Rosebag, was browsing today and came across this dress

I agree and don't think it is about direct speech at all. Blah blah blah is a terrible example. "A sentence containing a quotation is punctuated exactly like any other sentence apart from the addition of the quotation marks" says the University of Sussex www.sussex.ac.uk/informatics/punctuation/quotes/marks. The Economist agrees www.economist.com/style-guide/inverted-commas-quotation-marks. So you have to have something sensible inside the quotes to decide whether or not it would normally have punctuation. The teacher cannot have understood to have picked an example like that, I don't think as you could argue till the cows come home about how blah blah blah is punctuated with or without quotes. Erm, sorry, I seem to have gone off on one there.

bigTillyMint · 20/10/2014 06:50

That's a lovely dress, Cremo.

NU, what's your recipe for brownies with pistachios in? The DC had them in the pub the other night.

beachyhead · 20/10/2014 07:00

First proper dark morning Hmm left the house in moonlight with owls twitt twoo-ing around me.

cremolafoam · 20/10/2014 07:52

Ooh you southerners. It's been pitch black in the morning here since September.GrinGrin
Hey Beachy when are going to via doggies again!?

cremolafoam · 20/10/2014 07:53

View not via Wink

beachyhead · 20/10/2014 08:07

Well the rescue wants all members of the family there and the dog, but it is over an hour away and they are only open in the mornings! So logistically, it's going to be a push.

However, I met a woman in the woods (dog walkers will understand this; nothing strange. I have a huge network of 'friends' whose name I don't know, but who I always have a cheery chat with) who gave me the name of a local rescue I'll investigate later in the week.

motherinferior · 20/10/2014 08:19

Another day, another Ladyjog. Must get on.

cremolafoam · 20/10/2014 08:23

Ooh hope that bit of dog networking works out Beachy.
Good on you MI- impressedSmile

Stropperella · 20/10/2014 08:43

Lalsy, sorry, that rubbish example was mine. But you've confused me now. Confused (easily done) Here is an actual example from the hw:
"At the bottom of the shopping bag," answered Jill.
The teacher says it's "At the bottom of the shopping bag." answered Jill.

Stropperella · 20/10/2014 08:44

Still labouring on this week's assignment here and ds has now gone down with a sick bug. Boo.

Rosebag · 20/10/2014 09:04

That's lovely creno and at a sale price too. Will investigate further! NU I'm afraid I do have very prominent hips....in fact they're like a shelf. Great for child bearing, rubbish for fashion!
I'm still firmly in the comma camp when it comes to this punctuation conundrum. Might dig out my old and dusty copy of The University Grammar of English' and see what Quirke says although I don't know if he deals with punctuation as well.
Good luck with the continuing dog search, beachy.
Oh no, isolate him stropps no sick bugs allowed.
Ok, I am still very tired and stiff form the weekend but jobs all well done including DMs birthday party. I am now going to meet ConScript for another session in a cafe...hopefully he's buying this week. Then teaching at the theatre. Perhaps I will have woken up by then....
Happy Monday everyone Smile

motherinferior · 20/10/2014 09:28

I have a meeting with CDiff today; however, have just had conversation with the publisher (who is also attending) in which she expressed the opinion that the Patronising and Obstreperous Child (the one who would no doubt be full of views on commas and then says leave their precious text alone) is being a pain in the arse Grin.

BTW for those not on FB Addle's father died last week; it sounds like a 'good death' but of course it is also a v sad bereavement.

Rosebag · 20/10/2014 09:40

Sad for Addle. Condolences if she is reading.

ConScript has just texted to say he's running early and did I want a lift. In actual fact he's late as we arranged to meet at 9.30 not 10, as he no doubt thinks. Angry

Stropperella · 20/10/2014 09:44

Good luck for the meeting, MI. Cheering to have the publisher on side, at least. Well done on the early morning ladyjog.
Have dettoxed everything and ds is confined to his bed. He is upset that he is a) missing a "celebration assembly" where dh was going to view him getting awarded some achievement certificate or other and b) missing lasagne for lunch. Grin

Stropperella · 20/10/2014 09:46

Woah, Rosebag, you are one busy person. I'd be on my knees with your schedule. Hope the meeting with ConScript goes well.

lalsy · 20/10/2014 10:23

Aha, so sorry, Stropps, I understand now!

I think what both those sources say is whatever punctuation would be there when the sentence/phrase was said should be inside the quotes. If eg a comma or full stop belongs to the quotation, it goes inside. 'At the bottom of the shopping bag' is not a sentence so it shouldn't have a full stop. Maybe it should have a comma - I dunno, I think it depends on context and whether full thing is "At the bottom of the shopping bag," said Jill, "where I always leave it." I think - more examples in the links. So she is right saying a sentence in quotes has a full stop but what she has supplied is not a sentence.

Hope ds better soon.

MontserratCaballe · 20/10/2014 11:30

So sorry to hear the sad news about Addle's father. Sending you my best wishes Flowers

Beachy, fingers crossed for some good doggy news very soon.

Rose, you are putting me to shame! SO much in one day. Phew!

MI, hope your meeting goes well. Stand firm Smile

Have conducted ladyjog. 5 mins seems a hell of a long time for me to run and Brockwell park is quite hilly. Will it get any easier, fellow ladyjoggers?

motherinferior · 20/10/2014 11:33

Eventually. Ahem.

addle · 20/10/2014 11:54

Thank you everyone. I wanted to post here but just didn't and don't have any space in my head beyond very short sentences. Funeral this Friday. x

bigTillyMint · 20/10/2014 13:35

Monty, I thought you were supposed to start with 1 min run, 1 min walk?

addle, look after yourself. x

MontserratCaballe · 20/10/2014 13:39

BTM, I have done that - this is week 4 when the runs are longer than the walks. 3m run, 90s walk, 5m run, 2.5m walk and repeat. I see people flying along and just think wow! I was struggling today to keep up with a fantastic lady with the most vibrant purple hair who cannot have been under 65. In the end I had to run on the grass as she edged further into the distance.

Take care of yourself, Addle. Thinking of you XXX

bigTillyMint · 20/10/2014 13:42

Ah well, I guess you "just" have to keep goingWink This is why I prefer the gym!

Rosebag · 20/10/2014 14:28

And that is why prefer a walk rewarded by a panini and a cup of tea in Starbucks.... Blush

Ladies, my work is like busses....nothing for ages ( and I sink into a depression) and then three come along at once ( and I collapse with exhaustion). And all I ever wanted was a local job within school hours and what do I have? Mostly evening and weekend work with miserable nights in far away premier inns all alone.... Today has been my ideal....work between 9.30 and about now, all no more than five mins drive away with inspiring and fun peeps. A rare treat.

ConScript apologised for ballsing up on the time and paid for breakfast so I was gracious, between slurps of porridge and honey. We have written an exceptionally rude scene about farting in meetings and various other bodily functions Grin Blush amid much humour and sniggering.

motherinferior · 20/10/2014 16:04

I have survived a meeting with CDiff.
