Cyprus?! Is he a Greek or Turkish Cypriot?!

beachyhead · 26/10/2014 20:30

He's not saying!

I think he was in Nicosia being fostered, but originally I think he went to the big rescue pound which is in the 'bumper zone' Mrs S will know the diplomatic answer! He's been through a lot in the last 18 months, so hoping he can just chill and relax now he's here....

herbaceous · 26/10/2014 21:04

Had lovely lazy day here too. Managed to stir ourselves to go to wanstead park, where we built a den in the woods. After moaning that 'nature is boring' we had to drag DS away from his stick creation after an hour.

It's an amazing place, once the site of one of England's finest Palladian stately 'omes, similar in splendour to Blenheim palace or castle Howard, but demolished and sold for just it's building materials after the rogue the heiress married gambled it all away. You can still see traces of the avenues of trees, grottos, etc. I've been trawling geeky websites about it all afternoon.

bigTillyMint · 26/10/2014 21:30

Who'd have thought it Herbs?

Arrived at DMs. She is officially ancient - she has an opened tin of strawberries in syrup and evap milk in her fridge.

CointreauVersial · 26/10/2014 22:16

Nowt wrong with evaporated milk, BTM.

cremolafoam · 26/10/2014 22:17

Oh I love Dylan. He's a hansome boy. Clever eyes.
You lucky things. ( both Beachy and Woofer)Smile

lalsy · 26/10/2014 22:49

Oooh Dylan is gorgeous. And looks very wise.

We've had dd back for the weekend which was absolutely lovely and rather odd.

Good luck with the visit BTM and hats off to you MI.

CointreauVersial · 26/10/2014 23:09

I just logged on to the mobile MN just to see the pic of Beachyhound - awww....he's absolutely lovely. What soulful eyes.

Tinned fruit and evap is a very 1970s pudding, I think. If you were lucky it was fruit cocktail, if you were unlucky, tinned peaches (why were they always called "cling" peaches?) or apricots. Or worst of all, pears.

My mother has a jar of marmalade in her fridge with a best before date of December 1990. That's when you're officially ancient, when best before dates are something to be ignored.

NUFC69 · 27/10/2014 06:14

I can only see photos when I am on the laptop - when I am on the phone I can't, so I will have to wait until I get up to see Dylan. I love the name, Beachy.

I am glad to hear that common sense has prevailed, CV.

I used to love it when DC came back from uni, Lalsy, but it left me strangely unsettled.

I used to love tinned fruit and evaporated milk, but we were exotic and put the fruit in jelly! Grin My DM died in 1972, I sometimes wonder what she would make of our lives and the things we have and use.

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2014 08:14

Yes, pears were the worst. But I have never liked evap, and DM didn't in the 70's. Maybe it's something you develop a liking for when you get really old?

Lalsy, how lovely - she must love you lots (or have loads of washing!) I didn't go home till everyone else did at Christmas!

DM is considering whether she needs an assessment of her needs in her home (finding it hard to get up and down stairs amongst other things) - not sure how I go about organising it. If it even exists.

motherinferior · 27/10/2014 08:20

I have been known to give my children tinned peaches, in desperate attempt to get fruit into them.

DP is back. Has loaded the washing-machine and bogged off to work (he got in after midnight and must be exhausted). I must wrangle with CDiff and interview palliative nurses who work with children. I find this rather emotionally difficult, which makes me feel a bit of a wimp as they're clearly very lovely people and get a lot out of their work.

motherinferior · 27/10/2014 08:21

BTM, think it would be adult social services in her area. Ring Age UK or Counsel and Care, they'll tell you.

Rosebag · 27/10/2014 08:39

I've noticed that there elderly seem to develop a preference for sweet things…I think there's some research behind it, but don't know what. Nothing wrong with tinned fruit….although maybe not in syrup!!!! Yep, Tilly social services, and they send OT's to do assessments, I think. Although my parents have done well with the combination of social services (referral that I made) plus being plugged in to all manner of services via the Consultant in Geriatric medicine. It's good that your DM has come to think of this herself, though isn't it? I had to come on a bit strong with mine.
DD and I are off to the coast for a few days. DS doesn't have half term, so he's staying here with DH supposedly keeping an eye.
Anyone who knows Sussex, (Beachy ??) What's the shopping like in Horsham?

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2014 08:39

Thats great MI - thanks!

Blackduck · 27/10/2014 08:57

Here my dad has had to take on more. Mum has been assessed and various practical things put in place.
They were mega impressed by mums washing up bowl (I bought it) and took copious notes to pass on to the office (it has a plug in the bottom so you don't have to up end it to empty it....

Mum is very very frail and looks every year of her age.

Hampton Court today - and looking like a lovely one.

motherinferior · 27/10/2014 10:17

DD2 out with friends (she spent most of yesterday with them too); DD1 loafing about in her PJs. Am pleased for DD2, who isn't always great at organising her social life.

beachyhead · 27/10/2014 10:29

Not sure about Horsham. I haven't been there for years. It should be good though, as so much new housing round there. It won't be as good or as interesting as Brighton, I wouldn't have thought, but let me know if you do venture Smile

We are doing jobs here and taking newddog out for a fly! It's a bit like waterskiing walking him Smile

motherinferior · 27/10/2014 11:30

BIL lives there. It's also where the RSPCA is based. I can ask BIL but in all honesty he's not a great one for shops.

cremolafoam · 27/10/2014 11:36

Lalsy, I hear you absolutely on the unsettling Return Of The Student.
We skyped with dd yesterday and she seems to have regenerated into A Militant. She's very mouthy and strident and has dyed her hair green.
And is speaking with a Scottish accent to boot. I feel I hardly know this new person.
Underneath it all I know dd is in there somewhere and privately still feel anxious about her mental health.
Parenting at a distance is very hard.
But I suppose all of this is natural...

Ddad is still in hospital and will see the Consultant today.

We were woken by an almighty crash at 4 am. All our lovely shelves in the living room collapsed ( after suspect A -cremolacat launched herself at them) bringing dh's record collection, turntable, 100 large books, a glass decanter tumbling to the floor)
Had to get up and tidy it and deal with dh swearing about it. Not Good.Sad

motherinferior · 27/10/2014 12:02

Don't talk about cats

Love the Beachyhound.

cremolafoam · 27/10/2014 12:15

Bloody cats
I also want a Cremoladog.
Envy

CointreauVersial · 27/10/2014 13:26

Oh no, Crem - what a disaster. Not something you want to hear in the middle of the night.

Rose - I used to go to Horsham a lot. We lived about 8 miles away, and it became the "popular choice" for a day out after they built a massive landscaped playground and a cool swimming pool (has one of those outdoor sections that sweeps you round with a current).

Shops aren't bad - it is a naice town - but not as extensive as Brighton. A small shopping centre and a couple of pedestrian streets. All the usual High Street stuff, and a great cheese shop too.

Keep your eyes on the pavement - weirdly, whenever we go to Horsham we always find something on the ground - two mobile phones and a silver Tiffany bracelet to date. Confused

DD1 is 'rearranging her room'. Apparently her room is horrible (it's a lovely front bedroom, we slept in it for years), she never asked for it (this is totally true, DP moved her one afternoon into it so I could swap back into my office room after I'd stomped out weeping that I WORKED IN A JUNK ROOM - but as a bedroom it IS lovely), her sister shouldn't be forced to swap with her and hates it too (first thing I knew about it) and IT'S NOT FAIR.
