Hey crepeys! The antiques roadshow is in Walthamstow!

Blackduck · 07/12/2014 20:25

MrsS I used to have a fab cheesecake recipe from a polish friend of my dad - pasty bottom too - 'proper cheese cake' cooked - not that american stuff.

MC I am okay(ish) - have agreed one day wfh until christmas at least and that has helped as I feel somewhat more in control than I did - situ at work is still pretty dire and will be until a meeting on 16th when hopefully lines will be drawn. Thanks for thinking of me :)

Stropps sorry to hear you have the friend issue to sort.
Re friends - it's the sink/radiator thing isn't it? We are all both at different points but if someone is permanently a sink then it's not always easy to deal with....

BD, glad to see you are struggling onSmile

Have had quite a family Sunday night - after decorating the tree and putting out the Nativity, etc, the DC have been playing with soft toys! DD is doing an art project which involves turning them inside out and restuffing them... DS is not wanting to part with George (his Lion) and a Winnie the Pooh I found in the charity shop, despite still having his huge Winnie in his bed every nightGrin

I am looking at flights/hotels for NYC next October - Madison Square Garden is central, right?

It's just me and DD (unless my BFF and DD can come)
I think the Tryp hotel was one of the possibles!

motherinferior · 07/12/2014 21:38

Next October?? Impressed!

My mum is not too bad. She has a spiffy new wig - I hadn't known she'd lost her hair but wasn't surprised, it always happens with this particular drug - and is incredibly thin, but was in goodish spirits and they are doing their best to get out and have a nice time on good days. Last round of chemo starts on Thurs and another scan soon. I will go to the meeting about the results, which I absolutely dread, of course...

cremolafoam · 07/12/2014 21:40

I am done. I have completely lost my voice. 14 shows done,
1 lost toddler was the only major incident we had. My heart completely stopped for 20 minutes until we found him( in the giant Xmas tree bucket 'hiding from Santa') there were 3000 men women and children in the building at that moment. I still haven't recovered .

Tonight- flat out, chicken soup ( mit noodlen mrs s- Hungarian / Slovak heritage)Wink Strictly, jammies.

cremolafoam · 07/12/2014 21:41

Oh MISad

CointreauVersial · 07/12/2014 21:42

Lucky you, BTM. I haven't been to NYC since I was up the duff with DS (it was indeed our last decent holiday). The photos of that trip make me laugh, because DH got so sunburned in California a few days earlier ("here's a tomato by the Empire State Building; here's a tomato on the Staten Island Ferry... "). Grin

I have been very lazy today, and spent a long time on the sofa. We have however chosen the paint for the bathroom (Dulux Mint Macaroon), and should be able to get some paint on tomorrow. Counting the days until Wednesday when the plumber comes back.....

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/12/2014 21:45

Rose - Gewickelte, no, but I think I know what it is - it is a sort of coiled sponge cake, like a swiss roll, but with the rolly bit upmost, instead of at the end. Is that it?

My cheesecake is cooked quite quickly, on a highish heat, instead of for ages, on a low heat like American or Polish cheesecakes. This means that the sugar caramelises a bit, and the top goes golden. It has the appealling name of sajt torta (pronounced "shite torta" Grin). We had some friends round for dinner once and they ate most of it between them (and I gave them the rest to take home). I will have a think about what goes in it (quantity wise) and write it down next time I make one, so that you can make it too, NU. Smile

bigTillyMint · 07/12/2014 21:50

I am looking now because apparently you get better deals as early as poss?

Am Confused as ex messaged me on Sat night and again just now. He is not a FB friend and I don't want him as a friend on FB or in RL. I have not replied to any of his messages (first one was after the last meet up in MrsS's place) Very odd.Confused

NUFC69 · 07/12/2014 22:03

Thanks, MrsS, I would appreciate that. (I was actually hoping that I would get you as a SS because I know that you like cooking and there are all sorts of interesting things in the cook shops).

BTM, we usually get our flight tickets in January for our September US holidays for that very reason. Although having said that they were offering flights from Newcastle direct to New York for about £350 this week to travel now.

MI, your DM sounds as if she is coping reasonably well atm. Is your DDad any better now?

motherinferior · 08/12/2014 08:11

He seems to be less mournful, but I doubt he will cope any better with any setbacks. All the friends/rellies in India said they were a bit errr concerned about his inability to cope/support my mum.

motherinferior · 08/12/2014 09:20

In other news, the CDiff publisher (not the client) has sent me a HUGE box from Johnny Loulou's for Christmas. Have glimpsed crackers and other lovely things lurking therein. I think the publisher does realise that I do a decent job either that or she is trying to bribe me to stay-

hattymattie · 08/12/2014 09:29

MI - your Mum sounds like a trooper. Who knows your DF may rise to the occasion - if only to prove everybody wrong.

BTM - I would ignore ex - I know a numberof people who've opened a can of worms by friending ex's.

V excited by DD1's imminent return this afternoon. She sent me a snap of her on Oxford Street yesterday she seems to have purchased a rather glam Cossack style hat.

Rosebag · 08/12/2014 09:43

That cheese cake sounds the business, MrsS. Yes, I think Gewikelte means something like ' roly poly' doesn't it ? Ours is made with shortcrust pastry rather than sponge and seems a bit like a strudel. It's filled with jam and sultanas and then rolled as you describe. Yum.
MI your DM sounds remarkable. Is one of her chemo drugs called cyclophosphamide? That's the toxic ( but effective ) bastard that is usually responsible for hair loss, I think. I still have my wig...
tilly I think there's a way to block even non friend messages on fb. Not sure how though. I have a couple of ex boyfriends on my fb friends but not exH.
rudy we almost always have two bathrooms with adjoining rooms on holiday, if we can run to it. One for me, and the other for DCs and DH Grin Grin
Sounds like a plan BD good luck with it.
Right class about to start. Laters crepeys x

NUFC69 · 08/12/2014 09:58

Hatty, I always wanted a Cossack hat when I was young and was never brave enough to wear one - good on Dd for taking the plunge. (Now, of course, although I am brave enough I am too old Sad ). I did wear a baker's boy type hat in the 70s when they were fashionable. Enjoy your anticipation.

Glorious sunshine here and I have to go to the dentist for the second of my appointments - and it's the dental hospital on Wednesday. DSis and I agreed yesterday that the answer to pre Christmas stress was to do all present buying, cake making, card writing, etc, in November so we could enjoy ourselves in December - I don't think that dental appointments were quite what we had in mjnd!

BTM, contact from ex boyfriends/partners not a good idea - block him.

motherinferior · 08/12/2014 10:20

I'm friends with quite a few exes....

NUFC69 · 08/12/2014 10:28

Well that's fine, MI, but BTM is obviously uneasy about it. I think that possibly it's the unexpectedness of the contact. If the parting of the ways was amicable - fine.

Dentist has just rung to cancel my appointment as the bits haven't come from the technicians - Christmas shopping is now on the agenda.

motherinferior · 08/12/2014 10:50

Oh yes, NU, I do take your point. And in my case it's more that I'm nosy. Often about the ones who broke my heart. This is not necessarily a Good Thing....

bigTillyMint · 08/12/2014 10:55

I am nosey too, hence why I haven't blocked him yet! I was a bit shook after the very first message but not so now. Just a bit surprised after about 19 years, though not really that surprising as he didn't want to split up at all.

Gorgeous weather here too, and we're off on a trip!

Rosebag · 08/12/2014 11:03

I can do nosey. I get quite a kick out of seeing the fb photos of exes...balding and with a paunch. Not that I'm an oil painting in my old age, but....
But I also agree people need to be careful. A few years ago I got in touch with an old school friend (male) via fb who had not been a beau in any shape or form, just a class mate. He didn't tell his wife we were in touch for ages because they'd had friends who had reunited via fb and had an affair etc etc and she was very suspicious of it all. I thought it was funny at the time but I can see why it freaks people out!

MontserratCaballe · 08/12/2014 12:37

We are a house of ill. Poor DS has a cough, raging temp and is very sorry for himself. Hope he is well enough for school tomorrow but I suspect he won't be. I will have to take a day unpaid as I have run out of holiday. Dh has said he is far too important busy for a day off. That's me told, then

NU, sorry to hear about your dental woes. I hate the dentist, not least because it's so £££. Still, needs must. What at you having done? Hope not too gruesome or costly.

MI, glad your ma is in as good nick as possible in the circumstances. Have sent you a pm.

Loving hearing about the children coming back from uni. The Christmas break is usually a long one, too. When does Dd go back, hatty? And how is it going with the boyfriend in Netherlands ?
