Children's clothes - styles you don't like

Sweetasstevia · 23/09/2014 12:55

Is it just me? - certain styles of children's clobber make my teeth ache. Can't stand children wearing anything over styled or too grown up on a small child: These boys things make me sad :(

I hate sportswear on children.Loathe big fat white trainers and joggers look. Also hate dayglo sportswear with massive logos.

BunnyLebowski · 23/09/2014 13:01

I hate sportswear on little kids. Especially tracksuit bottoms and football shirts. Eurgh.

I also hate the 'miniature lad' style boys clothes and the little old man waistcoat and shirt combos.

In fact I hate most boys clothes. God know what DS is going to wear as he grows Grin .

I hate all slogan tops too. "Mummy's little Horror" etc.

For girls, anything overly pink and anything with 'Princess' written on it.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/09/2014 13:03

Oh tell me about it - I have an insanely tall 7 year old DD who has grown out of 'younger girls' in every shop bar H and M. No I don't want to put her in a T-shirt that says 'totes amaze'.

I can't stand babies and toddlers in rock band T-shirts. THEY DON'T KNOW WHO THE ROLLING STONES ARE.

Sweetasstevia · 23/09/2014 13:13

Those grown up style men's shirts and trousers on babies look so uncomfortable - how do babies sleep in them?

OP posts:
reddaisy · 23/09/2014 13:14

I don't like seeing young babies in denim - they need to be in soft material that is comfortable. I wouldn't want to sleep in my jeans, so don't put a newborn in them

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 23/09/2014 13:24

I hate that 90% of girls clothes are pink.. My dd is ginger and pink isn't a great look on her. I had her in jeans, a plain navy hoodie and a white top with a green flower on the other day and everyone assumed she was a boy... Hmm

Madamecastafiore · 23/09/2014 13:25

FLAT CAPS WTactualF is that all about

Madamecastafiore · 23/09/2014 13:26

And suits on small kids, even at weddings are shite. My DH wears one for work every so often and detests it, why put one on a small child?

tiredteddy · 23/09/2014 13:27

Yes Pinkandblue my dd is also ginger. All the pink looks ick on her as does the sickly coral that seems so popular.

And I add to the mix, headbands in babies- pointless!

sallysimpson · 23/09/2014 13:28

i can't stand jeans on little ones (under 1), especially newborns! Shock they always look so uncomfortable! baby girls are so much easier to find lovely clothes for than boys!

Sweetasstevia · 23/09/2014 13:29

Oh yes flat caps - I agree Bleugh! :(

OP posts:
eggybrokenoff · 23/09/2014 13:31

I would say anything 'styled' at all. anything that is a particular look/trend/category. kids just need to be comfortable and suited to the weather. that is it. with sensible shoes.

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 23/09/2014 13:31

Also agree with nice girls clothes being easier to find than nice boys clothes, my son is not 'mummy's little trouble maker' he's a beautiful innocent baby?!?! Hmm

ophiotaurus · 23/09/2014 13:33

Those stupid drain pipe jeans for little boys. My 4 year old hates them.

GreatJoanUmber · 23/09/2014 13:37

Tracksuit bottoms. Sports tops. TRAINERS. Anything with stupid slogans on.

That said, sounds like I'm on the bleurgh list for some of you - my boys have a lot of smart shirts, some 'old man style' outfits and - gasp! - grey tweed flat caps Wink

I actually like that Boden jacket you linked to, too!

PoppyAmex · 23/09/2014 13:40

I find it easy shopping for my toddler DS in the UK, if I ignore the ridiculous slogans I'm left with greys, browns and navy which are colours I really like anyway.

Buying for my toddler DD is a nightmare; most UK shops seem to specialise in loud, lurid pink patterns with loads of frills and 3D bows. Can't stand it.

Shoes are horrible, with the exception of some models from Startrite, Bobux and Little Blue Lamb.

I try to stock up when travelling back home in the continent, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian children's clothes are mostly sensible, pretty and simple/plain.

Purpleflamingos · 23/09/2014 13:40

My 5yr old ds my much prefers his tracksuit bottoms to jeans. Shorts would be his first choice. Hate the material rugby tops are made from so he only wears his for training (when he goes).

3yr old dd likes dresses, tutus etc although we compromise on pretty tunic tops and leggings now it's turning colder and she has started nursery. Perfect for moving around and playing in.

I hate seeing baby girls trying to crawl in pretty dresses that restrict their movement.

Baby denim can be very soft. Although I think romper suits or babygros are cuter.

I just don't like how children's clothes are so 'mini me'. I wouldn't wear a lot of the adult version of the clothes. Oh, and four, five and six year olds wearing 'I love 1D'.

PoppyAmex · 23/09/2014 13:41

Also, both my children were dressed exclusively in sleepsuits until they started crawling and it became unpractical.

I hate being uncomfortable in bed, so the thought of a baby (who spends a large amount of time sleeping) in made man fibres with zippers and buttons horrifies me.

Sweetasstevia · 23/09/2014 13:41

I like the Boden Jacket too - I bet it looks beautiful- just the idea of a poor little 2 year old wearing it and feeling all constricted breaks my heart!

OP posts:
TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/09/2014 13:45

What eggy said. I hate anything that isn't comfortable and practical - plasticy transfers, zips, buttons, applique, over detailing, patterns etc ie all Next clothes - should be banned. My 6 month old doesn't need pockets!

Babies should only wear sleepsuits with proper knitted cardigans until they are 1.

Disney and character clothes are the pits - plasticy material, horrid prints, stupid text, vile colours.

Text should be banned on children's clothes full stop. DS has a perfectly lovely sleepsuit RUINED by having '100% huggable' printed on it. (A gift, not my choice)

I will defend (good, soft, comfortable) jeans as they are practical and hard-wearing on toddlers. I also think that jogging bottoms are fine on kids - as long as they have no logos on.

I also like band t-shirts.

I hate all gendered clothing and I hate that neutral baby clothing in this country is all beige and cream. I have a lot from the US in lovely green, yellow, purple and orange.

minipie · 23/09/2014 13:45

I had always presumed that the waistcoats and tailored jackets are for when they go to a wedding or funeral?

I don't buy:

  • things with writing on
  • things with TV/film etc characters (hello kitty, peppa pig etc)
  • bright pink (I have a red head DD too)
  • anything clearly impractical/uncomfortable (glitter ballet pumps for a 2 year old? really?)

Not a fan of headbands on babies, or of triangle bikinis on little girls (ie before they have boobs).

I also don't like the really lurid brightly coloured prints a lot of kids clothes are made in - Jojomaman are particularly bad for this - great clothes, awful prints.

And why is all sportswear (eg UV suits/waterproofs/ski wear) only available in candy pink, magenta, bright turquoise or navy blue?

KatherinaMinola · 23/09/2014 13:46

The thing is, jogging bottoms are very practical and comfortable for toddlers - much better than jeans, as they are freer to move (or nap...) in them. I think they look fine with a nice cheerful t-shirt.

I too hate anything grown up. I'm not a fan of waisted styles (waisted dresses) on very little girls - they don't have waists like older children do, and the styles aren't flattering. Prefer dresses that flare out from a bodice.

KatherinaMinola · 23/09/2014 13:47

Oh yes - sequins. Hate them.

minipie · 23/09/2014 13:49

On the other hand I have been known to:

  • put jeans on my daughter, from about 9 months. They were jersey lined and elastic waisted, so soft and comfy but also hard wearing on the knees and warm.
  • put tracksuit bottoms on her as a baby - again they were soft and comfy and kept her warm.
leedy · 23/09/2014 13:50

Was just typing a reply and realized that Tondelayo had said most of it for me. Though have found it hard to avoid character clothing now that DS1 (nearly 5) has strong opinions about what he wants on his t-shirts - we have a lot of Spiderman, etc. tees though I do try to get ones in fabrics/prints that don't make my eyes bleed (M&S ones are pretty good). H&M and Gap are pretty good for soft baby stuff in bright colours.

Also hate little boys being dressed like a mid-level bank manager on his weekend off. HE IS A BABY, HE DOES NOT NEED TO WEAR A KNITTED TANK TOP OVER A SHIRT.
