Bags - like Mulberry but not as £££??

Umbrelladilemma · 13/02/2015 18:43

As I'm approaching 40 I've decided it's about time I got myself a decent handbag. I like the look of some of the Mulberry ones, but just can't countenance spending that much and also would like something a bit less obviously branded. Any suggestions for where I should look? Up till now all my bags have been middle-of-the road high street, eg. Nothing above the £50-60 mark and now I'd like to spend maybe £150-£250... any ideas?

I've had a look at Whistles, LK Bennett and Jigsaw and nothing is grabbing me - where else is there?
Thanks!

& other stories (I have a great and very unbranded bag). I also own several by Oushka and Yoshi

applecatchers36 · 13/02/2015 18:55

I got a really nice leather Doctors bag at Dune good quality & in your price range

nannyj · 13/02/2015 18:56

Peony and moore? I really like their hobo bag but I've never seen one in real life so can't comment on the quality.

Have you looked at Zalando? Loads of nice leather ones and free delivery and free returns.
TK Maxx too.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 13/02/2015 20:54

Russell and Bromley. (not sure of prices off the top of my head but would have thought similar to LKB etc)

Grandala have 30% off in a Valentine's offer, until tomorrow, code LOVE30

nooddsocksforme · 13/02/2015 22:19

spent years lusting after mulberry. At a ripe old age bought one in the sale. Not worth it -dont feel special when I am out wearing it-probably Fossil or Mint Velvet better

lavenderhoney · 14/02/2015 01:12

Dickens and Jones have lovely bags, and extremely well priced in a house of Fraser sale:)

Chottie · 14/02/2015 03:31

JL have a good selection of bags.

since a teenager I've had an.unconscious allegiance to Radley. Now have about 7 of them and all still wearing very well. Much more reasonable IMO - I could afford a Burberry but really don't see the point would rather spend my money on Rupert Sanderson shoes

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 14/02/2015 06:12

Wow, apparently my phone dictionary doesn't approve of Mulberry either and has check based preferences!

Leedscatgirl · 14/02/2015 06:57

Coach?

RiojaHaze · 14/02/2015 07:10

YY to Coach, they have some great ones.

My local TK MAXX had some really nice structured totes yesterday too. Osprey possibly? Also some Ralph Lauren ones around the £200 mark.

ajandjjmum · 14/02/2015 07:31

I would save for a Mulberry, for the following reason.

When I was approaching 50 (only 10 years to go OP!) I treated myself to a Mulberry, and have used it very regularly. The handle failed, and I (eventually) got round to emailing Mulberry about it. They are replacing the bag. I am SO impressed with their customer service, so just thought I'd say on this thread that although they are expensive, they really take ownership of their products, and treat you well as a customer.

Umbrelladilemma · 14/02/2015 07:38

Wow, thanks so much everyone, loads of great responses! I'm going to check them all out. I'm sure I'll be able to find something from all these options.

And excited about Zalando - saw them recommended on another thread recently so am keen to try them.

Love mumsnet!

Based on a recommendation here, I bought a grandala bag. The leather is lovely and they have a large selection of styles and colours. It also seems like they have good offers on fairly frequently.

Another suggestion is Tk maxx - I work near a branch that has a lot of the designer bags. I recently saw a beautiful orla keilly bag for £160.

RiojaHaze · 14/02/2015 09:48

Where do you live OP? There's a factory outlet in Shepton Mallet in Somerset which has great discounts on Mulberry products.

OneInAMillionYou · 14/02/2015 14:30

Modalu is a brand I like, have a few of their bags now and the quality is super.

IloveChoo · 14/02/2015 19:00

I recently bought a Peony & Moore bag and am really impressed with the quality. lovely thick leather.. I got this Georgia in teal colour, comes in others. They have an offer this weekend, 15% off..

Seconding Modalu.

Stokey · 15/02/2015 08:08

I got this MBMJ Natasha bag for my 40th, I love it. I think his bags are really great quality and come up cheaper than a lot of other designer ones.

For a smaller British designer, Mimi Berry does lovely bags.

Bambamb · 15/02/2015 08:12

I also like modalu. I got a second hand one on ebay for about £20 and it's fantastic, built to last.

Fregola · 15/02/2015 08:25

I wouldn't recommend mimi berry. The bags are lovely looking and nice leather but the dye is not stable. I bought a brightly coloured bag three years ago and used it last autumn with a light coat and its stained the coat terribly.

Mimi berry won't do anything about it because I bought the bag three years ago. They also asked if it got wet. I didn't dunk it in water of go out in a torrential storm but I am in the uk (where they make their flaming bags) so autumn drizzle is to be expected. Hmm

Looking for new options too so watching with interest.

IloveChoo · 15/02/2015 08:51

Thats MBMJ is gorgeous stokey....

IloveChoo · 15/02/2015 08:51

'that' even!
