GHD - REALLY worth it?

AbbyCadabby · 19/12/2014 13:41

Sorry if this has been done to death.

Are GHD straighteners REALLY worth the extra expense?
If not, which other brands do you suggest?

Have seen a GHD straighteners plus hairdrier set I quite like, never indulged in myself to that extent price-wise, but feeling like my hair is a bit crap and I need to do something about it! Help!

I have fine hair, would like it to look more glossy. Doesn't seem to be a lot I can do to make it less fine/give it body - I even come out of the salon with it still pretty flat (or it falls within an hour), but at least it is glossy! Hence me thinking of GHD straighteners.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and anywhere I can get bargain GHD, if I do go for them?

GHD's tame my hair (frizzy) better than any others, so well worth the extra. In facts I wouldn't buy anything else. However, you must use heat protector as mine breaks when I keep forgetting to use it.

I usually buy the L'oreal one for £5 and it lasts months.

They are amazing.I only run them quickly through my very straight hair on special occasions but I worked with a girl with mega curly hair who used them every day and until I saw her "au naturel" one weekend I didn't realise her hair wasn't as straight as mine.

I have to say, I got the Remington Colour Protect straighteners from Aldi for £14.99 a few weeks ago & I am really really impressed.

They just as good as my GHD's. I've even received compliments on my hair since using them! I know they can go to a higher temp than my GHD's can.

Yes and when mine didn't get hot enough suddenly Ghd fixed them, no problem, didn't care how old they were (!) and posted them back to me...so fab straighteners and amazing customer service!

I've had mine since DD1 was 14 months old - she was 13 in October and they're still going strong. Worth every penny IMHO

My first pair lasted 7 years and the lead was repaired for free during that time, they were amazing and worth every penny.

My mum kindly brought me a purple pair last Christmas and they simply weren't as good, I mentioned it to my hairdresser and she said the heat had been reduced.

I love love love the hair dryer. It's flipping brilliant. Best hair I've ever had. Everyone I know who's tried it loves it too.

I had thick ghd straighteners which were fantastic. Had them for at least 8 years and still worked fine. I wanted to put a brazilian blow dry treatment through my hair and needed straighteners that went beyone 180 degrees. Ghd's only go up to 180's. I read reviews for higher temp straighteners and bought Remington keratin therapy set for about £40 and they are fantastic, even better than my ghd's. I actually sold the ghd's to compensate for cost of new straighteners. I have used the Remington set nearly every day (I have the coarsest, curliest hair known, pubic hair but on head) for 2 years and they are still going strong.

I don't feel the ghd's go hot enough for my hair (though know heat isn't good!).

my mam got a pair of ghds this year, a newer model, theyre really not worth the money anymore i dont think. i have got some 'cheap' ones that i think are equally as good if not better than the ones my mam got.

that said, if u do want to order them make.sure.it is a legitimate site. they are lots of fakes around. from ur link and the price the site u looked at looks legit but double check.

for gloss try moroccan oil shine spray its amazing and smells gorgeous can get it on the net for about £20. they do a treatment oil which is really good too. lookfantastic do it and feelunique i think. ive used both sites before. if ur hair is flat u can buy powders in superdrug and boots etc that u put on ur roots and gives u really good body. usually about a 5a. i like the got2b and vo5 ones.

I heard that the original GHDs were great (this is true, I'm on my 2nd pair) but the company got brought out and they moved the production factory and now they're not as good quality (and twice the price). The original factory is where they make cloud 9s now.
I don't have 100% proof this is true I heard it from my hairdresser (who doesn't sell cloud 9s so not biased!!!!)
I am getting cloud 9s next time. You can choose heat settings, they get hotter, and they have a safety shut off when you put them down.

I have a ghd air dryer and its great. Best hairdryer i have had. Recommended by my hairdresser above a Parlux! Lovely sleek and shiny hair...and believe me..it was so dry at one point!!!

Argh, I am all confused again.
And I think I want the dryer now too!

I don't have course or curly hair - I just have fine, flyaway, limp hair that needs a bit of shine, and ideally a boost/bit of body but I've pretty much given up on that latter bit as even after a salon visit, no body stays in after more than an hour, that's if even the hairdresser manages it in the first place. And I've tried a few. I have crap hair. I think shine and maybe a bit of a wave are all I can hope for!

With that in mind, what should I get?

Yes and no! I had fab GHD wide plates for 10 years til they stopped heating up hot enough they lasted longer than my marriage and have replaced them with slim Coriole straighteners which are awesome and £45!!

Yes, I use mine for curling, waving or straightening for about twenty minutes every day and I've had them for 6 years

i used to work as a hairdresser and i canr imagine a hairdryer making much difference to your hair. we werent taught such a thing and working in a salon i never saw any difference to hair depending which dryer was used.

i doubt that you will regret buying ghds if you can afford them then treat yourself. if you have any reputable salons nearby pop in, they may have offers on this time of year.

as for body and shine seriously have a look at the powder its amazing and the moroccan oil shinespray is a good investment and lasts ages.

Well gingerbreadmam...i think its the cool air that helps with shine and the power of it that makes the difference. If you compare a cheap travel hairdryer and a really good one..there is definetly a real a difference. Maybe its just an ability to style it better.

Get ghd Eclipse straighteners - they're the newest version and much lighter/easier to use. They only heat up to 180 degrees as (apparently) higher than this can destroy the hair's keratin. The latest ghd hairdryer is Aura - it has a directional flow and cools hair so is considered a styling tool, rather than a hairdryer. It also costs a fortune. I probably wouldn't invest in the dryer - it's quite heavy and cumbersome to use although does make my fine hair fairly sleek and shiny. Other options for dryers are Parlux. The team who founded ghd now own Cloud9, btw. HTH.

yes blasting hair with cool air does close the hair folicles making it look shinier, sorry i was just thinking of my own hairdryer which does have a cool shot on it and was less then £20. if u can afford it though then investing in a good hairdryer is a nice treat.
