Knee high boots. Hideous or not?

It's been years since I've worn a pair - probably several decades ago when I was 20.

Anyway, I've been mainly wearing skinnies lately and suddenly thought ... Hmmm.

I saw a pair in sainsburys of all places. Very plain, black, all leather and currently 40 quid taking into account their current promotion. Tried them on as was wearing black skinny jeans and thought they looked quite nice. Quality was surprising - easily as good as ones over double the price

But I'm torn. I hate the look of the knee high boot with a skirt and I hate them when they are in any colour but black.

Okay, am I living in a parallel universe?

People are worrying about knee high boots making them look frumpy on what planet :

but are more than happy (judging by a recent thread) to buy and scuttle along OL style, in public, with one of these:

Knee high boots with jeans or skirts and opaques are fabulous!!!

pinkhousesarebest · 24/09/2014 21:02

Marymcb Try these www.valverdebotas.com/es/botas-de/163-bota-kate-cuero-engrasado.html. I have bought several pairs from here. Great service and very similar boots byt huge difference in price.

MaryWestmacott · 24/09/2014 21:23

OP - you do need to be careful with black knee high boots and jeans look, because if you are not careful, you can look a bit like you are channelling Himler...

I like them with skirts, they are apparently in this year with short skirts and thick tights and they will keep your legs a lot warmer...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/09/2014 21:25

I'm not overly fond of black ones, especially with jeans. Find brown ones far easier to wear.

tethersend · 24/09/2014 21:42

Channelling Himmler Grin

I love them. Have just bought a great tan suede pair.

TheHoundsBitch · 24/09/2014 21:47

Those spanish riding boots are beautiful... Are there any dupes for under £50 do you reckon?

burnishedsilver · 24/09/2014 22:25

I misunderstood. I thought we were talking about over the knee boots. Below the knee boots are a wardrobe staple. They lost ground to the ankle boot last year but, according to the magazines kindly provided by my hairdresser, they are back this year.

niceupthedance · 25/09/2014 07:02

I'm in the seriously gone off them camp. Bit 90s in a bad way... Sorry!

Wiggyswardrobe · 25/09/2014 10:28

I like flat riding/biker boot knee high type things. Not heels though..

kaykayblue · 25/09/2014 11:17

I'm not a huge fan of them to be honest. I think the tight jeans with knee boots over the top is really dated. Especially if you wear them with a shirt and a gilet over the top. Urgh!

With jeans, I much, much prefer ankle boots which are quite wide at the top to balance out the width of the thigh.

I do own a couple of pairs of knee highs - both are suede, so about as useful as a chocolate kettle in winter anyway, one are flat and one have a slight heel.

I realise now that I am really not keen on the colour of the flat pair (a sort of grey dark green), and I struggle to wear the beige suede ones without feeling like a prostitute. Not sure why.

Overall, I quite like very plain, flat knee high boots when worn with shorts, thick opaque tights and a big cozy jumper. I think browns look much less formal than black.

ageingdisgracefully · 25/09/2014 11:22

I like them, but they give me pudgy knees. That's if I can get them up my legs at all. I go mid-calf. Ankle boots cut me off in the wrong place too.

ThatBloodyWoman · 25/09/2014 11:22

I love knee highs.
I have about half a dozen pairs.
Wear with skirts, jumper dresses, leggings, everything and anything really!

Yardley · 25/09/2014 11:23

Ive just bought a tan suede pair of knee high boots, from Topshop.Kind of seventies vibe with a block heel.I love them. But Ive got nothing to wear with them at all...should send them back really. But I really like them.....

thenightsky · 25/09/2014 11:31

Yardley have you got a link to your tan suede ones? I'm after a pair to go with a 70s style skirt.

VillaVillekulla · 25/09/2014 11:33

Well I've just bought some and I love them. I know what people mean about looking a bit dated since it's all been about ankle boots for a few years. But then a few years ago we were all Shock at ankle boots and going on about how they all looked like "mum boots".

I'm going to try to channel the 70s vibe with mine. They've got a block heel and I'm going to wear them with fuller skirts or jumper dresses. I've also got black flat knee high boots which I've worn to death and which still get lots of compliments. I wear them with short skirts and opaque tights. I've also got some very functional, waterproof, rugged knee high boots which I wear with thick tights and jumper dresses on wet weekends. Oh, and I've got some slightly bikerish Hudson calf length boots....maybe I have too many boots now I come to think of it Blush

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/09/2014 12:14

According to all the glossies they're back in a big way.

carrie74 · 25/09/2014 12:36

Isn't it (as always) a question of how you wear them rather than the item per se?

Acne Pistols wouldn't do anything for school run mum wearing too short boot cuts and a fleece...

Yardley · 25/09/2014 13:30

thenightsky-I can't get the link to work-Topshop online caccoon boots-£95....

AnnoyingOrange · 25/09/2014 13:38

Acne pistols look like typical mum boots to me

I have some similar ones from m and s Grin

Oly4 · 25/09/2014 14:24

I agree about Acne Pistols...just boring mum boots?!

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/09/2014 14:42

Oh I love my pistols but know some people on here love to call them mum boots Wink

SofaCanary · 25/09/2014 14:43

Didn't realise knee highs were so contentious.

Agree about the Acne Pistols too!

leedy · 25/09/2014 14:56

But my Pistols are coooooooooomfy. Plus the leather is really nice. Don't care if they're mum boots...

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/09/2014 15:04

They're not mum boots. Some people just don't appreciate the subtle design details that differentiate them from m&s footglove Wink
