What Exactly are Girlfriend Jeans?

I keep reading (as in the Times the other day) that girlfriend jeans are what we all 'should' be wearing.

Can anyone spell out for me the essential basic features of girlfriend jeans, please, so I can think whether they'd suit me? I've been wearing NYDJ skinnies faithfully for quite a few years now and like them, but am wondering if I should try something different. (Apart from flares, which I do know about).

Opinions also welcome on whether they'd be likely to suit a tall and large hourglass, with long and quite slim legs. Am worried they might be baggy, detracting from the appearance of my only vaguely slender features.

Marie Claire explanation of girlfriend jeans. In a nutshell -

‘It’s a more classic fit – tighter and higher on the hip, with a tapered slim straight leg. Made from more ridged denim, the style is more authentic and offers a flattering shape.”

I presume they mean rigid denim not ridged denim!

OP, boyfriend jeans are quite baggy, loose. Girlfriend are more fitted, but still relaxed.
I have a pair from [[http://www.gap.co.uk/browse/search.do?searchText=girlfriend Gap]] wear them all the time, turned up as in the picture, with Supergas.
They are so comfy!!

I have gap girlfriend jeans. They are similar in shape to boyfriend jeans except there are slimmer and they don't have the delightful 'crotch half way to your knees' effect that you often get with boyfriend jeans

Thanks. Sounds quite good so far ( though wonder how they can be ' more authentic' as Elle says!).
Are they usually worn ankle length/ rolled up?
How do they compare to straight leg jeans, which I find a bit boring and baggy on me?

Any other comments on my latest two questions, please?

Yes to ankle/rolled up, the Gap ones are nicely tapered making them a bit neater than boyfriend/straight styles. They are also lovely soft, comfy denim.

Planning on getting some of these when I can get to gap to try on.

I have slim legs and a small bum - in huge contrast to my top half which is quite plump - and the gap girlfriend jeans were so tight on me it was unbelievable. I couldn't tell the difference between them and the skinnies. The boyfriend ones on the other hand were mahaoosive and fell off me and made me look huge and saggy crotched!

Shame as I buy lots of jeans/trousers in gap and normally have no issues with their sizing.

I had high hopes for the girlfriend jeans tooHmm

Anyone had any experience of girlfriend jeans which aren't the Gap ones?

Btw like the sound of tapered and rolled up .

I don't have girlfriend jeans, but they sound quite similar to "mom" jeans which are a tapered peg leg and a high waist. I love the Topshop ones with tucked in tops and rolled up with bare ankles and brogues, Supergas etc, or just sitting at the top of Chelsea boots.
