Had my first " your skin looks amazing" comment-- THANK YOU Caroline Hirons!

A colleague said this at work today, I was so chuffed.
I'm 47 and was looking not so good. This last month I have invested in serums, acids and what not have gone back to Caroline Hirons properly this time. I have been religiously cleaning and tending to my face AM and PM. I use a 30% glycol peel every couple of weeks and use tretinoin every 3 days.
I must say even I have noticed a difference, it has knocked years off me.
All blemishes gone, skin is ultra smooth, wrinkles reduced.
There is hope for us more (ahem) mature ladies!

www.pharmacygeoff-uk.

I use tretinoin 2 times a week at the mo. It makes me peel all over so i wait until the new skin is a bit tougher before i start again. Apparently the peeling will stop.
I don't use oil afterwards but I think you can if you want if your skin feels too dry.
I do an acid peel at the weekend but then again it depends where I am with my peeling face. I wouldn't want to put acid peel on baby fresh skin. I'm still very much finding my way with it all. I don't want to overwhelm my skin ( which I have done and then have to back off!)
Sunscreen is an absolute must though.

Yy to skin being different!
If I had to pick two products it would be the balmology cleansing balm (smells incredible) and pixi glow tonic

I am not loaded Grin
Am - lush 9-5 cleanser, organic surge orange flower toner, a £4 hyaluronic acid serum, and nip/fab instant radiance fix
PM - olay eye makeup remover (in a tube , it's a cream), clinique take the day off balm, pixi glow toner. Either nip fab again or I use REN omega 3 serum (this is lovely)

VeryStressedMum · 15/04/2015 16:38

I've just started hot cloth cleansing, I bought the super drug vit e one which is ok I suppose but u pick up the Emma Hardie moringa cleanser later which I bought on the advice of CH so it better be good!
I've read quite a bit about liquid gold. ..so I would cleanse then put liquid gold on and that's it?

hidingfromthem · 15/04/2015 16:39

OP - can you name product that has tretinoin in it that you use twice a week, pls?

also the link you gave is broken.

thanks.

VeryStressedMum · 15/04/2015 16:39

She also recommends hyaluronic (sp) has anyone used it?

bigbuttons · 15/04/2015 16:45

Dunno why the link won't work Confused
Just google pharmacy Geoff uk. I use the tretinoin gel at 0.1%. It is the strongest. Sensitive skins might want to start with something weaker. I once tried the cream and it did nothing for me. We are all different though. I think the usual advice is to start low and build up. Having said that you can buffer the gel with an oil or moisturiser.

bigbuttons · 15/04/2015 16:46

I make my own hyaluronic gel using the powder and water. Much cheaper and just as effective than anything you can buy.

MrsDevere you need to make sure it is an acid toner, not just an 'old fashioned' type iyswim?
CH says you need something that will exfoliate, so has an acid in it. Check what is on your clarins toner bottle.
At the moment I am using these am www.amazon.co.uk/Clearasil-Stay-Clear-Pads-65s/dp/B00D6BFI5W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429115850&sr=8-1&keywords=clearasil+pads got them in poundland!!!
and these pm [http://www.nipandfab.com/skincare/exfoliating-treatments/glycolic-fix-pads?gclid=Cj0KEQjwmLipBRC59O_EqJ_E0asBEiQATYdNhxg-FwBlfUVF1UCdsDzsTRN9cz7zXiBolIQxvZpb1ugaAlgD8P8HAQ]] they were 1/2 price in super drug.

hiding I think cleaning properly is the way to go for blackheads as a day to day tactic. The tretinoin will peel off a whole layer of skin, so is more aggressive.
Ch has an article about spots and what to do about them!

Gosh. Things have moved on since Jackie magazine told me to cleanse, tone and moisturise in 1985.

Why is an acid toner essential?

Are the Body Shop serums worth trying?

I'm mid-40s and my skin is generally clear, but definitely starting to sag and wrinkle.

Kundry · 15/04/2015 18:37

I quite like Caroline Hirons but at heart am more of a Dr Sam Bunting girl because she recommends cheaper products

However they both can be boiled down to:

am -
cleanse with bland non-foaming cleanser
acid tone
Serum or oil
moisturise with SPF

pm -
as above with double cleansing if you wear make-up and retinol

Caroline is product crazy so throws in extra steps but that is the core of the routine. I sometimes do that because it's fun but it also costs £££ and you can get 99% of the results by doing the above.

So my version is:
Cleanser - Cetaphil. I don't double cleanse except when I wear makeup which is rarely.
Acid tone - currently Clinique Mild Exfoliating Lotion. Frankly not liking it as much as Paula's Choice 2% BHA. Or 2% Salicylic Acid from SR Skincare which is my favourite cheap as chips option. Effaclar Duo was nice too.
Hydraluron - will not buy again, am suspicious that 'dehydrated skin' is a myth
Serum - usually Paula's Choice again, I want my serum to have peptides and anti-oxidants in it
Moisturiser - am I just use SPF, like Heliocare gel, pm Cerave for the ceramides and niacinamide.

Am then in the evening I use Retin-A stopped over the winter because my bathroom is too cold to stand fussing in-- just working up again with 0.25% alternate days. Last year on 0.5% every day I got comments on my skin looking amazing. Was great as my skin is oily, fully of acne and blackheads, starting to wrinkle and with blotchy pigment left to it's own devices.

In order of importance you have SPF (if you aren't using SPF you might as well not bother with the other steps), retinol, acid tone and then anti-oxidants/peptides/ceramides/niacinamide which may help but aren't as important. Note cleansing isn't important and neither is moisturiser or toner (without acid). Toner without acid is pointless, cleansing should be cleaing but not stripping but won't improve anything, just leave a clean surface for other things. Moisturiser is helpful if your skin is dry but won't achieve anything lasting under your skin.

Acid toning - you can use a toner, a treatment a few times a week such as Alpha H, a peel (I use SR Skincare peels once a week) or loads of moisturisers have acids in now. Doesn't matter how you do it, just do it! The get rid of spots (salicylic if you have blackheads, lactic and glycolic if not), exfoliate gently and so make your skin glow and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Amazing.

Retin-A is the hard stuff and easily available if you look for 5 minutes. You might get results from over the counter retinol products but it won't be the same as Retin-A - glowing skin, acne banished, reduction in pigmentation. Build up slowly, SPF religiously, my skin did get a bit sore but I just slowed down and moisturised with Cerave and the results were fabulous.

Caroline Hirons is a lot of fun, I couldn't do a routine as long as hers and sometimes she is clearly recommending products from brands she works for - although I do think she genuinely only recommends stuff she really likes. If you have read her whole blog because I am a saddo who got obsessed you can also see where she's contradicted herself, usually after advice from a dermatologist.

ihatethecold · 15/04/2015 18:46

I don't agree that moisturiser won't do anything lasting under your skin!
My granny has used oil of olay her whole life, loves the sun and at 92 has amazing skin! No wrinkles at all.

chinnychinchin1 · 15/04/2015 19:21

Love a good skincare thread.

Here are some things I use.

Flannels! Wilkinson. But loads in dark colours. Use one a day. Wash and tumble.

Superdrug cleanser just as good as Liz Earle which I was using before. (Given up on oil cleansers, not because they aren't good but because they leave a mess in the bathroom. Liked Take the Day Off Balm a lot but gets mucky as it's in a jar.) Have a tube of Ren I might try and also a mini Eve Lom I got as a sample. I digress...

Like Ren clarifying toner (morning) and Pixie Glow toner (evening)

Use Ole Henriksen vitamin C Truth Serum in the morning. Smells soooo good. Una Brennan Vit C serum a cheaper alternative.

I use Vichy Aqualia serum on top of that. Used to use Hydraluron which was ok.

The highest spf moisturiser I've found is Estée Lauder daywear. Oil free. 25 spf.

In the evening i cleanse and tone and then rotate products. Really like Estée Lauder advanced night repair serum. Also like Ren Omega 3 serum oil. I'll always follow up a serum with more moisturiser. I've got Kate Somerville Age Arrest which is lovely but £££££ (from america).

I also use oils in the evenings. Clarins Lotus for oily skin and also Aesop Parsley Seed Oil (lots of people hate this).

Masks: using Aesop Primrose mud mask to get the gunk out. Love Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask. Also like Nuxe Creme Fresh - moisturising. Also got QMS Medicosmetics hydro foam mask - moisturising. Quite like Ren flash rinse 1 minute facial although it can be a bit scrubby so I usually skip that step.

I think that's it!

Never bother with eye cream - it's just moisturiser/serum in a smaller tube. If something's too harsh around your eyes then it's no good for the rest of your face.

I have tried the Nivea stuff, the Baby bottom butter - all greasy, inactive slop.

When I first started cleaning properly I thought it'd be a bit of a ball ache but it gets quicker.

chinnychinchin1 · 15/04/2015 19:21

Being fat and having oily skin helps.

bigbuttons · 15/04/2015 19:43

I have started looking at Sam Bunting too. Must remember to continue!

Kundry · 15/04/2015 19:51

Moisturiser only penetrates the top layers of your skin, which are dead anyway, plumping them up a bit. So it does make you look better but it does nothing to change the collagen or live skin underneath.

So your granny I'm guessing has good genes, oily skin (helps, there has to be some bonus to all those spots) and never smoked (go to any respiratory ward in hospital and guess the ages of the patients - they are all 10-15 years younger than you think, smoking ages you massively). Oil of Olay will do a bit of superficial stuff too but it's not preventing any wrinkles.

Depressingly, being fat helps too. My first wrinkles appeared when I lost 2 stone Sad

CremeDeSudo · 15/04/2015 20:02

Love these threads Grin

When do you use masks?

Another CH convert here. 6wks or so, really enjoying the routine and the improvement of my skin so far. First use of Liquid Gold last night and looking forward to the results!

kiwidreamer · 15/04/2015 20:04

Right. I'm inspired to get my skincare routine sorted, I have a family holiday to Australia, my 40th, family trip to Hawaii and my DH's 40th in the next 10 mths!!!

I had a nasty reaction to Lancôme Visionaire recently so I'm a bit wary! My plan is to have a Dermologica facial next week to sort some blackheads and have a bit of a treat. I'm probably a mid range spender on products, Dr Haushka was recommended earlier in the week for a mild, gentle cleanser.

Acid toner sounds a bit scary - any recommendations? I used to find the Clinique step 2 exfoliating toner stung like mad so stopped using it years ago and haven't used a toner since. Or should I get the Nip and Fab wipes and use them every other day? Then a serum and a moisteriser - by all accounts these two are personal preference, but any serum / oils recommendations would be appreciated.

chinnychinchin1 · 15/04/2015 20:05

I'd recommend the toners and serums in my post kiwi.

I don't like Lancombe - they use alcohol a lot and I don't get on with it

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/04/2015 20:42

Another CH fan here. One of my favourite tips of hers is to cleanse in the early evening rather than before bed - I do it pretty much as soon as I get in from work, bung on all the products, and can add in an extra step (overnight hydration mask or whatever) before bed if I need to.

CremeDeSudo · 15/04/2015 20:51

For toners I'm using REN clarimatte in the morning and Nip Fab pads in the evening. I'd recommend both! Planning on trying pixi glow tonic next.
