Why does my mascara run?

DowntonFlabbey · 05/10/2014 17:48

Now I'm not sure if it's my mascara or eyeliner, but within an hour of applying makeup, I get horrific black rings under my eyes that need wiping. It looks as though I have been crying!

I've tried all the different makeup products, expensive or cheap, they all run.

I'm starting to think its not the makeup, but my skin. Could I have oily eyes?(sounds stupid I know).

I've stopped using mascara and eyeliner, which is a shame.

Any ideas?

Your eyes could be watering, or you could have oily lids. I have this, and find most makeup stays better on my eyes with a primer. Lots of people rave about the Urban Decay lid primer, but I use one from ELF which is far cheaper. If you Google you'll probably find recommendations for other budget brands that are good.

DowntonFlabbey · 05/10/2014 17:56

Ah thanks Fubsy. Will try a lid primer and see.

My mascara runs too. It's very annoying. I have worked out after a while that it runs more when I'm wearing foundation, so it's clinging to that. But I have quite dry eyes and I think I probably blink a lot. I'm just resigned to having a little wipe every time I go to the loo Grin

DowntonFlabbey · 05/10/2014 18:30

So I've checked out the primers, they're mainly to keep eyeshadow in place. On the hunt for one that goes underneath the eyes to prevent panda effect. Wonder if it's the eyeliner that runs, or mascara. Or both?

Try a long lasting eye liner-Estee Lauder for the pricey option, no 7 high street choice and Wilkos for super cheap but amazing and works really well. Plus try water proof mascara.

Lozislovely · 05/10/2014 19:00

Clinique Lash Power is the only mascara I've found not to do this. The only time I've found it running is when I used Benefit fake up, which is a fab concealer but whatever is in it draws the mascara like a magnet!

Twinklestein · 05/10/2014 19:08

I recently did a thread on this because it's just started happening.

I think my eyes are watering more, but someone also suggested that it could be because I use moisturiser & primer before foundation and mascara.

I've just bought some waterproof mascara & will report back if it makes a difference.

dragonflyinthelillies · 05/10/2014 19:10

I'm the same... Think its a mixture of oily skin and long eyelashes! and the only thing I've found that works is Estee Lauder smudge proof mascara. It is pricey but it does the job :)

Justalittlebitfedup · 05/10/2014 19:14

The only mascara that has never run on me is the Clinique lash power, it's a tube mascara and is amazing Smile never tried any other tubing mascaras but I need to as the clinique one is pricey.

Never found a kohl eyeliner that doesn't budge though Confused

Twinklestein · 05/10/2014 19:25

I don't have oily skin, so the OP may not either.

It might be worth avoiding eyelashes when using moisturiser or primer prior to applying makeup.

bikermouse1 · 05/10/2014 19:54

Ahh, I'd replied to this earlier but see it didn't post.

Well then, my first post ever on mn was here, and for precisely the same reason. And that's how I learned about tubing mascaras. Abso-bloody-lutely fantastico! I've worn it at funerals! I've worn it when I've laughed til I've cried. I've worn it when oiled and sweaty on a beach.

And I've never, ever had panda eyes! Magic, sheer magic!

At the moment I've got the cheapo no.7 Stay Perfect Long Lasting volume stuff, brown/black. Gold tube

Comes off really easily just with water on a pad. No puffy eyes, either..

Please give it a go.

And FlowersWineandCaketo everyone who told me about it.

treaclesoda · 05/10/2014 20:00

I have found a non smudging mascara. And it's cheap as can be. Boots Natural Collection waterproof. The only mascara I have ever tried that doesn't give me smudgy under eyes.

Fubsy · 05/10/2014 21:33

I don't have particularly oily skin, but I do have oily lids. But I'm sure I read somewhere that some people have thicker more oily tears. I get the dry eye thing sometimes where I need to blink a lot, and I'm sure I get a bit of "leakage" which doesn't help mascara stay on!

I'm experimenting with a Maybelline eyeliner which seems to be a dupe for Benefit Push-up liner. It seems pretty budge proof.

One day I will master applying it without looking like I've gone mad with a white board marker!

coffeenut · 06/10/2014 02:56

Estee Lauder double wear eyeliner. Only one that doesn't budge on me.

Maybelline and Dior mascaras

Kittykat7 · 06/10/2014 06:46

You could try a waterproof overcoat over mascara. Clarins do one. Lots of mascaras smudge on me even the Clinique Lash power & Estée Lauder zero smudge. I'm going to try Bobbie Brown Long wear next & Christian Dior Iconic curl.

DowntonFlabbey · 06/10/2014 06:50

Ooh lots of suggestions. I'll start by trying out eye primer and new mascara. Experiment time....

I used to get black smudges under my eyes until I changed to Estée Lauder- double wear mascara. It's excellent

Deathraystare · 06/10/2014 08:21

Oh and make sure you get a waterproof as opposed to water resistant mascara. There is a difference. I have trouble reading labels now the print is so small. My otherwise perfect Max Factor mascara is bloody water resistant and runs like a bugger. Bastard. But then I do have very watery eyes.

MrsDavidBowie · 06/10/2014 08:27

Watery eyes are hellish. Mine are getting worse.
Bobbi brown waterproof mascara is good.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 06/10/2014 08:44

I love my, I was about to ask this too! I've tried every waterproof mascara I can find and all give me panda eyes. I stopped wearing any mascara on my bottom lashes but that made no difference Sad. I tried Blinc tubing mascara years ago, when it first came out, but I just ended up with little spider legs across my face. I'll try the no7 one, after Bikermouse's rave review! thanks

Purplecircle · 06/10/2014 08:47

I used to have this. Panda eyes within an hour of applying. I tried tons of different ones.
The one that works for me is Estée Lauder double wear zero smudge, I daren't try anything else now

avocadogreen · 06/10/2014 09:22

I used to have the same problem, even with waterproof mascara... I think it's because I wear contact lenses and probably rub my eyes without realising. I discoverwd Clinique lash power following a recommendation on here, it's fantastic! I also got a free sample of the Clinique high impact curling mascara recently, which gives a better effect and lasts pretty well fpr a night out.

Still on the lookout for an eyeliner that doesn't smudge but is still quite subtle/natural looking though! Any kimd of gel pen type thing just looks like felt tip on my eyes...

Twinklestein · 06/10/2014 10:11

Kittykat7

I've done Christian Dior Iconic and Extase, no joy. Nor YSL - actually that was the worst. Nor Hypnose which is my favourite.

Am trying Hypnose waterproof now. Will try the Estée Lauder.

Kittykat7 · 06/10/2014 12:56

That's a shame I was hoping the Iconic curl would nd good. I'll let you know how the Bobbie Brown long wear mascara goes. I've tried so many too. Expensive & cheap ones still smudge on me. I'm currently using Lancome Definicils with Cils booster. It's ok not much smudging but it's just not the same as it used to be years ago.

CrazyLadyAtNumber31 · 06/10/2014 13:54

I found the only thing that worked for me was changing my cleanser!!?? I was using an oil based one (either Lancome or Estee Lauder eye make-up remover / take the day off or something) with cotton wool at night to remove make-up, then next morning after a splash with cold water, applying my moisturiser and makeup. The eye liner and/or mascara just slid off after a couple of hours because there must had still been a residue of the cleanser on my lashes?? As soon as I stopped using the cleanser, no more panda eyes. Honestly I tried so, so, so many mascaras and eyeliners and this was the only thing that worked.
