, then, I have had a carcinoma removed from my face and I've never been a sun worshipper. (I did grow up in the US, however, and never bothered with sunscreen much.)

I wear Cityblock 25 spf, as I think that is plenty sufficient. I am using both Retin A and a vitamin C serum so it's important that I do. If you use Retin A, retinoids, or an AHA product, you should use sunscreen.

If I am going to do anything actually outdoorsy, then I will wear an SPF 50 sunscreen that I have. It's not as good under makeup so I don't normally care to wear it but I will if I am going hill walking or something like that.

Just that most of the SPF I've used are so sticky and more like a sun cream than a light day cream with SPF iykwim. I just don't like the feel of it. I've tried LRP anthelios tinted SPF 50 cream and ego sun sense daily face 50+.

That's a good point, if you use retinal a and fly colic products you need SPF because of that rather than the (lack of) British sun.

I actually live bang on the equator, and I just wear a sun hat unless I know I'll be outside most of the day, then I'd smear SPF 50 on plus hat.

Dd is extremely sun sensitive and I put LRP SPF 50 children s sun lotion on her face EVERYDAY and she hates it, so much so that she looks forward to coming back to the uk so that she doesn't have to wear suncream. She is even resistant to the idea that when she is a teenager she ll need to wear day moisturiser with SPF everyday.....

Fabulassie · 03/05/2015 17:18

Perhaps try a lower SPF?

I went to get another Clinique City Block and tried their spf 40 on the back of my hand. It didn't feel quite as nice and the lady agreed that it's not as good under makeup. But for everyday, ordinary use, I don't think you need to have that high an SPF.

What I do care about is it being full spectrum (both UVA/UVB). Most sunscreens only block out the rays that cause sunburn. But sun damage/cancer-causing rays aren't blocked out. I won't waste my time on anything that isn't full spectrum.

LexLoofah · 03/05/2015 17:19

queen we are Ina hot sunny climate too and the DCs and I wear SPF every day. I don't want my melasma getting worse and we spend a lot of time outside, wearing hats when we can but of course don't wear hats in the pool so need extra protection.

They wear the JASON brand if you can get it, goes on really well, not greasy and smells nice. I like the Nutrogena dry touch ultra sheer, mine is SPF 100

Ironically they got a bit burned one day in the UK last summer when I did not apply SPF as thought it was not v sunny

queensansastark · 03/05/2015 17:26

I think in England you can get complacent about the sun risks and can get caught out unprepared.

So complicated with serums, moisturiser, bb/cc cream, SPF/ suncream and foundation....Confused

the clinique cityblock 25 is a mineral sunscreen and 40 is a chemical one if that helps anyone.

I have both and they're both quite nice like a bb cream

TopEndChops · 03/05/2015 20:33

Can someone help please, have been looking at PC 2%BHA and also the Resist 5 and 10% daily/weekly AHA treatments. I am 48, crepey eyes and a little crepey on the cheeks, I have lines and deep lines on my forehead and some redness around my nose and chin, but generally don't get spots or blackheads, would say skin is normal to dry. Which would be the most beneficial? Do I need all of them?

Currently do the double cleanse, acid tone, serum with retinol (PC), moisturiser, SPF.

Am well confused.

Kundry · 03/05/2015 20:43

If you don't get blackheads I'd go with the AHA. CH likes mixing up acids and using a bit of everything, Paula suggests you just use one.

CoconutAmericano · 03/05/2015 20:49

Yes go with an AHA. BHA's are typically for acne prone clogged porey skin. Mine basically Sad

Itsalldramarama · 03/05/2015 21:04

Browsing amazon .. Again .. Skin care is my new obsession .. Anyone tried the retinol or vit c serum ? Seems to have good reviews ?

CoconutAmericano · 03/05/2015 21:20

Ive a Timeless vitamin C serum on order at the mo itsalldtama from the us. The shipping fee was surprisingly cheap.

CoconutAmericano · 03/05/2015 21:23

Ladies using Tretinoin, Angie from Hot and Flashy says you cant use salicylic acid when you're using tretinoin. I did last week, well a couple of days later and I think that's why my skin reacted so badly. So is anyone else using a bha as well as tretinoin in their routine? Im going to avoid it and just use an aha maybe twice a week. Im so scared of another bad reaction!!

Baalamooree · 03/05/2015 21:28

Coconut I wondered about the using BHAs but I just didn't use any on the day I used the Retin A. Does anyone else know if it can be used?

Please let us know how you get on with the Timeless Vit C. I really want to order, the only thing that is stopping me is the customs fee.

CoconutAmericano · 03/05/2015 21:33

Omg don't remember being asked about a customs fee Shock. i'll defo report back. Really looking forward to trying it out.

Itsalldramarama · 03/05/2015 21:35

Oops .. Meant to say from oz naturals !!!!

TopEndChops · 03/05/2015 21:44

I use BHA and AHA in the morning and retin at night.

I had a bit of soreness today but I just cleansed my face and it has gone away.

From what I have read you can use both just one in the morning and one at night but it is recommended that you get used to the retin a first.

I just used both straight away. No redness or flaking, just a bit of short lasting soreness this morning when I put on my SPF.

If you aren't reacting badly to the retin a I don't see why you can't use BHA/AHA in the mornings but the experts here may have a different opinion.

TopEndChops · 03/05/2015 21:54

Have only just realized AHA/BHA is salicylic acid/glycolic acid.
I am so slow sometimes Blush

I am however getting less confused
