If I see another pair of those Stan Smith trainers... And as for the dungarees - step away from the fads ladies.

I like good style blogs, but lots just reiterate me-too stuff

Annabannbobanna · 05/03/2015 16:17

Dungarees make you look barrel-shaped and short legged.

applesandchairs · 05/03/2015 16:19

I like reading fashion blogs. I pick the ones I like that suit my style. By the way amber I watched your recent post about the leopard skirt as I have the same one. I wanted to know how the remaining 6 days went, did i miss the post or didn't you manage 7 days in the end?

WipsGlitter · 05/03/2015 16:21

No one here has flawless style. One persons rockin dungarees are another's oversized toddler. Ta subjective.

I have found a blog by a plus size model and it's great as she really works to put looks together that suit her and are not just following trends.

Anyone who blogs about any aspect of their life has to be able to take on the tediously regular criticism.

Gillybobs · 05/03/2015 16:24

Dungarees make me think of Rod Jane and Freddy

That said I think it takes guts and commitment to write a style blog so kudos to whose who do. My personal preference is for those that make a bit of an effort with the content (susiesoso springs to mind, what a hugely likeable person she is) rather than just a daily selfie.

ihatethecold · 05/03/2015 16:29

I've had my stan smiths for 15 years now.
They are my gardening shoes. Blush

MsBojangles · 05/03/2015 16:30

I grudgingly admire the colossal egos of these people, it must feel wonderfully liberating to adore oneself to such a monumental degree.

burnishedsilver · 05/03/2015 16:42

Stan Smiths make me think of 80s rappers like Run DMC. I can't take them seriously.

squoosh · 05/03/2015 16:47

Have gazelles had a comeback yet? I used to love them in the late 90's.

squoosh · 05/03/2015 16:49

and Superstars.

ZaraW · 05/03/2015 16:55

I had a pair of Gazelles when I was 13 so that would be 1984 I Loved them........ if anyone has a blog you are putting yourself out there so should be prepared for the negative as well as the good comments. I hate dungarees and leather culottes but if you are happy with your style who cares what some stranger on the internet thinks? The only blog I read is Poppy as she seems like a genuinely nice person.

PinkSquash · 05/03/2015 16:56

Gazelles and Stan Smiths were my go to shoes in the 90s so glad they're back in some ways but they make my feet look like boats.

I like looking at fashion blogs but I can't be bothered to care too much. Love to have the wardrobes to be able to do it!

Tanaqui · 05/03/2015 17:09

I like you in your dungarees amber, where's your blog? Probably too young for me though!

What's the plus size one Wips?

I want a high street middle aged one that isn't Bretons, scarves, and awkward poses!

AmberNectarine · 05/03/2015 17:17

apples you're right, I need to crack on with that one - especially as I was committed to the cause and even wore the damn thing in ankle deep snow - I do have the pictures!

I suppose the difference is I don't claim to have great style, I just like keeping a record of my outfits. I love clothes and trying new things. And yes, it does require a certain degree of self confidence - having suffered from a reasonably severe eating disorder for nigh on two decades I feel incredibly pleased that I have reached a point that I can bear to look at photos of myself, even posted a bikini shot last summer - not because I LOVE myself, but because I wanted to write a post on body image. How naive to think all bloggers are ego-maniacs.

I have no issue with people calling me an oversized toddler or whatever, but I do laugh a bit at people who take the time to come on and sneer at the efforts of others.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/03/2015 17:18

I like you in your dungarees, Amber, as I said on Twitter too.

Don't like Stan Smiths, especially the white ones.

My problem with the blogs is that they used to be about individuals playing around with styles by themselves, but now, because they all follow each other, they all seem to be just playing around with identical things, rather than their own interpretations. Those Tula boots with bare legs were all over lots of the blogs for a while, and (imvho) not looking v nice on anybody.

Just checked the thread again and Beatie Bow has made exactly this point, far more eloquently!

It's either that, or are many of them just being given the same freebies, perhaps?

I'm not knocking bloggers, and admire them for being brave enough to put themselves out there for scrutiny - but I do wish they wouldn't just all do the same things. That's why I prefer some of the more quirky young American ones, because they are more individual and perhaps a bit more alternative.

PoppyAmex · 05/03/2015 17:18

No one over 3 years old suits dungarees and as for cullotes... I can't even....

I wore them as a child in the 80s (along with every other child in continental Europe) and there was no excuse then, no excuse now.

AmberNectarine · 05/03/2015 17:19

squoosh I've been wearing my gazelles with flares, for the full 70s effect.

AmberNectarine · 05/03/2015 17:20

Thanks Remus - you should get yourself a pair Wink

treaclesoda · 05/03/2015 17:28

I liked Gazelles in about 1994 and I had no idea they had ever gone away Blush Grin

squoosh · 05/03/2015 17:31

I should have said have Gazelles had 'another' comeback as of course they've been around for yonks. When Kate Moss was a slip of a girl she used to wear them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/03/2015 17:31

The world is not ready for me in dungarees, Amber. At 5'2, size 12 and 32E I would look like Tweedledum AND Tweedledee combined.

MsBojangles · 05/03/2015 17:41

The comments on this thread are about bloggers in general aren't they, not you specifically, Amber.

FrugalFashionista · 05/03/2015 17:51

Remus you nailed it. Daily outfits are a bit like people's meal pics on Instagram unless the person has an unique point of view or voice.

I look for inspiration. I want to see what is coming. I want to be stimulated. Bloggers like Columbine, Hedvig, Marlien, Irina and Alex nail this and their blogs are better than magazines. I feel excited when I see what they pick, and probably for this reason they are often cited in magazines. Of the mum bloggers, Eve in All Worn Out has always had a somewhat unique style. Her style would not would not work on me, but I really admire her choices.

WipsGlitter · 05/03/2015 17:56

I think another problem is they all get the same freebies ( or at least the ones I read) so they all got those really expensive seven boot lane boots at the same time!!

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 05/03/2015 19:00

Indeed MrsB, they are. I just own all the stuff mentioned Wink
