How Sexy Do You Dress?

I recently had a new baby this summer and like most new mums I spend my days in comfy and rather shapeless clothing. I am back to my pre-baby weight but I still don’t really feel desirable or sexy nor do I normally have the energy to spend putting on makeup or dressing up. This is a big departure from how I dressed pre-baby and I think that this change from dressing with effort and care to wearing workout clothes everyday has left me feeling unlike myself.

On New Years eve, my dh and I were invited to party and as it was the first night I was spending away from the baby I decided to dress up and put in effort with my hair and makeup. I wore this dress www.selfridges.com/en/celeb-boutique-danielle-bodycon-dress_143-3003429-DANIELLEPINK/ I felt great and like my pre-baby self. It made me realise that maybe I should put in the extra effort in my daily life to look good so that I felt better about myself. It got me thinking - how sexy do you dress on a normal day?

I certainly wouldn’t be wearing clothing like my new years dress on daily basis but was thinking about ‘sexing up’ my daily clothes a little, such as trading my baggy t-shirts for fitted v-neck,wearing high heels more often, not spending my days in scruffy sweats and workout clothes and putting in the effort with my hair and makeup.

How sexy do you dress/how much effort do you put in to what you are wearing/hair and makeup?

Blimey.

If you have young children then wear good, supportive footwear such as trainers or DMS. Going base over apex isn't a good look.

IPeeInTheShowerOhYes · 03/01/2015 12:10

I do not dress "sexy" on any kind of basis. The constant banging on (cough) from Trinny and Susannah/Gok about having to look sexy the whole frigging time was extremely undermining.
I try and dress attractively, for me, for my DP, for anyone who sets eyes on me, for my own self esteem and if that means DMs, jeans and a sweat shirt one day, it can equally mean a short skirt, thick tights and boots the next and at new year a hot pink prom type dress with heels.
By all means reconsider your wardrobe if you want to, now you are past the baby stage but do not feel pressured into looking "sexy"

claraschu · 03/01/2015 12:11

Sexy is in the eyes of the beholder, or perhaps the beholdee.

IPeeInTheShowerOhYes · 03/01/2015 12:15

PS I'm with the recent Caitlin Moran article on high heels. They are uncomfortable, impractical, restrictive and men don't do them.
When I say heels, I'm talking my inch and half wedges.

Not that men do them either but I can run in them and crush beetles.

Bartlebee · 03/01/2015 12:15

Yes, only a bloke would like that Selfridges hooker dress.

I wear Converse but my feet are only a 3, so I avoid the Sideshow Bob look, hopefully.

I think the Selfridges dress looked nice and the colour is pretty. Not hooker ish at all. I'm sure you looked great in it OP, hope you find a day style that makes you feel good about yourself.

MizK · 03/01/2015 12:45

And pooette I'm not offended if you think converse and skinnies look dishevelled. I know I never look scruffy/trampy so I don't mind what you think and I doubt any confident person truly gives a toss what others think of their look (including you I'm sure!)

museumum · 03/01/2015 13:10

I don't dress "sexy" in the daytime, ever. Most of my at home clothes get worn for work too (with smarter shoes and jacket) so def not sexy.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 03/01/2015 13:18

I love my gold converse.

FrancesFarmer · 03/01/2015 13:21

I don't dress sexy - to me, sex is something you do, not something you look like. That said, I make an effort to avoid looking frumpy because it makes me feel bad. The view that trainers should only be worn for doing sports is old-fashioned, in my opinion.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/01/2015 13:42

See, it depends how you define sexy. Do you think sexy is dressing for mens approval, or so that you feel good about yourself?

Chillibox · 03/01/2015 13:45

I always try and wear very fitted clothes...my figure is the best thing about me so I may as well show it off! I don't like revealing too much skin but I do like a nipped-in waist, skinny jeans, tops that cling to my arms etc. plus bright colours which suit me.

BaronessBomburst · 03/01/2015 13:50

High heels and small children do not mix.

mowglik · 03/01/2015 13:51

Have I missed something why is the OP being asked if she is a man?

I don't dress sexy but I try to dress to emphasise my curves - I always more or less covered with no cleavage so it takes some imagination but fitted tops with boyfriend jeans or semi fitted with skinnies is my look. I like dresses that are fitted too, hate the boxy dress and top look looks to masculine on me as I don't show any leg flesh

queenbrunhilda · 03/01/2015 14:02

Appreciate no-one loves a pedant, but this has got me wondering about sexily Vs sexy? Sexily: verb, sexy: adjective?

lurkingaround · 03/01/2015 14:06

True. I would've thought 'sexily' (is that a word) would be more correct?

Twinklestein · 03/01/2015 14:12

I just hate trainers unilaterally full stop. I wouldn't wear them unless I was running. And they're uber-mumsy.

I can cope with the camel/brown leather ones that are more like shoes, but I still don't wear them.

ZammoMcGuire · 03/01/2015 14:13

the adverb thing has been annoying me too

ZammoMcGuire · 03/01/2015 14:13

no woman would say 'dress sexy'

its the language of porn sites/PoF

ZammoMcGuire · 03/01/2015 14:15

I ( happily married) some times look at local singles things on the Guardian and Times websites. Am still reeling from the kids PE teacher saying he is into skinny dipping and erotica

I don't think I have ever dressed sexy in my life, except for specific bedroom antics.

On the rare occasion I go to a formal event I think I scrub up ok, but I don't think I ever look sexy.

I have friends who look beautiful and stylish, but I'm not sure I know anyone who dresses "sexy".

Off to ponder.....

TheBuskersDog · 03/01/2015 16:24

Some people would never look sexy no matter what they wear, others look sexy in tshirt and jeans, it's nothing to do with the clothes.
