Am I too old for this 'look'?

I know I should wear what the hell I like but I have a real fear of looking like mutton dressed as lamb. Ive seen a dress I like for day time, its just above the knee, black with tiny white flowers not very fitted apart from at the waist. If I wear it with a long black cardi, opaques and ankle boots will I look like a twat? I'm 47 but not ready for the twin set and pearls just yet.

Sounds lovely, if you like it and are comfortable wearing it - buy it!

LuckySaint · 25/10/2014 11:26

Don't be silly, buy the dress.

WilburIsSomePig · 25/10/2014 11:28

Didn't take much convincing have just ordered it. If I look like a nob I'm blaming you two. Halloween Grin

Good for you, let us know how lovely it is when it arrives. Smile

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 25/10/2014 12:58

Sounds really nice but for (well for me anyway) the ankle boots.
A shorter cardi may look better with the fitted waist, and aren't all granny style now.

WilburIsSomePig · 25/10/2014 13:02

I did wonder about the boots too, I was wondering about getting some Fly wedge shoes, d'you think they would look OK? Not sure about the sizing though cos I'm a half size.

go for it. I'm the same age. sounds great

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 25/10/2014 13:09

Sorry to out a downer on it again but fly wedge shoes are (ok, once again, IMO) hideous. They wouldn't match a nice dress. There are still nice shoe boots out there, once again, that's just my taste.

Twinklestein · 25/10/2014 13:12

I agree Fly wedges are vile. The dress sounds nice though...

WilburIsSomePig · 25/10/2014 13:13

I haven't seen them in the flesh so this is useful to me! I'm a TA so need really comfy shoes or I feel like sobbing by lunchtime. I'm 5'2 so need a bit of height bit not too high either.

Have a google for Gabor Haven in black then. Magically comfy wedge with small platform for a bit of height.

magicpixie · 25/10/2014 13:28

link please

sounds nnice

and you are not old

specialsubject · 25/10/2014 13:28

wow, I'm a couple of years older. Is twinset and pearls compulsory now?

dress for comfort, appropriateness and figure. Forget age.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 25/10/2014 13:30

Wow. The Gabor Trudy ankle boots are lovely. And they would go really well with a dress. I like the Emilia ones as well but I'd wear them with trousers. gets debit card ready

VoyagerII · 25/10/2014 13:33

Fly make loads of shoes, some are ugly some not. I have a few which I love including some ankle boots. They can be an alternative, funky look that looks great on some people. Some people hate them but don't be put off if there are some you really like. I think Gabor are frumpier than Fly!

I think your dress & outfit sounds great, as long as you love it and feel "right", it will work IMO. I don't like the phrase mutton dressed as lamb, but I think if a woman does look like her clothes don't suit her, it's usually because she doesn't really feel comfortable (I mean emotionally not just physically).

Floisme · 25/10/2014 15:21

Fly aren't to everyone's taste but I think they can be a good counterpoint (if that's the right word) to a flowery dress. I'm glad you got over your age wobble - older women are just as entitled to wear nice clothes as anyone else.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/10/2014 15:39

I'd wear a dress like that with opaques, ankle boots and a biker jacket. Am 44.

MrsGromit · 25/10/2014 16:49

Can we have a link for the dress please?

TwoInTheMourning · 25/10/2014 17:39

See I think that Fly wedges are lovely. These for example:

goingmadinthecountry · 25/10/2014 21:26

Please no to the shoes. Unless you have foot problems, why wear old lady shoes? Dress/cardi etc sounds absolutely fine - I'm 50 and would wear similar to work. But not with teacher shoes. I'm allowed to say that because I'm a teacher.

Coumarin · 26/10/2014 00:25

Oh god sorry but those shoes are hideous.

Flat ankle boots will look perfect with a dress and opaques.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 26/10/2014 01:00

Oh two I know everybody has different taste, and it'd be bloody boring if not, but oh dear god, they're ugly. I can't even see the quirky factor. Just ugly.

wtffgs · 26/10/2014 05:35

Your outfit sounds lovely. Please wear what you want. I am 47 and a TA too. Comfort, style and layers are essential. Oh and flat shoes Smile

TwoInTheMourning · 26/10/2014 07:42

No probs. I admit I wear what most people consider ugly shoes. I look awful in flats because I'm short but I can't wear heals because my feet hurt! Also, heels look too dressy in my opinion, so if I want the height (around 6cm) but still be casual (ish) and comfortable, it's got to be wedges. I think I am destined to wearing ugly shoes forever.

HexBramble · 26/10/2014 08:31

Sounds lovely, just what I like.
I don't like ankle boots though, not for dresses. Love wedged flats - saw some lovely ones in schuh for work but can't remember what. Will have to go back on.

Do you have a link for your dress? Sounds gorgeous.
