The Apple & Inverted Triangle Thread

Frostycake · 23/03/2015 10:28

I can't see any recent threads on this topic so thought I'd start one.

For those of us who are 'blessed' with top heavy figures - whether that is in the form of big norkage or broad shoulders - and don't have the worry of big bums or saddle-bags perhaps a bit of a tummy though

It seems really difficult to find style/fashion advice for non-pears, which doesn't focus on how to hide your bum, hips, thighs, legs, so I thought I'd even out the playing field.

I thought we could have lists (god, I love lists) on which shops and makes or styles are 'apple' friendly (both high street and online and both cheap and expensive, so come and add your favourite apple/inverted triangle friendly shops, web sites, blogs, online retailers (in this and other countries) so that we have a one stop shop resource for all things apple/inverted triangle.

here's what I've learned so far which has helped me find my kind of clothes.

Boden: Bistro crops are perfect for apples as they have a larger waist than you'd expect for the hip size and the legs are narrow.
Topshop: Kristen jeans / leggings are perfectly cut for apples
DKNY/Donna Karan - everything fits.
Monsoon - great if you avoid the over-bedazzled stuff

My favourite blog is styleisalanguage simply because they show stylish, beautiful women of all ages. I also like theschoolrun and wearingittoday (WIT). I know a lot of Mumsnetters don't like WIT but I like her simply because she looks normal and un-model-like so I can imagine wearing what she's wearing. I also like doesmybumlook40 but I'm not that fashionable and fear I may look quite mad if I tried to emulate her look. (I look middle-aged whereas I don't think she does due to being thin and wearing dark sunglasses)!

Thanks Ronald Smile btw some great jeans in New Look for this shape am wearing a pair today turned up with wedge ankle boots and a grey fitted pea coat They are not high waisted but not super low either

GatoradeMeBitch · 25/03/2015 17:31

Evans. The black wide leg trousers. www.evans.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?searchTerm=black+trousers&storeId=12553&productId=8376627&urlRequestType=Base&categoryId=&langId=-1&productIdentifier=product&catalogId=33054

Unfortunately they 'improved' them a couple of years ago - which of course means they decided to make them from cheaper material, so the new ones I have aren't as good as the old ones. They are still very flat fronted though so don't add any bulk to my tummy area.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what is said but it is the person's own goggles looking at it that changes it.

Anyway - I am also unsure about the pants above as to me they look like cycling shorts... I wear v boring midis but in a fetching shade of nude usually. I find M&S sizes massive and size one or two down

noddyholder · 25/03/2015 17:52

I mainly wear those type too. I think is the one shape where weight really plays a big part unfortunately. The slimmer I am the more I can wear although basic shape unchanged whereas friends who put weight on on their bums always seem to look ok as their waist is unchanged.

2fat4that · 25/03/2015 18:42

Thanks Gatorade, they look ideal, I might order some to try.

Any more elasticated trousers anyone would recommend

I have knicker issues too. Currently I wear m&s biiiiiiiig knickers Blush Anything else rides up my bum and falls down.

GatoradeMeBitch · 25/03/2015 19:04

I should say, the wide leg trousers suit me, because my legs are chunky! If you have slim legs and a bigger middle wide legs would probably make you look larger than you are, Evans do slim leg styles too.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 25/03/2015 20:02

My knickers and jeans sometimes slide down, my tops sometimes roll up, then I'm left with a draft round my middle Grin I get very narky and uncomfortable on those days!!

Love that MV top, have been eyeing it up for weeks!

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 20:44

Noddy- I never said you were a super bitch or that you had used the word vile.

It was aimed at the person who did and who offended the person who posted the item that was called vile.

This is not a thread about 'what do you think of this' but people offering advice on how they work around their shape and clothing they recommend.

I am not the person who needs to adjust their goggles Hmm

I will leave it there now and hope this thread moves on in a constructive fashion.

kissy it seems to me as though you might be being more than a little bit arsey and very touchy

this is a thread where anyone can post their views and opinions - who made you queen of who can post what here or in what manner?

no one has to agree with a poster in terms of opinion or fashion sense and it only becomes personal when someone takes another's person's opinion of their clothing choice as a personal slight - they choose to do that or rather you choose to do that on their behalf

you were really arsey to noddy but perhaps you meant to be arsey to me.
If it was me you might as well stop as I'm immune to being bossed around boorishly.
Also if you could stop with the raised eyebrow they just make you look the victim of poor botox darling

TheTallestDaffodil · 25/03/2015 21:07

skim over the fecker is my new mantra! I always thought I was doing something wrong (while trying to emphasise a non-existent waist Confused)

RonaldMcDonald · 25/03/2015 21:11

I'm an avid wearer of jackets to provide an illusion of a waist - as I have none
Anyone else?

TheTallestDaffodil · 25/03/2015 21:16

And, got to ask, what's waist training? Might be desperate enough to try it!

marriednotdead · 25/03/2015 21:22

Hello again Smile

I seem to be a cut and shut version of several posters here! 50 next year, mega long skinny arms and legs despite only being 5'6", and stupid foot issues so have to wear orthotics in footwear sourced from the same sort of brands as kissy.
I've pretty much got the knicker issue sussed though, I find shorts or deep thongs much better. Knickers cut across the non existent arse cheeks before crawling inside so I gave those up. Freya/Fantasie bras work for me so I can wear matching sets. Absolute comfort has been these Elomi shorts though, which don't go with any of my bras. DH calls them my wrestling pants Grin

Frostycake · 25/03/2015 21:24

Yes Ronald I love a nice short, single button jacket (or zipped) with a fitted shape. Oasis are good & cheap. No pads in shoulders though.

Waist training (or corset training) is what the celeb types do to regain their waist after pregnancy. For those of us who never had a waist it's an option. I had an under bust model made for me --cost me a feckin fortune). never worn the bugger. Tried it on once and found I couldnt bend to do ... well, pretty much anything. Even if i did pull my ribs in though there's still the meno-pot to contend with.

Crying at 'wrestling pants.' Grin

Yes its strange that some of us have big arms and others have thin arms. The long legs and belly seem to be universal though.

Did anyone ever read Trinny & Suzanna's shape guide about 10 years ago? That seemed to split figure types even further. I was a goblet according to them; AKA 'brick on stilts.' Grin

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 21:34

Hmm Hmm Hmm

Grin

Next sell some longer length vests that are perfect for getting that layered up look. I like to wear them with my tube maxi skirts to cover over my tummy but show off my hips IYSWIMmand then layer a short jumper/ top over. It also means the top layer doesn't cling as much to the middle.

Also forgot to mention that a long silver pendant necklace helps elongate things I find.

Lastly I find a balconette bra very helpful in lifting the norks away from the rib cage to create more shape.

quirkychick · 25/03/2015 21:37

Ooh Noddy, lots of people keep recommending New Look jeans. I must have a look.

EveWornOut is mner I think as the AllWornOut blog was started in Style and Beauty A&W threads iirc.

I think there is a difference between those of us with norkage and those without. I am slimish and quite toned atm so quite straight up and down with medium boobs. After dcs I was more apple-shaped.

Lol about the pants. I often wear midis or shorts, I think some are m&s and some sainsbury's. I have had some slide down my bum moments...

Another one needing supportive shoes, love chunky boots, birkies, converse etc. I used to wear ballet pumps too, but no longer.

SilverHawk · 25/03/2015 21:40

De-lurking.... I have casual dressing sorted, may not be fashion but it suits me.
However, tell me I have to wear a dress for a formal occasion and I am totally lost. I can end up streaming through hundreds of dresses online and lose the will to live. Especially if its in the summer and I can't wear black tights to show off my best (ish) feature.

SilverHawk · 25/03/2015 21:42

I may have mentioned this with 'Fat, frizzy, apple'!...

Frostycake · 25/03/2015 21:56

If you need to look smartish, Wall is brilliant. They let you select your body type too. Some great stuff in the sale:

www.wall-london.com/spring-summer.html?shape=692

Quick Poll - How many of you feel that you look 'manly?' For me I think it's my broad shoulders but then I look at Anjelina Jolie and she doesnt look in the least bit manly.

OP posts:
Frostycake · 25/03/2015 22:03

Yes Kissy I used to wear balconette bras before I was de-norked. Lifted them a treat and avoided the pointy look.

OP posts:
SilverHawk · 25/03/2015 22:25

I still get Wall's catalogues. However, I fell out with them when they took over three months to give me a straightforward refund.
