What is the perceived view on maxi dresses this summer?

They are still everywhere, but wondering if they are now a bit 'done'? Will you be wearing one this year either at home or away?

I have a couple of heavy jersey column maxi dresses that I will get out again this yeaR.

Would love to have a maxi skirt though, but I havent found any to be Flattering as although I'm tall and have a little waist I have big hips and a mum tum. The column ones hug in all the wrong place. I like the style remus suggested, aside from the out of stock new look one has anyone seen them elsewhere? Or can you suggest an alternative for a wobbly hourglass?

xiaozhu · 10/04/2015 11:21

I will be wearing them alot -partly because moving to the Middle East but also because they are flattering. Couldn't care less what the perceived view is!

Oly4 · 10/04/2015 11:52

I'm also in the 1%, they don't make me look pregnant at all. If you don't like them, that's fine of course. But I think loads of people look great in maxi dresses

DrankSangriaInThePark · 10/04/2015 13:39

OnlyLovers, sorry! Maybe you don't have mozzarella white arms and shoulders like me and ginormous Minnie Mouse size 7s poking out the bottom?Grin

OnlyLovers · 10/04/2015 13:51

Hmmm, I'm pale but not scarily pale (I hope ...). But I see your size 7s and raise you 8s!

OopTheShard · 10/04/2015 14:55

No way are they done!

The 70s style ones with thin straps and a double hem are very 'on trend' if you care anout that sort of thing, and are really cute (but not suitable for my body shape, sadly!).

Plain jersey maxis in grey or navy with thick-ish straps and a V neck ar going to be a staple for me this year.

I've got a few lovely patterned ones from last year, too, which are really nice for evenings.

Agree that the cheap, garish strapless ones arent great - but they never were.

meglet · 10/04/2015 14:57

essential between leg waxes.

OopTheShard · 10/04/2015 14:58

I'd be interested in a maxi skirt thread, though. Might start one!

So hard to find ones that are long enough for me and are flattering. The column style is vile on hourglass or inverted triangle figures (I'm sort of in between those two). But those flowy gypsy style ones feel very dated...

AlwaysOneMissing · 10/04/2015 15:02

I'm looking forward to wearing mine again this year.
And I disagree that they are as unflattering as leggings, as most are in a jersey type fabric, I think most people actually look quite good in them (but obvs they don't hide a thing!)

fredabear · 10/04/2015 16:55

I only realised I looked ok in them last summer, so sticking with mine! I have a lovely one in navy from me and em - £££ but worth it for the quality of the jersey

WonderingWillow · 10/04/2015 17:15

I love my maxi dresses (tall, hourglass shape) and I'll be continuing to wear them this summer. They're definitely still fine to wear!

Greengardenpixie · 10/04/2015 17:25

I have 3 maxi dresses. One is more for spring. I got it in the anthropologies sale. Its very boho!

All are jersey. One is a toast one which is denim jersey and gorgeous. Its not that long though but still lovely!

One is striped and is from Joules.

Gonna be rocking my bump in oneGrin

Hopefully · 10/04/2015 17:36

Hear hear Dexter. If I think it looks good on me, then fashion can stick it up its arse. And I am frightfully stylish.

GaryBaldy · 10/04/2015 17:48

I've never seen anyone look bad in a maxi, I think they look like the wearer has made an effort to look nice.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/04/2015 17:52

Ooh, GreenGarden, I absolutely love all yours!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/04/2015 18:28

I'm a wobbly hourglass (actually I am currently whatever an over-weight hourglass turns into, I think) and have a very thick jersey column skirt from Topshop, that is quite flattering. Too thick for hot days though.

Greengardenpixie · 10/04/2015 18:42

Thank you Koala

SuperScribbler · 10/04/2015 19:43

I've been umming and airing about this skirt, but this thread (and a 20% discount code) has prompted me to order it in the slat blue. It's also available in black.

arring and slate blue. I hate autocorrect!
