Are GHDs still the bees' knees?

Hi there - I need some new straighteners. I have GHDs which are probably about 8 years old. Until recently they were fab but I think they've broken - the light won't stop flashing so I assume they're not getting hot enough - they still straighten a bit but it's a bit crap and I think hair's getting damaged as having to over do it. Due to the age of them I'm debating whether to go for repair or splash out on new ones. I'd heard (on here but can't find the thread), however, that the new ones are not so good, even a new brand was being mentioned.

Any thoughts before I make this massive investment? (the £100 ones) Thank you. I need to dash off to make tea now, but I will be back on later.

TIA x

It has to be ghds

KittensOnAPlane · 13/03/2015 17:34

I'm still looking
there's talk that cloud 9s are better... buthe it's ghds that I want

squoosh · 13/03/2015 17:52

Apparently the quality of GHDs has taken a big dip. There are tons of ceramic straighteners out there these days. Cloud 9 are the ones people mention.

Jackie0 · 13/03/2015 17:54

The loreal steam pod leaves it in the dust , seriously.
It completely changed my hair

LeBoob · 13/03/2015 18:00

I love my cloud 9's & I was a die hard ghd user!

KittensOnAPlane · 13/03/2015 18:01

Which 9s do you have

confusedandemployed · 13/03/2015 18:03

I ended up with bog standard VO5s..
paid £20. They're fab.

confusedandemployed · 13/03/2015 18:03

Or so I mean Vidal Sassoon?

minibmw2010 · 13/03/2015 18:05

The people working at cloud9 are the ones that used to be GHD apparently so I'd go with Cloud9.

Maroonie · 13/03/2015 18:31

Cloud 9s are like GHDs used to be, I love mine

TheFlyingFauxPas · 13/03/2015 22:03

Hmmm Confused I must decide!

I've got a hair appointment on Tuesday so I'm going to ask her - maybe she has some - also maybe they're selling them :-)

Steam pod changed my hair too...bloody amazing time after time ??

Pumpkinette · 13/03/2015 23:34

Are you sure they are broken? The red light on mine always flashes when they are at the right temperature. It's a static red light when heating up. Mine are about 7 years old but have always done this and I think they work fine.

duckwalk · 13/03/2015 23:37

I'd started a thread a while back about ghd's as I'd invested in a new set after years with my original set, and found them to be poor in comparison. People had recommended cloud nines, and there was discussion about ghds now being manufactured in China (can't remember previous country) and cheaper materials being used.

Jess45761 · 13/03/2015 23:44

I have remmington straighteners I paid about 30 and they are the same as ghds don't waste ur money they are stupidly overpriced

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 14/03/2015 00:12

I keep replying to these threads to say Remingtons!

My GHDs finally died and I was resigned to forking out for replacements when someone told me Remingtons were seriously good. I was apprehensive but I'm so impressed Grin

TheFlyingFauxPas · 14/03/2015 10:58

Thank you - will take a look - I think my 1st ever pair were Remington but that was many years ago! Smile

TheFlyingFauxPas · 14/03/2015 12:36

Maybe it's just my hair that's gone really crap Pumpkinette Sad That's quite likely - will see what my hairdresser makes of it!

Thank you everyone for your replies. Well, in the end I did a complete u turn and went for these babies

The reviews were really good. Only £19.99!!! I've just quickly used them and the results are fabulous! My GHDs must have been broken for ages! I didn't use the full heat setting so hopefully a bit kinder to my hair too. Hair feels lovely and silky and smooth again.I will report back later to let you know if the smoothness lasts all day. I remember when I previously bought straighteners pre GHDs they worked well to start with then their fabness dwindled. These however have a 3 year warantee so if needs be they can go back. At £20 worth a gamble eh Grin

From a very sleek and shiny and not so poor FlyingFauxPas xx

Hooray! Those are the ones I have Smile

MrsBungle · 15/03/2015 21:53

I had Remingtons years ago and was seduced into buying ghd's. I never found the ghd's any better although they are still going strong.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 16/03/2015 10:09

I just have to share!!

I did my hair this morning from scratch - was so excited to see how it goes. Even when washing it my hair still felt smoother then when I straightened it felt almost there already so it must be long lasting. Hair now feels wonderful swishy and sleek - and that's before my very long overdue cut tomorrow (last cut on Halloween)

This is with my hair which trust me is a real challenge - it's thing and fine and it's a frizz nightmare - I only have to have an uncomfortable phone call to turn it into a brillo pad! Some days I get up, look out of the window and despair (98% of days as it is a humidity sponge!)

Thoroughly thoroughly recommend - and that's not even on the highest setting! They also come with a carry bag and clip closed. Maybe take ooh 30 seconds longer than GHDs to heat up but I can live with that Grin

it's thin and fine
