GHD - REALLY worth it?

Are GHD straighteners REALLY worth the extra expense?
If not, which other brands do you suggest?

Have seen a GHD straighteners plus hairdrier set I quite like, never indulged in myself to that extent price-wise, but feeling like my hair is a bit crap and I need to do something about it! Help!

I have fine hair, would like it to look more glossy. Doesn't seem to be a lot I can do to make it less fine/give it body - I even come out of the salon with it still pretty flat (or it falls within an hour), but at least it is glossy! Hence me thinking of GHD straighteners.

Yes they are great. Dh got them for my birthday and I was a bit cross about the expense but I love them now. Don't know where to get them cheap though.

Yes, they last for years. However when mine die I'm getting Cloud 9s. I have the hair dryer it is good but next time I'm buying a Parlux.

But the hairdryer? Is that worth it? Basically paying £65 for a hairdryer. I have a basic hairdryer, it's an old travel one. I use it to dry my hair with, not do any styling! Am a complete novice.

I'll be the lone voice of dissent. My mother very kindly bought me some ghds - these were the first straighteners I'd had and they are really good. when they eventually died on me I was going to buy another pair...until I found out how much they cost! I mainly use them just to give some bounce to my fringe and to turn ends of hair up or down and couldn't really justify the price.

I looked at reviews and bought some Remington pearls - about £30 on offer I think and told myself that if I didn't like them I'd get ghds for birthday/Xmas. Anyway, I have been v happy with the Remington ones and can't honestly say I've noticed any difference in the results.

So personally I don't think ghds are worth the money - but obviously a lot of people do!

Argh! Thanks, IvyMay! I appreciate the opinion. Leaning towards a yes with the majority vote, but still baulking at the price a little!

Can't give feed back in the hair dryer although watching with interest as I want one

Cloud 9s because you can choose heat setting and they have different styles for different hair types. They have a wide iron which is probable the one I will get. They also turn off after 30 minutes of non use and have a protective guard.

The hairdryer is the lightweight one and my hairdresser uses it and swears by it.

Think I will get the straighteners, and not bother with a hairdryer, feels like a huge expense, the straighteners are pricey enough as it is!

(Unless someone comes along before the weekend to tell me the GHD hairdryer really is worth it!)

Yes can't live without mine, so much better than any others I have had, had the ones I use now for 5 years and there still going strong, well worth the money.

GHDs are definitely the best straighteners.

However beware of using them every day - my hair is fine and after a couple of years of daily use my hair was so dry and frazzled I had to use them, so it became a bit of an addiction.

I now use a Parlux and a round vent brush and take the time to blow dry it straight in layers - much kinder to my hair, although it doesn't get as glossy it's so much thicker and healthier now it's worth it. I think the dead straight look is over anyway - although some people get a great look styling waves with them, I still think avoid over use.

It was only 2 weeks ago I asked a similar question and I ended up buying Nicky Clarke Straighteners for £40 at half price (so should have been £80) and so far Im impressed.

I always end up breaking mine through my own carelessness.

Probably should add though that I was asking the question as I couldn't afford to get GHD's and didn't know whether I should spend a bit more (£50 or so) and get a 'quality' pair or spend less (£20 or so) with a view to buying some GHDs in January when I can afford them.

I went down the middle. Will see how they go and decide next time.

The GHD's, a definate yes! I've had mine for about 10 years now and they are still going strong. They are definately much better than any others I have tried (and I have tried a good few). My hair is long, thick and very wavy and an absolute nightmare to do anything with!

The hairdryer is ok...I got it last year as a birthday gift because mine was on it's last legs.
The only thing I would say is that it is very hot, even on a low setting. I find it dries my hair too quickly, and I cant manage to get it all around the brush etc on time so I end up a bit fuzzy despite frantic attempts to try and blow-dry it into some kind of a style!
I would go for the GHD's and invest in a decent round vent brush so you can give your hair a nice shape. I've had other cheaper hair driers that were just as good, if not better than the GHD one. Just go for a high wattage one with a concentrator nozzle to help with the straightening. The GHD one does look fancy though

I've had my ghd straightners for 5.5yrs, still work great. I can't comment on the hairdryer but I love the straighters.
I use mine to curl and wave my hair as well as straighten so to me they're worth the money.

MakeMeWarm, that is good advice, I will bear it in mind. I don't think I am likely to use them every day (sahm!) but there is a chance I could get addicted! I don't think dead straight will really suit me (hair so fine and lank!) but if I can get shiny waves and curls, I will be happy. Holly, thanks for the curling confirmation!

Thanks, lorney re the hairdryer advice. I will just get the straighteners, I do have a working hairdryer that will have to suffice. One day, when I am rich!

Biscuits, gah, I do like a bargain, I just feel torn - SO many people saying GHD are superior. I hate overspending.

I would be a frightening hag of a mess if I didn't have my GHD's - the regularly turn this type 3 curly haired freak into a sleak, raven haired goddess (ok ok, maybe not that much of a miracle worker!)

I've had mine over a decade and would never be without them. They are invaluable and years of use mean that I can get my almost waist length afro-mop straight in about half an hour.
