Have I been committing fashion faux pas at work?.

Just read the other black tights thread and noticed a lot of hate for black sheer tights. I wear them pretty much every day to work with a grey/black suit. Opaques aren't formal enough and look odd with a suit anyway. Fishnets etc a definite no for work. I do wear nude tights in the summer, but in winter and autumn tend to go for sheer black tights.

So, what is the alternative, because I can't see one!

I see some of the admin staff wearing high heels but they seem to stay in their office or just go to a meeting down the hall and back.

I'm on my feet 8 hrs a day and can no way wear heels.

Our department secretary has now put away her heels since she moved from a ground floor office to our office on the 4th floor with regular trips downstairs!

I find if I wear even a slight heel I find myself avoiding walking - even to the extreme of not going to the loo all day!

There's an article today in the Times with a picture of Monica Belluci wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress & sheer black tights. She's being held up as an example of someone looking good. She's just been cast as a Bond girl. I think one of the problems with MN is that we don't know how old the commentators are or what their style is like, if I was 22 I'd look very different in a suit & sheer tights to someone who was 55. I think of nude fishnets as very 2002 Trinny & Susannah - been there done that. If I'm wearing a knitted dress I'll wear opaques, if I'm wearing something smart I'll wear sheer as opaques can look too heavy & clumsy with a classic court.

i agree Easty.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 17:52

i put mine on at 7 am and walk all day until 6 pm
its a choice innit

In situations like this I always ask 'what would Madonna do?'

Wear what she wanted too and bugger what everyone else thinks!

WillkommenBienvenue · 08/12/2014 18:35

Excellent advice Fairy, I shall use that one next time I slack up on (starting) my fitness routine.

WillkommenBienvenue · 08/12/2014 18:38

Would Madonna say 'let me just check up on the neuro research on video games and children and see if I've had any responses on that AIBU thread before I set off for my run/swim/session'

Too right she bloody wouldn't.

alpacasosoft · 08/12/2014 18:50

I think you only have to look at K Middy to see the frump effect of nude tights and black sheer tights.
She is only in her 30s for gawds sake.
yes I do like her but long to update her tights wardrobe Grin

Bare legs ( she has lovely long legs),black opaques or some black lace for evening.

We will all know if she is reading this thread ,wont we Grin

ihatethecold · 08/12/2014 19:18

On the rare occasion I wear tights I put and extra pair of knickers over them to hold them up.

LoadsaBlusher · 08/12/2014 20:02

just made me laugh out loud ihatethecold Grin
Picturing the superhero pants over tights effect !

Ingenious :)

ihatethecold · 08/12/2014 20:17

Alright, alright!
It's probably about twice a year.
And, I've never had thrush! Grin

Eustasiavye · 08/12/2014 20:32

I always wear nude tights with a sheen when I go out in party dresses in winter.

Doobigetta · 08/12/2014 20:38

Nude tights and shoes for work in summer. MATTE tights, not shiny, and non-platform shoes.
Black opaque tights and black shoes in winter.
For evening outfits that just look wrong with opaques , black fishnets. I'm not 100% convinced that this isn't a bit Trinny & Susannah 2002, but I think it's the least bad option.
I'm 39 and not a frump.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 08/12/2014 21:05

east I'm 29 and a size 6-8. I hope all the people at work aren't hating on my tights as much as MN clearly does Grin

I wear matte nudes in summer/autumn but after a certain point it seems a bit ridiculous - I am inside for most of my job but it's a big site and often have to move between areas going outside and it just feels wrong to have so much seemingly bare flesh out when it is 2 degrees.

Tempted to post a picture of my bottom half for true adjudication but can't be arsed to go and get dressed into work clothes! Grin

I wear sheer/nude tights when appropriate as it looks more professional. I've been 29 & a size 6-8, I'm just not anymore Sad. I bet you look lovely at work & if you're warm you'll have a happier face & better posture. Thanks

Snakesandpropertyladders · 08/12/2014 21:25

Some of the fashion advice on here is very out dated! Sheer black tights are very much in fashion at the moment and opaques are getting a bit dated. Fishnets have not been "in" for a good few years now.
I'm talking about whats in fashion here, not necessarily what looks good.

polyhymnia · 08/12/2014 21:29

Nude tights with a sheen as opposed to mattes are one of my personal dislikes.

HermioneWeasley · 08/12/2014 21:33

Gawd, now I'm assuming that nobody at work is getting anything done, just whispering about my choice of tights behind my back

MrsBertMacklin · 08/12/2014 21:45

Sheer black tights are what the tights fetishists like, so expect them all over this thread once it gets cached by Google.

Anyway, I disagree that they look naff etc. and yes, Daisy Lowe etc. are wearing them so they are coming back.

What I do think, is that they are extremely unforgiving: any lumps or wobbles are highlighted

Also a fan of Wolford's Velvet de Luxe, but I prefer the 66 denier.

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 08/12/2014 21:51

On app so can't post pics, but in the pic of this Oasis dress where it's on a model, she is wearing opaques and it's pretty much a standard look for a dress / heels combo. Same with this dress model pic and this one

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 08/12/2014 21:59

Karen Millen agree.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 08/12/2014 23:17

make me warm that Karen Mullen skirt looks nice with opaques but I'd never wear it to work it is far too casual, my question was really about what tights are suitable and fashionable with business suits.

GreenEyedMonster14 · 09/12/2014 07:29

Okay so from reading this thread I've realised I wear sheer tights. I'm 23 and definitely not frumpy!

I can't believe people actually wear opaques/fishnets! Really?
