What is the perceived view on maxi dresses this summer?

They are still everywhere, but wondering if they are now a bit 'done'? Will you be wearing one this year either at home or away?

Ocean - I'd really like a grey one like that. Not seen one yet though.

Gem124 · 09/04/2015 21:05

I still love mine :-)

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/04/2015 21:14

They look lovely and elegant on me so I'm def wearing mine!

Redglitter · 09/04/2015 21:20

I've got loads I don't care if they're not in ill be wearing mine

Laska42 · 09/04/2015 21:34

If only I had the money for this it reminds me of this hockney painting

Also would love this though its abit like the moss top shop kaftan I bought last year

(id like to add that im well over 50 so remember this stuff when it first came out!!Grin

Oly4 · 09/04/2015 21:46

I love maxi dresses, the streets will be full of them.... And I look great in mine which is good enough for me!

CointreauVersial · 09/04/2015 21:51

Never liked them personally. All that fabric swishing around - I felt like I had gone out in my nightie.

dexter73 · 09/04/2015 21:53

You need a column shaped one then there is no swishing just slinking!

McFox · 09/04/2015 22:01

I love maxi dresses, but not strapless nork smooshers, they are nasty. They have to be well cut, with a nice neckline and fabric otherwise they just look crap. I bought an absolute beauty from asos last year when I was hugely pregnant and am looking forward to being able to wear it this year (although I may do myself an injury tripping over it while chasing my unruly baby)

SpecificOcean · 09/04/2015 22:13

remus let us know if you find one :)

AnnieMoor · 09/04/2015 22:26

I like them if they're close fitting and in a jersey fabric.

On the short and/or fat they are a disaster.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 09/04/2015 22:32

I'm another pregnant one who will be wearing them this summer!

I have a couple of strapless ones from Hush in navy and light dusty blue. Plan to wear with a denim jacket over the top - not high fashion but quite classic I think.

No to patterned polyester monstrosities.

I like the Dorothy Perkins one linked above but OOS. They usually do good simple t shirt shaped ones in plain colours and stripes.

Behooven · 09/04/2015 22:43

That is so true AnyFucker Grin

Financeprincess · 09/04/2015 22:48

You'll see plenty of them at Aintree this week (not an endorsement).

PrimalLass · 10/04/2015 00:59

I love them. Plain, racer-back vest, cotton jersey. The floaty maxis would look stupid on me though.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/04/2015 04:53

YY to body-skimming maxis in heavy-ish jersey fabric, with singlet/t-shirt/racerback tops.

A huge NO to strappy/strapless maxis in blousy, patterned polyester.

At the expense of sounding like a wanker, maxi dresses really, really suit me (tall, slim but high-waisted and with stomach the worst area, therefore hate the belted/skater-style thing). I find them cool, comfy and extremely flattering, so not planning on giving them up any time soon!

Jokerstotheright · 10/04/2015 07:33

I have seen people wearing them already. Having read this thread I might buy another one.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 10/04/2015 07:45

The problem with them, like with the legging, is 1% of people look good in them, but 99% are convinced they do.
I am 5ft 10 and thin and look bloody silly in them.

dexter73 · 10/04/2015 07:48

Surely all that matters is the person who is wearing the dress thinks it looks good on themselves? I dress because I like something not because someone else likes it.

FrugalFashionista · 10/04/2015 08:29

Sangria I agree 100%. People often wear them for the wrong reasons, to hide something. If you are pregnant, attending a beach wedding or a beautiful model type from LA or Australia, maxi dresses are of course okay Wink

OnlyLovers · 10/04/2015 10:14

Drank, you sound very similar in height and build to me and I think I look good in them!

Am doubting myself a bit now, though. Hmm Grin

It does depend on the type. Simple slinky ones are great on tall thin people (I hope!) but pretty much anyone, given one of the blowsy flowery ones, would look like a sofa stood up on its end.

LadyB49 · 10/04/2015 10:21

I'm wearing my first maxi this year. Scoop neck, black/white. Fit flops. Shift tube shape. Alas I am not slim at a size 18.....but hey hoo..... I'm prob in the 1%

Heels99 · 10/04/2015 10:22

They make all but the slimmest look pregnant, so if you pregnant go ahead!

KoalaDownUnder · 10/04/2015 10:31

I dunno, Heels - I'm not exactly among 'the slimmest' (5'11'', size 12, with definite hips), but I don't look pregnant in them. And I have people in my life who are happy to give me brutally honest feedback, so am pretty sure I'm not in the 1%! Grin

PrimalLass · 10/04/2015 10:36

I'm not tall or thin, but look nice in a vest maxi. So there.
