Have I been committing fashion faux pas at work?.

Just read the other black tights thread and noticed a lot of hate for black sheer tights. I wear them pretty much every day to work with a grey/black suit. Opaques aren't formal enough and look odd with a suit anyway. Fishnets etc a definite no for work. I do wear nude tights in the summer, but in winter and autumn tend to go for sheer black tights.

So, what is the alternative, because I can't see one!

Fishnets to work would be all kinds of wrong - well certainly to my work, though I suppose it depends on your employment....

Opaques with party dresses was the look a few years ago, but that is moving on and the fashion forward are increasingly choosing nude/sheer.

Work is not about being fashion forward for me, it is about being smart & weather appropriate for the commute. So opaques in winter & sheer nude/black in summer. I am slim, so the unflattering bit isn't a problem for me.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 09/12/2014 07:54

If I wore fishnets to work I think I might get fired Grin - good to have the idea there if I need a hasty exit strategy

K middy has a work dress code, which states that she has to wear tights, no bare legs .

She's only doing her job, give the women a break !

KikitheKitKat · 09/12/2014 08:36

Just because something is not currently in fashion, doesn't mean it 'looks horrible'!. When they are back in again everyone will wear them and say how much more elegant and sexy etc. they are than those granny's lisle stocking style opaques were. Stupid fashion!

And before you ask I'm on this thread because I like clothes and I like the discount tips too!

HappyGirlNow · 09/12/2014 09:01

I think the problem is sheer black tights are coming back in and if you're young and slim and gorgeous they look on trend, if you're not it looks like you're stuck in a time warp...

Bonsoir · 09/12/2014 09:04

I don't think sheer black tights are "formal". They make me think of cocktail parties and brothels.

Samantha28 · 09/12/2014 09:23

Well that says more about you than it does about the tights, Bonsoir Wink

Roussette · 09/12/2014 09:44

I love sheer black tights and I don't frequent brothels! BUT I only wear them on a dressy evening out. I think they are classy and elegant and I have good legs, why wouldn't I want to wear them? I went to a posh do the other week and there were loads of women with fab little black dresses, high heels and sheer black stockings/tights. Opaque makes it casual.

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 09/12/2014 10:17

North or South, Rousette?

I have heard that Americans are baffled by the Brits' love of black opaques to be fair and never wear them.

I can't see sheer black tights worn with a skirt suit as anything other than Melanie Griffith in Working Girl I'm afraid. I can imagine on a young slim person wearing a party dress they could look good - I haven't seen it though, mostly bare legs, nude tights or opaques (South).

I'm wearing sheer black tights under a grey knitted dress to work today (I usually only wear opaques), with a pair of flat, black boots. I look fucking great ! Xmas Grin

Roussette · 09/12/2014 10:36

Posh Do was South makemewarm - sort of a cocktail party type thing. Perhaps everyone was old and dated me included!

alpacasosoftsnowgentlyfalling · 09/12/2014 17:07

I love K Middy - just wish she would wear decent tights.
I don't think she has to wear tights does she ?
Im sure Diana didn't always ?

I think I have it- sheer tights always look like a pack of 3 for a fiver nasty tights that ladder before the day is out ( which is why you get 3 !)

They just look so cheap and thin ( and bloody cold)

Samantha28 · 09/12/2014 18:26

Poor k mid, she must be reading this thread . Here she is in New York with week wearing black opaques

Eastpoint · 09/12/2014 18:29

I think the casual observer might not even notice very good quality nude sheer tights - if they are well matched to your skin colour & matt they just help you look more polished. I'm really not into the limo look - heels too high to walk in with bare legs.

NeitherHereOrThere · 09/12/2014 19:13

Kate needs to re think her shoes - the black suede heels look scuffed and scruffy and the nude ones are just horrible.

I wear opaque tights for work which work well with my work uniform of shift dresses and above the knee skirts with fitted jackets and tops. I wear sheer tights with cocktail dresses when dressing up for the evening.

alpacasosoftsnowgentlyfalling · 09/12/2014 19:38

They are not quite opaque Samantha
agree about the shoes but if she spent shed loads on shoes she would be criticised as well.
I really feel for her when it is boiling and she has to wear nude tights with her summer dresses.

MaybeDoctor · 10/12/2014 07:19

It always bugs me when I see the photograph of the Princess of Wales in the black cocktail dress (on the night of Prince Charles confessing to adultery on tv) and she looks great, but could look so much better without the sheer black tights....

Roussette · 10/12/2014 08:10

Maybe are you saying she should've had opaques on instead?! Confused She had fantastic legs and I loved the sheer black tights with that dress.

MaybeDoctor · 10/12/2014 08:56

No, bare legs or invisible sheers!
It was late spring/early summer after all.

HollyJollyXmas · 10/12/2014 09:03

Sheer black tights are coming back, you mark my words! Have seen loads of young, fashionista women wearing them lately.

Fwiw, OP, I agree with your reasoning behind wearing them. Opaques arent formal and nude tights in winter look ridiculous.

Wrt Princess of Wales, that dress was off the shoulder and low cut, so plenty of flesh on display. It then looks very odd in the pictures to have sheer black legs - unbalanced, somehow.

Anyway, I will shut up about it as it is not as if the poor lady can change her fashion choices now...:(

SuperScribbler · 10/12/2014 09:21

I was at a lunch yesterday (not in the UK) with women aged from mid-20s to mid-50s from all round the world (nationalities at my table included Italian, Polish, American, French, Dutch and Hungarian). The dress code was on the smart side and most were wearing dresses with tights. I was the only one wearing opaques and the rest were in sheer blacks or nudes. Think they are making a return.

JapaneseMargaret · 10/12/2014 09:27

I think opaques look awful. They're akin to leggings, and the less said about leggings, the better.

Black opaques with suits look so frumpy to me.

Besides - black does not go with everything!! Even in winter...!
