Dungarees on women. Your thoughts please?

Just that really. I've noticed them creeping into shops. Would you where them? Could a 31 year old get away with it? They look so comfy! My toddler wears them so well..hmm...(ponders)

OP posts:

I ended up obsessed with dungarees last year.

In my head, I like them, I like this whole look (the one on the left).

I ordered several pairs and looked a total tool.

Haha Chicken that's brilliant.

OP, I empathise with your dungaree-curiosity but personally wouldn't be able to style it out. I did rock a floral McKays pair in the early nineties, of which I have very fond memories, but If I attempted any dungaree-wearing now it would be for nostalgia's sake, and not very cool. I'm quite sad about that though.

Oh crikey.

I think a pair of black skinny dungarees look fabulous on the right person.

marshmallowpies · 10/02/2015 09:00

I noticed Sharon Horgan was wearing dungarees in Catastrophe (the new sitcom) last week and was a bit hmmmm....so are dungarees back in now? Her character is meant to be pregnant but in the early stages, not so pregnant that you'd need to wear dungarees.

I did love dressing my DD in dungarees (and so much easier for nappy changes)!but she got to hate them - when I got them out the drawer she's say 'no dungers no dungers'.

My favourite 80s pair were peppermint green with stripes Smile

noddyholder · 10/02/2015 09:05

Skinny young and flat chested they look great.

noddyholder · 10/02/2015 09:06

I often wore them in the 80s with nothing but a tan or occasionally a lacy bra if it was cold

Laquila · 10/02/2015 09:10

The actual Noddy Holder in nowt but a lacy bra and dungarees is an image I now can't get out of my head...

InQuiteAPickle · 10/02/2015 09:15

Today 07:28 Lweji

"I think you mean the 80s."

Maybe late 80s then because I don't remember the early 80s. I had quite a few pairs in the early 90s though. They make me think of the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and programmes like that.

marshmallowpies · 10/02/2015 09:24

I also had a denim pair in the early 90s (era of baggy jeans and hooded tops) and when they got a bit worn out my mum suggested chopping the legs off.

So then I had denim dungaree shorts with frayed edges which I wore with a hooded top and espadrilles all summer long and I ROCKED!

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 10/02/2015 09:30

Yes, early 90's with floppy velvet hats, tie-dye t-shirts and platforms or sketchers.
There was a lot of fabric around in the 90's.

I really fancy a pair of skinny dungarees now.

TheYellowCat · 10/02/2015 09:41

What noddy said

Unless you're super slim and very funky they look a bit prisoner cell block H

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/02/2015 10:24

Awful, sorry unless you were one of those lucky people that looked gorgeous in anything (there are such folk)

JohnFarleysRuskin · 10/02/2015 10:46

Very cute on teens and pregnant women.

yeah, I noticed Sharon in Catastrophe wearing them, and I thought, 'its' too early' but she did look nice.

I always think of Come on Eileen.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 10/02/2015 11:27

Yes, yes, yes. I love them. There was another dungaree thread yesterday which was far more positive than this one.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 10/02/2015 11:41

There's a disgustingly beautiful lady at the baby swimming classes I go to, who wears them, denim, quite 80s style, and looks ace, but then she is ridiculously pretty, and slim the cah

They are not for the Dumpty of figure. Grin

50ShadesOfSummer · 10/02/2015 11:54

A lot of hate for dungarees on here and I'm not sure why. Are they any worse than high waisted jeans? I have a skinny pair that I wear with fitted t-shirts. I even have a denim shorts version I wear in the summer.

I would draw the line at wearing them with a checked shirt.

SirChenjin · 10/02/2015 11:58

Because dungarees look crap on the vast majority of people, that's why - unless you're young, slim, tall and leggy like the model upthread. Anyone who looks that way would look good in a bin bag.

Lweji · 10/02/2015 12:03

Maybe late 80s then because I don't remember the early 80s.

That's what I thought.
I remember them in my teenage years, and that would be second half of the 80s, but don't remember them in the 90s.
Not important, though.

SirChenjin · 10/02/2015 12:06

Definitely mid to late 80s - made famous by Dexy's Midnight Runners, Bananarama, and the late. I remember them well - but even then knew that they wouldn't be a good look on my 5 foot 1 skinny frame.

Stinkle · 10/02/2015 12:11

I don't hate them, I really like them. I invested way too much time and effort trying to find the perfect pair last summer. I must have ordered and returned a dozen pairs in my quest. I was going for a slim fit pair with a fitted t-shirt

I'm 5ft 9, size 8 and was right at the back of the boob queue, so in theory they should look OK on me.

They didn't!!!

I had a baggy pair as a teenager. I was born in 76, so it must have been very late 80s/very early 90s

oversomeniagara · 10/02/2015 12:20

I had two rather fetching pairs as a teenager in 1999/2000. One was khaki and the other navy blue. You could zip the legs off and I often used to attach legs from the other pair for added 'style'.

And I wondered why no boys ever fancied me...

I would not wear them now but I think if you're skinny/ flat chested like Alexa Chung yo could probably get away it.

KissyBoo · 10/02/2015 12:22

Even that model looks shit in them. Nuff said.

KissyBoo · 10/02/2015 12:27

They were in in the 1980's and 1990's during the rave/baggy scene and then later mid -90's the trance/hippy one where they took the form of splendid patchwork feckers adorned with moons and stars and if my memory serves me well, some velvet tie dye efforts too.
