According to the Times supplement on Saturday, skinnies are now over; boyfriend jeans are the in thing.

clawhands :)

Apparently they do nothing for me - quote/unquote! I had a pair a few years ago and just wore them when I was feeling all miserable and on my period. I am loving my flares though!

ouryve · 07/11/2014 11:03

And I most certainly wasn't resistant to the return of skinnies. I was a teen in the 80s and was glad to get back to trousers and jeans that I didn't constantly trip over. The simultaneous return to jeans that came up higher than the top of one's arse crack was an added bonus.

EasyToEatTiger · 07/11/2014 11:29

I think skinny jeans are awful. Luckily we can't see what's behind us. Boyfriend jeans just mean anything that needs a belt because it doesn't fit.

MaryWestmacott · 07/11/2014 11:29

the real problem is we have got used to wearing tight bottom half with a longer, looser top half. You can't wear culottes or boyfriend jeans with a baggy top that covers your bum, you'll look fat, it only works with tight fitting to the waist top half clothes, and in most of those boyfriend jeans photos, heels.

It's not just the jeans that have to change, if you're going for boyfriend/Mom jeans, all those tunic tops and loose fitting jumpers have to be put away too.

Dress for the body you have - not the body wish you had!

Gwen looks a tuttle in Ginny's link

Skinnies have been 'out of fashion' for well over a year now. But who cares? If a style suits you, wear it.

I am more concerned with the fact that everybody is bloody wearing Adidas Gazelles :(. I look like one of the herd now despite their being my go to trainer for over a decade. I hate it when a classic becomes a fashion item simply because herds of people go and buy it because a fashion editor says so.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 07/11/2014 11:41

I love boyfriends but they need an exposed ankle. So they'll come back in the summer in my house and not before.

alpacasosoft · 07/11/2014 11:45

They only look good if you have no bum ie Vicky B types.
They look like frumpy mum jeans on those of us blessed in the buttock dept.

alpacasosoft · 07/11/2014 11:47

"Culottes can fuck right off "
So true !

UriGeller · 07/11/2014 11:52

Skinnies have always been around. They were called other things like 'drainpipes' and 'skintights'. I had a beautiful pair of really stretch skintights in the 80s. Sky blue they were (and a size 6). I wore them with mocassins and an oversized white tshirt like George Michael

GarlicNovember · 07/11/2014 11:54

I never have liked skinnies Grin Mebbe I'm too old or summat, but they make people look like they have sticks for legs and huge feet! Slim legs, straight legs and cigarette legs work better for those seeking a slender look, imo.

I hate the term boyfriend jeans - they mean traditional cut jeans, don't they? As with any jeans, it's all in the cut. Most jeans make most women look a bit baggy; if that's not what you wanted, you have to search for the ones cut to suit you

GarlicNovember · 07/11/2014 11:58

That said, I live in leggings ... which is no better, except you don't get that weird gathering round the ankle.

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 07/11/2014 12:01

Yes I had Levis drainpipes bought in the US and back in 1977 I thought I was it. I wore them with Tukka boots, a holey mohair sweater in pink and grey and sometimes rang the changes with dusky pink cord drainpipes. My mother hated them so much she cut them up and I never (still have not) forgave her. She smashed my crimping irons too.

GarlicNovember · 07/11/2014 12:02

Blimey, Annie Shock A tiny bit controlling, was she?! Guess she didn't like the pre-punk look!

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 07/11/2014 12:05

Garlic

She was utterly vile (Know that sounds awful about your own mother but she was) and wanted my siblings and I to all dress the same.

GarlicNovember · 07/11/2014 12:20

No, some mothers are! We should condemn them all to wear ridiculous clothes for the rest of their lives Wink

noddyholder · 07/11/2014 12:26

Lilannie I could have written that!

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 07/11/2014 12:52

Noddy - my commiserations. I am still damaged from the matching cord pinafore and polyester peter pan coloured blouses- we had one in every bloody colour. And let's not forget the Purdey socipathic hair cut.

MyGhostIsFlummoxed · 07/11/2014 12:53

Just as I'm finally getting the legs for skinnies Hmm

noddyholder · 07/11/2014 12:56

My mother cut one leg off a pair of jeans I bought from my 1st ever earnings I didn't think I would ever 'met' anyone else who had had that sort of parent. I think I had a cord pinafore too lol

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 07/11/2014 13:39

What MaryWestacott said about boyfriend jeans requiring a wardrobe overhaul, if you have been wearing skinnies.

I'm getting too old and contrary to completely adopt and abandon things as they are deemed to be fashionable. I'd rather stick with what suits me and what I like. Which means no boyfriends or culottes for me.

Dinglethdragon · 07/11/2014 13:44

luckily I never read anything fashion related - and on the plus side lots of decent pairs of skinnys might be making their way to the charity shops Grin

Rosa · 07/11/2014 13:46

I wore a uniform that had culottes in it . I wore them once they were lined and felt like I had a nappy on . The most horrible things I have ever worn. Than heavens we also had a skirt option.
