Have I been committing fashion faux pas at work?.

Just read the other black tights thread and noticed a lot of hate for black sheer tights. I wear them pretty much every day to work with a grey/black suit. Opaques aren't formal enough and look odd with a suit anyway. Fishnets etc a definite no for work. I do wear nude tights in the summer, but in winter and autumn tend to go for sheer black tights.

So, what is the alternative, because I can't see one!

I think they are due a comeback. You are ahead of the fashion posse :-)

WillkommenBienvenue · 08/12/2014 11:06

Wearing sheer in winter just tells everyone that you don't use public transport.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 11:19

you mean a platform shoe

Bluestocking · 08/12/2014 11:21

Not just any old platform shoe, a giant "nude" platform shoe. Brrrr, shudder.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 11:43

Like the feet of a Pippa doll

Bluestocking · 08/12/2014 11:46

EXACTLY, Noelle!

BikeRunSki · 08/12/2014 11:58

I have adopted 30 denier grey tights as my winter neutral recently. Serms to work with most things, and less severe than black.

Twinklestein · 08/12/2014 12:58

I wear opaques for everyday and nudes a lot but some eveningwear and suits look best with sheer black tights.

It's one of MN's many aberrations, I put it in the same bracket as bare legs in winter, Clark's shoes, Boden, jeans to weddings etc...

Have you ever heard a man complain about sheer black tights?

ARGHtoAHHH · 08/12/2014 13:08

Eh?

What's the difference between opaque and sheer black tights? What am I missing?

I just wear the black tights that my mil buys me from matalan. I have no idea if they are opaque or sheer, they are just black tights. Shit am doing it all wrong ?

While we're on the subject, where can I buy tights that actually stay up? Sick of the gusset down to knees.

I really need to start buying my own tights instead of relying on my nearly-80-year-old-mil.

Petal02 · 08/12/2014 13:47

Opaque black tights are thick, some are almost as thick as leggings. Does that help?

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 08/12/2014 13:57

Opaque means not see-through, it's the literal meaning.

Sheer tights are very 1980s. And not in a cool way, especially with a grey or black skirt suit.

The trick to tights that stay up is buying them at least a size bigger than you think. I always buy Large despite being a size 10. No gusset issues here.

ARGHtoAHHH · 08/12/2014 14:12

Thanks yes that helps. I now know that I wear opaque tights. So I'll keep with them. Just go up a size to avoid saggy gusset Grin

polyhymnia · 08/12/2014 14:51

Twinkle, not sure if you mean liking or not liking Boden or Clark's is a M N aberration?

Amethyst24 · 08/12/2014 15:00

I would describe those Wolford ones in the link as sheer, and think they are totally fine with a suit. What on earth do people mean when they talk about sheer tights?

I also find the insistence on bare legs odd. To me, bare legs in winter look totally inappropriate and ridiculous, unless you're going clubbing in Newcastle.

Twinklestein · 08/12/2014 15:47

I mean liking poly

I agree with Amethyst that the Wolford ones are sheer.

Thegreatweddingdressdilemma · 08/12/2014 16:12

I work in a professional office

If wearing a suit I wear nude tights (never bare legs). In the winter I will put on knee high flat boots and thick socks for the walk to work then change into high heeled shoes in the office.

Alternatively I have a selection of coloured dresses which look good with thick (100 denier) black tights. I add a smart black jacket for meetings

Boomtownsurprise · 08/12/2014 16:16

Have you tried nude fishnet? Can be good alternative

Thegreatweddingdressdilemma · 08/12/2014 16:17

I agree some suits look odd with thick black tights

Thegreatweddingdressdilemma · 08/12/2014 16:18

Oh and I also have 'nude hoof shoes' but not with platform soles like those ones.
I actually think my nude hoof shoes are very flattering with nude tights (clearly not with the thick black ones)

rednsparkley · 08/12/2014 16:27

I blame that there Kate Middleton for the nude shoes obsession - I confess I really dislike them

polyhymnia · 08/12/2014 16:34

Thanks Twinkle. Agree most people on here seem to like Clark's, though I don't. Have even ordered in styles praised here to try but still don't look right to me.

Picture a bit more mixed on Boden surely? Plenty here seem to loathe, while I think they're OK for basics, as long as all 'fun' elements avoided.

Madaboutthrows · 08/12/2014 17:11

If you are happy what does it matter?

WillkommenBienvenue · 08/12/2014 17:18

Do women still wear high heels ALL DAY at work?

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 17:25

clarks flexi sole is your mate

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 17:25

and the Dune ones - SO comfy
