The Apple & Inverted Triangle Thread

I can't see any recent threads on this topic so thought I'd start one.

For those of us who are 'blessed' with top heavy figures - whether that is in the form of big norkage or broad shoulders - and don't have the worry of big bums or saddle-bags perhaps a bit of a tummy though

It seems really difficult to find style/fashion advice for non-pears, which doesn't focus on how to hide your bum, hips, thighs, legs, so I thought I'd even out the playing field.

I thought we could have lists (god, I love lists) on which shops and makes or styles are 'apple' friendly (both high street and online and both cheap and expensive, so come and add your favourite apple/inverted triangle friendly shops, web sites, blogs, online retailers (in this and other countries) so that we have a one stop shop resource for all things apple/inverted triangle.

here's what I've learned so far which has helped me find my kind of clothes.

Boden: Bistro crops are perfect for apples as they have a larger waist than you'd expect for the hip size and the legs are narrow.
Topshop: Kristen jeans / leggings are perfectly cut for apples
DKNY/Donna Karan - everything fits.
Monsoon - great if you avoid the over-bedazzled stuff

My favourite blog is styleisalanguage simply because they show stylish, beautiful women of all ages. I also like theschoolrun and wearingittoday (WIT). I know a lot of Mumsnetters don't like WIT but I like her simply because she looks normal and un-model-like so I can imagine wearing what she's wearing. I also like doesmybumlook40 but I'm not that fashionable and fear I may look quite mad if I tried to emulate her look. (I look middle-aged whereas I don't think she does due to being thin and wearing dark sunglasses)!

I'm so glad I found you! 5'7", 32F. No waist, no bum, no hips. Weight all gathers round my tum and lower back. Mmm.

I find that trousers without a high waist slip off due to lack of waist/hip. I think the camel toe is due to having to pull trousers/jeans up over high hip bones to reach non existent waist.

I wear dresses for work (too short per our dress code but frankly I will flaunt my only good feature when I can!) and jeans at the weekend. Gap girlfriends seem to work on me - haven't found a dress style that really works yet.

Frostycake · 24/03/2015 09:25

Turkey How about this. TKMaxx to more traditional swimwear more suited to those of us who are blessed up top. I think this would look amazing on you. www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-womenswear/black-one-piece-swimsuit/invt/51080397

OneHand yes yes to the acres of flapping material around the hip arse and thigh in ASOS & M&S!

Balls your figure sounds great. I mainly wear pencil and shift dresses. Mainly, anything plain which follows the contours of my body closely. If I wear A-line it simply looks like I have a huge arse and thighs.

Courgette Arf! at the Rugby player shoulders. I have just posted on the 'fat arms' thread and shown pictures of said rugby arms/shoulders. They are commented on ALL the time. I am often asked if I play tennis or swim.

Does anyone else feel depressed when they see lovely, brightly coloured strappy tops? I sigh and touch them longingly but know I can't wear them without looking like a man in drag. < weeps >

Saint that's true about pulling up your pants in a vane attempt to make the waistband of your trousers meet your waist. So true. I also find trousers/jeans too wide at the hip too, compared to the waist so the extra material gets lost and folds in my crotch, creating an unbecoming 'V' Nice!

Hi all
How do I find out what I am

Blush
Frostycake · 24/03/2015 09:36

OK, now time for stuff that does work instead of complaining Grin

We look great in cotton/linen, fitted, short jackets/blazers
We look great in 'v' necks as this opens up the chest
Stiffer fabrics (cotton, linen, cord, are best as they don't cling to our middle
A higher waist on jeans/trousers prevents muffin top
Tunics suit our proportions
Ankle grazers are our friends, as are shorts
Dresses should be as short as you dare to show off the amazing legs
jeans can be any colour or pattern you like
Ditto skirts
Shoes can also shout for attention & be as high as you like

Oo! Forgot to say, one-shoulder dresses and tops are Very flattering for us as it makes the eye go diagonally across the body instead of straight across at the shoulder.

Wow married that's gorgeous. Love that dark denim blue colour.

Found the pic in a random online search. However link took me to pink over embellished and less attractive number on a US site. HOWEVER- just gone back and dug deeper.
It comes in three colours, is only about £30 and they ship to the UK!

Voila!

RonaldMcDonald · 24/03/2015 11:28

I think that top is grim married

Frostycake · 24/03/2015 12:01

That top puts me in mind a lot of Kettlewell's waterfall cardigans & jumperswhich get slated on here but are very good for apples and inverted triangles. I appreciate that they're not for the young 'uns though Grin

Frostycake · 24/03/2015 12:02

strikethough fail!

noddyholder · 24/03/2015 12:29

I am this shape and would never wear half this stuff! Tunics are a big no!

marriednotdead · 24/03/2015 12:31

Not exactly a young 'un so I appreciate that MY ideal top may not be to everyone else's taste. Thanks for your opinion though Ronald Hmm

I've reached the age where I've realised that fashion needs to suit my shape rather than just be what's on trend. I tend to avoid waterfall cardigans these days, once they've reached Bon Marche it's definitely too late for me Grin

noddyholder · 24/03/2015 12:37

I think try everything on eg if you want a white shirt try every shape and style until one suits don't just say I can't wear shirts etc. I find any sorts of rules never work for everyone'I don't wear anything belted or skin tight apart from that i wear what i want. I think tunic tops with slim trousers leggings looks really top heavy and frumpy. I like slash necks with slim jeans and boots Linen cotton peasant style shirts work well too. Don't really like v necks too busty on me unless v front and back that somehow works. Specialist shops too limiting I want the high street. Tube skirts and jersey t shirts (long sleeve) with a chunky knit over the top

noddyholder · 24/03/2015 12:43

s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/39/8c/cc/398ccc83c4d80233417f39af58993244.jpg I like this without the rips

Temporaryanonymity · 24/03/2015 13:20

That would be the worst top ever for me. I also like slash necks.

For work I usually wear stretchy jersey dresses. I have loads of them and I wear them to death with different colour cardigans. My cardigans are fitted and small, I'd feel awful in a waterfall effort.

I've got one tunic from Baukjen and I love it.

Frostycake · 24/03/2015 13:59

Oo Noddy that looks great. Love the jeans but yes, like you say, without the rips (a bit too try hard for me).

Does anyone else have to be careful with big scarves in case they look like they've got no neck? I find scarf size nearly as daunting as clothes sizing! Anything hanging down the front adds bulk and too much under the chin looks like I'm drowning.

I like waterfall cardigans as long as they're fitted, dark and high at the back but long at the front. I wear them at work over knitted dresses/pencil dresses.

OP posts:
Frostycake · 24/03/2015 14:13

I find the Baukjen scoop necks very flattering as a compromise between a slash neck (which I love but doesn't suit me) and a v-neck (which suits me but I think can look a bit dated).

I've noticed that the quality has changed lately though (they're thinner and shiny now).

OP posts:
Frostycake · 24/03/2015 14:19

See, I think this works for our figure but I have size 8 feet so they'd look clownish I fear!

Waterfall cardis are a minefield but I invested in this and it's superb, so flattering but not at all frumpy

www.us.allsaints.com/women/sweaters/allsaints-drina-cardigan/#

I also find a lot of Mint Velvet tops suit me, whereas my pear shaped friend can't wear their stuff at all

Gillybobs · 24/03/2015 14:28

I picked this up today to wear in summer, it's really lightweight and will be good over vest tops I reckon

PoshPenny · 24/03/2015 14:36

Just coming to join my people, I'm 46-37-42 a 38F, broad shoulders and broad back. Looking nice and finding stuff that fits is a nightmare. OK legs, I don't feel comfortable in skirts above the knee

Honsandrevels · 24/03/2015 15:12

How are you managing to wear high waists?! I'm v triangle shaped, big boobs, wide waist, no bum. I have to wear low jeans as there is only one inch difference between my hips and waist. A high waist, if it fitted my waist would be flapping on the legs and hips!

I've just bought a tube skirt which is v flattering on the bottom half but not sure what to put on top. I've not worn it yet.
