Can't link, because of the paywall, but if anyone else has seen the picture of Samantha Cameron on the front of today's Sunday Times..... tell me, is this fashionable? Did I miss the memo??

OP posts:
SinglePringle · 30/03/2015 18:44

Thanks for posting the photo. It IS a fashionable look but she's not pulled it off IMO.

AddToBasket · 30/03/2015 18:46

'I don't know her but I detest what she stands for'

Er, what's that? Having a career? A successful husband? Facing the world after losing a child?

You might dislike the Prime Minister (Eton?) but aiming your ire at her looks weirdly bitter. (I didn't like it when people did it to Cherie either).

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 19:05

She always looks bizarre.

The skirt is obviously expensive, but it looks very dowdy on her and it's too wide on the hips. It needs a more fitted top with it.

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 19:10

Er, what's that? Having a career? A successful husband? Facing the world after losing a child

Surely she meant being a Tory ho.

I'm from the same background as Sam, she didn't have to marry an arrogant right wing tit.

Casuallyvacant · 30/03/2015 19:24

she didn't have to marry an arrogant right wing tit.

In your eyes. I expect your hubby just oozes charm? Like you.

ZaraW · 30/03/2015 19:28

Like the skirt hate the blouse. She usually does dress well.

Quangle · 30/03/2015 19:32

I'm a bit Confused about the career bit tbh. How does one actually get to be brand manager for Smythson? Be posh and like handbags and notebooks? They both seem to get a free pass on the privilege meets power stuff imho.

SwedishEdith · 30/03/2015 19:34

It's a bit like this but this looks much nicer.

teawamutu · 30/03/2015 19:35

Massively frumpy imo. Should be a stylish look but she isn't remotely stylish so it doesn't work. Also agree re dated hair.

Now, Nick Clegg's wife does look fabulous whenever I see a pic of her. Can't abide him but I do wonder if he's got something going for him to have snagged such an intelligent, gorgeous, successful woman.

polyhymnia · 30/03/2015 19:38

Agree it's good she has a career but her job at Smythson may well be down to her connections, whereas Cherue's career was obviously the result of her own intelligence and hard work.

polyhymnia · 30/03/2015 19:40

Absolute agree about Miriam, Nick Clegg's wife - terrific and does reflect well on him he chose a partner of that calibre and (at least) his intellectual equal

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 20:03

Career shmareer, presumably she knew someone who got her a job.

Isn't Smythson now based in a tax haven?

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 20:06

I agree Miriam has a proper career, but she seems too nice for Clegg.

Dognado · 30/03/2015 20:07

God this is brutal. I like the way she looks, but regardless, think the way women talk about other women is really sad sometimes.

Trills · 30/03/2015 20:53

I do wonder if he's got something going for him to have snagged such an intelligent, gorgeous, successful woman.

I think I'd quite like him if I knew him.

I agree that we are being rather mean about SamCam here.

polyhymnia · 30/03/2015 21:32

But not about her hairdresser.

BrandyAlexander · 30/03/2015 21:44

Hhmmm.....if you're going to write a post slagging of a designer on a thread in S&B at least try and have some knowledge of the subject matter......

SamCam was the creative designer for Smythson for several years before her husband became PM. She designed the Nancy bag, which was one of the most successful bags (which imvho is a beautiful bag) that Smythson has ever produced. She earned a reported high six figure sum annual salary. I don't think they gave it to her just in case she ever became the PMs wife.Hmm

herecomesthsun · 30/03/2015 22:01

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder then, it looks like a right ugly bit of baggage to me!

BrandyAlexander · 30/03/2015 22:05

Definitely....beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... you are of course absolutely entitled to think it's a piece of crap.Smile That's why I said imvho. It's just that. An opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. That would make me a knob.

polyhymnia · 30/03/2015 22:10

But she may well have got the job in the first place because she comes from an aristocratic well connected family herself. Also is it known she actually designed the Nancy bag herself ?

polyhymnia · 30/03/2015 22:13

I mean, she might have been creative director using her networking skills etc but I didn't know she was an actual designer.

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 22:23

If you're going to take that line Novice, Smythson owes it's success to its ex managing director Sarah Elton. It's now operating from a tax haven.

The Nancy bag was ghastly.

BrandyAlexander · 30/03/2015 22:34

Smythson owes its commercial success in the 10 year period from the mid 1990s due to Sarah Elton. She's the one who expanded out their line from what they had become known for by then and also from memory, expanded their location beyond Bond Street. However, that commercial success wouldn't have happened without someone having designed commercially successful products. I don't think I said anywhere that Samantha Cameron was the sole reason for the Smythsons success? Equally neither is Sarah Elton. I think they were a great management team and both are equally impressive.

Again, that's entirely your opinion that the Nancy was an ugly bag. I disagree, and have two of them. But we don't have to agree. It would be rather dull if everyone had the same opinion!

bialystockandbloom · 30/03/2015 23:03

She dresses like what she is, a Tory wife. Yawn.

rockyryder · 30/03/2015 23:05

I don't think the outfit does much for her given that she is an attractive woman with a good figure (and a v generous budget).

The Nancy bag looks jolly unattractive to me too nor am I am impressed by her career at Smythsons which is likely down to her connections, as others have said.
Agree that Nick Clegg's wife is much more impressive and has a proper career which she has, no doubt, had to work very hard for. I doubt she is that is v 'nice', probably pretty hard nosed.
