The Apple & Inverted Triangle Thread

I can't see any recent threads on this topic so thought I'd start one.

For those of us who are 'blessed' with top heavy figures - whether that is in the form of big norkage or broad shoulders - and don't have the worry of big bums or saddle-bags perhaps a bit of a tummy though

It seems really difficult to find style/fashion advice for non-pears, which doesn't focus on how to hide your bum, hips, thighs, legs, so I thought I'd even out the playing field.

I thought we could have lists (god, I love lists) on which shops and makes or styles are 'apple' friendly (both high street and online and both cheap and expensive, so come and add your favourite apple/inverted triangle friendly shops, web sites, blogs, online retailers (in this and other countries) so that we have a one stop shop resource for all things apple/inverted triangle.

here's what I've learned so far which has helped me find my kind of clothes.

Boden: Bistro crops are perfect for apples as they have a larger waist than you'd expect for the hip size and the legs are narrow.
Topshop: Kristen jeans / leggings are perfectly cut for apples
DKNY/Donna Karan - everything fits.
Monsoon - great if you avoid the over-bedazzled stuff

My favourite blog is styleisalanguage simply because they show stylish, beautiful women of all ages. I also like theschoolrun and wearingittoday (WIT). I know a lot of Mumsnetters don't like WIT but I like her simply because she looks normal and un-model-like so I can imagine wearing what she's wearing. I also like doesmybumlook40 but I'm not that fashionable and fear I may look quite mad if I tried to emulate her look. (I look middle-aged whereas I don't think she does due to being thin and wearing dark sunglasses)!

Not keen on the Zara jacket (too loose) but love the all saints cardigan.

I like Mint Velvet too and have just bought this:

PoshPenny I can't do short skirts now either as they make me look like I might topple over. i stick to just below, just on, or just above the knee.

Honsandevels some jeans manufacturers cut for our shape. Think mainly those who cater to women over 50 (as we have a tendancy to put on weight around the waist) so DKNY jeans, Wallis, Debenhams, I always buy DKNY with a hint of lycra as they are cut straight and I know they fit. Also, I've heard 'Not Your Daughter's Jeans' are great too and they come in different cuts.

I see. I've only ever shopped in places where they assume a nice nipped in waist, or places where I buy jeans like H&M and New Look. I'm not sure I'd like the feel of a high waist being used to low ones.

Frostycake · 24/03/2015 16:58

I used to wear low cut jeans back in 2005 ish, but I found they slid down too easily (not enough curve). Still, I could get in a size 8-10. Can't do that with high waisted jeans.

Uniqlos scoop neck t shirts are great and I like their soft blasers and cardigan. I never have any luck with Boden trousers and skirts thought as always are way to big round the hips. Might give the Bistro crops a go when sale time comes round as really want to replace the ones I have which are huge on my thighs.

Gillybobs · 24/03/2015 17:52

Frosty I tied the zara jacket much tighter and it gives a lovely silhouette. The styling on the website isn't great

Gillybobs · 24/03/2015 17:53

Frosty I have that MV top too. Love it

ToastieRoastie · 24/03/2015 17:56

Ooo-er. I just did that body guide linked to above and it says I'm a spoon shape.

Has anyone else tried? Are we all really inverted triangles / apples or something entirely different?

My shoulders and upper arms are large compare to the rest of me. I'm still convinced I'm an inverted triangle.

treaclesoda · 24/03/2015 20:00

Do any of you other apples have knicker problems? The only knickers that don't fall down on me and end up beneath my bum are granny knickers. Or thongs. Thongs seem very 2005 to me and I'm not ready for granny knickers.

TheTallestDaffodil · 24/03/2015 20:31

Hi everyone, just joining the orchard! I'm a freakishly tall Apple, but I've cheated and had a boob job (reduction, obvs). Bit disappointed to find I'm still a curvy Apple and suit all the same clothes, just a bit smaller Sad.
I'm liking the casual day dress from boden, though it's daringly low cut (for me, anyway). It has pockets! Very comfy
Also Next have a layered, wide strapped vest that I find very flattering. It comes in Tall, for those who like longer tops.
Knickers are such a problem, treacle. I like wide sides, but not shorts, and not too grannyish - luckily DH is quite understanding, as long as they're not beige nude!

TheTallestDaffodil · 24/03/2015 20:34

TheTallestDaffodil · 24/03/2015 20:36

Loving those looks Frosty btw

Dancergirl · 24/03/2015 20:40

I love the Mint Velvet top frosty

I do like a bit of MV, am just tempted to have a browse in the week.

AddToBasket · 24/03/2015 21:20

Noddy, that look is damn near perfect - but, oh, the shirt tucked in. I absolutely long to wear my shirt tucked in. That bit of me is just too soft to draw any attention to.

Nudie Jeans are great. Their High Kais are slim round thigh and bum. Also Paige.

RonaldMcDonald · 24/03/2015 23:17

I like that look noddy also rips in jeans are now the thing that distances us from mum jeans apparently

RonaldMcDonald · 24/03/2015 23:19

Also married I have reviewed that top you recommended due to your raised eyebrow
I am currently wiping the blood from my eyes

BillStickersIsInnocent · 25/03/2015 07:22

Just bought this Boden oversized top

It ticks all the boxes for me - flattering neckline, 3/4 length sleeves, not too fitted.

Behooven · 25/03/2015 10:42

I love a longer length layered look. Have just bought this from house of fraser sale, it's really flattering.

Barrel shaped apple signing in. I have a huge rib cage, no waist, large stomach, moderate norkage, large arse ( that goes flat as a pancake when I loose weight) and narrow hips. My legs are long for my height so the middle bit is scrunched up Grin

I hate trousers. Won't wear the feckers so it's tube skirts and maxis for me. I have developed a bit of a uniform. Long black tube maxi dress (no empire line or waist emphasis) and I layer slouchy things over the top or sometimes more fitted things like cashmere v-necks/deep scoop necks and wear a scarf or necklace to keep the focus up top. Cropped jumpers and cardigans work well with my proportions too.

I found a trapeze top that nicely falls off the shoulder but had to buy it four sizes smaller so it is the right level of slouchy. Too much and it makes me look bigger around the middle. I got that one from Next.

I wear Boden lightweight boat necks over my dresses and Breton tops ( with sleeves) and loose linen t-shirts when it gets hot.

Peplum styles work well for my shape in casual jersey as long as long as they aren't too long.

I agree that asymmetric stuff works well. I have a top from Komodo that is slash neck and splits at the back that works well.

I actually like that cowl neck top with the hankerchief design. I have jumpers that are very similar in design and they are brilliant at detracting yet not adding pounds around the middle. Swing style coats work well as do reefer jackets that end at the hip.

I think the worst advice apples get is to create a waist by winching themselves in with a belt. It's such bollocks unless overstuff binbag is the look you are after. Skim over the fecker is my advice.

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 11:14

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 11:16

I can only post one thing at a time on my îpad so excuse the repeated posts.

komodo top

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 11:21

woolovers this works brilliantly on petite ( in terms of height Grin ) apples.

Their cropped cardigans are cut well too and the moss stitch jumper is extremely flattering.

KissyBoo · 25/03/2015 11:26

MAXI dress that I have about ten of!

They wash well, keep their shape and are extremely flattering.

2fat4that · 25/03/2015 11:35

Can I join in too? I've never had a waist, even when I weighed 8 stone (at 5 foot 7). My boobs are 34/36G, I have a flat bum, long legs - not as slim as they used to be, as I've put on two stone over the past year, which I'm now trying to lose, so a size 16 at present. I'm 50, so probably the oldest on here, but struggling to find my style, used to be jeans and sweater, can't quite get on with leggings - I love wearing them, but they look too little girly on me somehow?

I'll read through the thread now ...

quirkychick · 25/03/2015 11:41

I think this might be me, but I've come out as a straight figure! Ages ago I did the dressipi shape calculator, which included around the shoulders. I am more of an inverted triangle, but appley when I put on weight. I'm not massive of norks - more boyish.

I agree that with Frosty cake that Does my Bum Look 40 is good for straight figures. She did a hilarious blog on trying on a full skirt. EveWornOut is also good for appley shapes with norks. She doesn't always stick to the rules.

Things that work on me:
Layered top and skinny jeans/pleather leggings (H&M long layering vests are fab for not showing your middle)
Scarves for distracting from torso; beads/necklaces in summer
Shirts, gypsy blouses - the fashiony front tuck I can do, not the full tuck
I have a trapeze top that I use for layering, over skinnies
Just discovered Mint Velvet jeans, mid - rise and good fit - bought in the sale
In summer harems, can manage vest tops with thick straps/sleeveless tees
Wide-leg trousers with blazers/jackets/bikers
mini or above the knee straight or A-line skirts, full skirts are a no
Jumper/sweater/t-shirt dresses
Tube skirts that are asymmetrical
