Just wondering what the main 'staple' products you use are for daily work/home life??

Mine are:
Nivea soft moisturiser
Dior star foundation put on with the backstage blender
Benefit big beautiful eye shadow 1 & 2 (no liner shadow)
Max factor masterpiece in black
Benefit hoola bronzer
Benefit watts up highlighter
M and s raspberry lip butter

Looks quite a lot Blush I'm only in NHS (mental health)..... Not a make up counter! Grin

I always wear make up. After many comments from my mother and 'friends' (so called) I actually feel unable to leave the house without it. You must all be rich with your Mac/Nars/Bobbie Brown stuff though!! Nothing over £5 on my list!

On a normal day
Moisturiser
Collection concealer (Collection is great for pale skin)
Rimmel Hazel eyebrow pencil
Collection translucent powder
MUA winter shades eyeshadow (beige/gold)
Essence gold/bronze eyeliner under lower lashes
Eyelash curlers
NYC 'Cityproof' mascara (black)
Miss Sporty ' Lash Millionaire' mascara (black)
MAybelline dream blush mousse (pale pink)
Vaseline on lips

If I fancy it/going out, I'll add in black eyeliner on top lids

I look horrendous without make up, but people have commented that it looks natural (even though it sounds a lot!)

ILoveYouBaby · 17/04/2015 21:53

some days I wear no make up and that's fine by me, usually when I'm not going anywhere!

My work 'face' is:

smashbox primer
under eye concealer
Laura mercier tinted moisturiser
benefit heaven blusher
benefit bronzer
benefit dandelion
porefessional
maybelline mascara
lip balm.

I never look 'made up'. I'm naturally very pale with dull and uneven skin, big dark under eye circles and dry lips. Make up helps me feel good. I feel fine without it, but It's nice to make an effort and know that I look half decent.

applecatchers36 · 17/04/2015 22:09

Everyday products

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser
Estée Lauder Double wear smudge free mascara
Benefit hoola blusher
Sleek under eye concealer

On nights out etc

Nars eye shadow
bourjois eye pencil

eeneido the dior star foundation is brilliant, although no idea if they do darker shades sorry (I assume so?!) mine is one shade warmer than ivory, so we're probably at different ends of the spectrum Grin

It lasts for ages and blends really well. The finish is quite dewy, but also matte which sounds oxymoronic but is true! It adds sheen without shine and covers without cakiness. You can build the finish really easily (eg I use more over problem Areas such as my chin and less everywhere else) but blends seamlessly through the layers.

It's pricy- it's dior! But best £34 I've spent. The backstage blender is like a beauty blender but dry, and it is amazing. Really spreads out the product and blends well. I don't use it with a primer, and it stays on 10+ hours without reapplication. Great stuff!

And as for why I wear makeup..... Because I can?

TheImprobableGirl · 17/04/2015 22:46

Sorry that was to eminado and vintagebeads it is good on my dry skin~though I do use moisturiser first (as long as I can before hand) it doesn't make dry areas worse as far as I can tell :)

Life's tough enough, I take my little pleasures where I can.

Amen! That's why I wear make-up.

Eminado try Isadora in Cocoa from Ebay or Amazon for about £8.

damepeanutbutter I am in my mid sixties and have very good skin , for my age. I agree it's genetic-my mother still had lovely skin when she died, in her eighties, and so do my daughters . But I have also worn foundation since my mid twenties, for work/going out . I don't bother 'round the house' . I have very fair, freckly skin and it evens it out . Now I'm not in the first flush, it also helps put a bit of glow back in .
I wear
serum (currently Boot, Clarins Double wear when flush)
Moisturiser(Clarins Multi Active Day Cream )
and primer , Garnier Perfect Blur under my nose to 'blur ' lines, Clarins Instant Light on my cheeks to add glow .
Foundation is MaxFactor Whipped Creme (Light Ivory) but again I buy Clarins Super Restorative when feeling rich! Might try the Dior Star lots of people have mentioned . In summer I wear tinted moisturiser (only). I think its Nvea biut I can't be bothered to go and look . Some of this stuff has Sun Protection, which I think is good for my skin too .
Similarly I wear blusher - Maybelline Dream Mousse Peach Satin I am so wedded to this shade I have stockpiled it, as they stopped doing it once . It was traumatic .I look much healthier with it (I regularly go walking with a friend-sans make up as I get sweaty. She always asks me if I'm OK as i'm 'so pale' .I have to remind her she usually sees me wearing slap).
I wear eyeliner- , Extreme 24 hr felt tip (discovered through MN) V cheap .
dark brown mascara , MaxFactor Masterpiece.
and define my greying brows with Body Shop powder, Brow and Liner Kit. (lasts for ever)
For a party/dressed up function I might add some eyeshadow - have small selection in purple, green, grey but tend not to wear in daytime any more.
I rarely wear lipstick Sometimes pale pink gloss .

It takes me 10 mins, max, to apply . I could do it in 5 if I tried .

I always wear perfume- SJP Lovely for every day . Opium, Black Opium, Dolce Vita, Mitsouko, Penhalgion Bluebells (summer) for going out .

It may sound vain, (if it is I don't care - this is anonymous) but most people think (and friends say I look) I am at least ten years younger than I am ( group of DD2s student friends were recently discussing their parents. Age came up and she says the ones who had met me couldn't believe I was 'that old' .I had my Dcs later in life !). I also still have my hair coloured .Believe me , if I 'overdid it' or looked like mutton dressed up as lamb, the DDs would tell me .

The psychology is interesting . I think when I worked, putting my professional 'face' on made me feel more confident and polished-it went with the expensive suits and the high heels . It carried over into private life. I do find my friends who don't (or rarely) wear make up tend not to have worked in a business environment . They also, being mostly in their fifties or older ,often look tired and washed out .

I don't look terrible without make up .I just look younger/ fresher/ better looking with it .

I once had a (gorgeous , you would think needed no enhancement) work colleague who said (in front of our male boss) that she'd have to call in sick if she couldn't find her mascara of a morning . Boss and male colleagues looked bemused . Women just smiled and nodded understanding .

frankietwospots · 17/04/2015 23:25

Why do I wear make up? I've loved it since I was a little girl and see it as a way of being creative and experimental. When I was younger and a goth, I loved the way I could play with my appearance by using make up. It's totally the creative thing for me.

ScooseIsLoose · 18/04/2015 00:24

I love expensive makeup products they are luxurious my makeup collection is worth a fortune. I don't wear make up to impress anyone but myself. To me applying my makeup makes me feel and look better in what's otherwise a crap situation it cheers me up

coffeenut · 18/04/2015 02:39

absolutely agree frankie - it's a creative outlet for me (with the bonus of making me look better!)

I need to get some of this Dior Star foundation.

My everyday staples:

Bioderma moisturiser
Revlon colorstay in oily/combo
Clinique blush in innocent peach
NARS laguna bronzer (in summer)
Diorshow iconic overcurl mascara
Heavy duty lipbalm

BrandyAlexander · 18/04/2015 07:30

Very interesting see all the different products on this thread.

Today (weekend) I will wear:

Liz Earle Moisturiser
Mac tinted moisturiser
Marc Jacobs eyeliner
Mac tinted lip balm.

If it's a work day then I use a lot of primers to make my make up last the whole day and not slip:

Liz Earle Moisturiser
Nars Primer
Nars Matt foundation
Mac Prep & Prime for eyes before applying Mac eye shadows (2 - a lighter all over and darker in crease)
Mac prep & prime for eye lashes before applying mascara (the primer is so good that I am not too fussy about which mascara)
Mac prep & prime for lips before applying lipstick (current favourite Nars Satin lip pencil)

TheImprobableGirl · 18/04/2015 08:36

Have seen a lot of primers mentioned but don't recall seeing the smash box photo ready? Or indeed a smash box palette.... They have just opened a bit smashbox counter in boots and was going to try a couple of things on payday.

I love how everyone's still using a bit of may maybelline great lash (pink tube) that's always been a go to favourite of mine!

OP posts:
ScarlettDarling · 18/04/2015 08:57

I've never used a primer, not really sure what they do?!
Do you use it under foundation or instead of?

TheImprobableGirl · 18/04/2015 09:29

It's meant to even out your skin before the foundation goes on and make th foundation stay on longer.

Some brighten, some smooth, some clear pores

OP posts:
findingmyfeet12 · 18/04/2015 10:38

I wear makeup because I think it makes me look better - do I need another reason?

I wear:
Vichy aqualia thermal serum and moisturiser
Either Lush colour supplement or YSL youth liberator foundation
YSL pressed powder
Benefit erase paste
Maybelline the rocket volume mascara
MUA brown eyeshadow brushed into my eyebrows
Maybelline cream blush or Sleek blush in rose gold (dupe for Nars O)
Lipstick or lipgloss could be any of a large selection

Aside from the above, I wouldn't go into a meeting or professional environment completely makeup free. I don't think (at my age) that it looks professional to do so. I'm sure plenty will disagree on that point.

Postchildrenpregranny · 18/04/2015 10:58

Theimproable girl
Having experimented with make up for 50 years I have finally settled on brands/colours which 'suit' . Definitely think it's worth spending money on skincare and foundation . ( I do think they've 'protected' my inherently good skin) .For the rest, cheapish stuff is just as good if not beter-viz the Maybelline and Maz Factor mascaras that come up again and again. My cheap-£3 I think -eyeliner is better than the Body Shop one I used before, which is OK.DD2 left a expensive Benefit one in our bathroom I sneaked a try and couldnt get on with it. Ditto their mascara
The Dior Star foundation is caling to me ...Will try and get sample !

HelenF350 · 18/04/2015 11:11

I don't wear any make up at all unless I'm going out for dinner or to a function. I do tint my eyelashes though. If I'm going out I use maybelline BB cream, max factor masterpiece max mascara, front cover black eyeliner, front cover eyeshadow and Clinique lip gloss. Hardly anything. I didn't think this was strange but I'm a bit concerned now. Should I be wearing make up every day?

findingmyfeet12 · 18/04/2015 11:20

Its all personal choice ultimately. Being without makeup at work is not an option for me because I don't think I would look professional without it. That's a personal opinion though - each to their own.

Each of the items I wear has a specific purpose and I can't see a way for me to reduce my daily routine.

I try not to wear any makeup at the weekend though to let my skin breathe a bit.

BrandyAlexander · 18/04/2015 11:21

Definitely not Helen if you don't think you need it! It's only in my 40s that I started wearing make up daily because I think it enhances what I already have but you don't have to! I also try and have a make up free day to allow my skin to breathe.

Primers....I discovered these when my make up artist used them for my wedding. magic stuff that makes make up last longer and not slip off or make your face go all shiny. It also makes the foundation look smoother. and acts as a second barrier between the rest of your make up and your skin.

Postchildrenpregranny · 18/04/2015 11:21

I don't wear make up round the house or just going to supermarket/newsagent etc . As the DH knows what I look like without it I can't be bothered !(I wear waterproofmascara -only- when I go fairly serious walking ) I don't wear foundation when it's very hot, but would probably use tinted moisturiser in the evening. But if going to a meeting/ social event,/seeing friends ,even in the daytime, yes I wear it . And if I'd gone to work without it staff would have thought I was ill !
But no one on here is saying everyone should. To each their own

gaggiagirl · 18/04/2015 11:29

I adore make up. Its a hobby, a joy, it brightens my day. I enjoy working out what products to use to complete a look. Love it.
A typical day for me would be...
Green,lilac and yellow correctors
Bourjois CC foundation
Mac studio fix concealer
Nyx powder
No7 blush
Mac highlighter
Benefit bronzer
Rimmel eyebrow pencil
Smashbox black gel eyeliner
Loreal manga mascara
Topshop lippy
Carmex lip balm

That's on work days where I just need to look human. Dont get me started on weekend looks! Grin

pinkfrocks · 18/04/2015 14:13

I think most people as they get older need a bit of help.
I am very pale - transparent skin- and have inherited purple under eye shadows.
My skin is excellent- no lines in my late 50s- but with fair hair , fair eyebrows, fair lashes and fair skin I look like death with no make up. On the odd occasion I've opened the front door to people when not made up, they have asked if I am ill.

I'd love to be someone whose skin is slightly darker , or rosy, or whatever and doesn't need foundation but I've worn it since I was 15.

I don't use a darker foundation but I do use on that evens out my skin a bit, acts as a base for blusher and under eye coverage.

I wear make up all the time, even when in the house. A friend complimented me recently by asking if I was in fact wearing any make up at all, which just shows that if you use it carefully it doesn't look like slap!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 18/04/2015 14:27

Another one here with very pale skin and fair hair but not many wrinkles for my age (54).

I wear make up all the time - I always have and always made time for it even with tiny babies. Mostly I wear Boots No 7, foundation, blusher and lipstick as my "round the house makeup" with eyes done for work and going out.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 18/04/2015 14:40

Today I'm wearing:

My usual serum & some La Roche Posay Effaclar potion for spotty skin.
A fairly sheer mixture of Clarins Flash Balm (tester pot I'm trying out), Clarins moisturiser, & Maybelline True Match foundation in Ivory Rose.
A tiny dab of pale pink blusher.
Bourjois eyeshadow in a neutral shade.

TBH, I often go without. I just don't have time before work - it's that or get DD sorted for nursery. I do at least do the proper skincare regime though. Sometimes I have time for a quick sweep of powder foundation but that would be it. Has anyone ever dyed their eyelashes, is it a hassle, does it work, what brand did you use?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a paler, pink-toned foundation that's easily available, high st prices? The Maybelline is ok-ish now but in the depths of winter I look like I've been Tangoed... I have hazel eyes & hair a similar colour to Jennifer Aniston circa Friends. I'm as pale as a white person can get, without being Nordic blonde or Redheaded. And I don't have fabulous skin (slightly oily/sensitive) aaargh!

Oh and lip colour. Everything looks cheap on me/makes me look cheap. Any recommendations?

squizita · 18/04/2015 14:47

Nivea soft
Avon pressed mineral powder
A striped light to dark bronzer (rotate brands) I use the light to highlight, medium to bronze or eyeshadow, dark to fill eyebrows.
Maybe line mascara
Bourjois Le Clubbing liquid eye liner (lasts all day)
Rockalilly lipstick - hard to get hold of now! So on the hunt for alternatives...
