Children's clothes - styles you don't like

Is it just me? - certain styles of children's clobber make my teeth ache. Can't stand children wearing anything over styled or too grown up on a small child: These boys things make me sad :(

dd was given a shirt by her nana which basically showed her whole midriff, she's 5.

It was so pro to Lolita that I charity shopped it at once, it didn't suit her at all.

Forgot to say, I've been looking for a little waistcoat and baker boy hat for DS. He already spends a lot of time wearing braces on his trousers. Though they are functional as well as cute.

mrsjavierbardem · 24/09/2014 00:06

sorry it was so proto-Lolita

Scoopmuckdizzy · 24/09/2014 00:20

I love the little bird range for my DSs and Little Joules is lovely too. Hate slogans - my mum and stepmum do seem to be a bit obsessed with buying them t-shirts warning of how loud they are,or that they're trouble etc. dislike sportswear, especially trainers and track suit bottoms. I hate the stuff in River Island - it's just miniature adult clothing.

Bragadocia · 24/09/2014 00:28

Laquila, Primark is good for leggings suitable for boys (not silly frilly ruched bits). DS wore their leggings almost every day from starting to walk until about 2.5. Navy, red, black, turquoise, stripes. Blurry pic of him modelling them in navy and white (whilst hard at work emptying the fridge) on my profile. Teamed with H&M popper vests in plain, bright colours.

tomanyanimals · 24/09/2014 08:03

I let my Ds pick his clothes and to be honest he's ended up with some plain shirts and some with diggers, airplanes and monsters he has only chosen two pairs of tracksuit bottoms the rest are jeans or cords I don't see the problem if they are what he likes he also has a pair of sandals he chose which have flashing lights when he walks and a pair of dinosaurs pumps both are his favourites I may not like them but he does why not let them pick they could surprise you.
He has also picked quite a lot of the baby clothes for when ds2 arrives which include jeans tracksuit bottoms and slogans with mummy loves me.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 24/09/2014 08:10

Stripes. It started when I was pregnant and I noticed how much maternity wear is striped (because when you're the size of a house you want horizontal stripes to emphasise it Hmm).

Now it's baby clothes, so many bloody stripes. It's impossible to find plain socks/hats/trousers - I don't want another pattern to try to match when I'm getting DD ready in the morning I just want plain things!!

(Although I've mostly given up on baby socks, fecking useless things, DD just pulls them off - she now wears tights most days)

No, I don't see the trackie bottom problem either - both of mine wear them a lot.

BralessAtBarbecues · 24/09/2014 09:22

I agree that babies in denim look awful. As do rock 'n roll T-shirts on tots. I can't bear it when parents try to mirror their child to their own fashion tastes.

ipswichwitch · 24/09/2014 09:32

DS2 - 9mo and crawling lots - gets put in leggings a lot of the time, as most trousers or tracky bottoms have a waist that's a bit too big for him so they end up sliding down his legs while crawling, an he just crawls right out of them! I get them from H&M, Polarn O Pyret (sale only, too expensive otherwise), and Gap do some nice ones, some have feet on too so no problem socks.

I hate seeing little girls trying to crawl about in ridiculous frilly dresses that they keep kneeling on. I'm sure that's why DNiece didn't bother with crawling - probably got fed up tripping over!

leedy · 24/09/2014 11:16

"I can't bear it when parents try to mirror their child to their own fashion tastes."

But presumably when they're babies they don't have fashion tastes? Frankly I've always regarded the baby years as a fine opportunity to dress my children up in things that I think look cute/amusing on them, and yes, that includes the baby wearing a Bowie t-shirt. Once DS1 hit about 3 he had very strong opinions about what he wanted to wear, which involved a lot more character t-shirts. Oh, and orange.

samlamb · 24/09/2014 11:20

Starspotter are you me?!! I spent a fortune on molo pop etc for my DS. I dressed him in leggings too until he was 3 ish and was forever being told leggings are for girls. I don't care!! I still love it when he wears these

Also hate to see young kids in denim or restrictive clothes that are worn for the parents benefit . Children should be comfortable at all times not dressed up like dolls

leedy · 24/09/2014 11:24

Yes, agree on the restrictive clothes, though a lot of baby denim (eg some of the H&M styles) is actually very soft, more like a washed chambray, and has elasticated waist, etc. Wouldn't put babies in rigid jeans, though.

MallowsMiaow · 24/09/2014 17:18

leedy Absolutely, if my kids are too young to have their own preferences and I'm the one doing the buying of the clothes then the clothes are going to reflect my tastes not theirs.

I have no idea how you'd dress babies if you weren't using your own tastes? Would there need to be a uniform?

StarSpotter · 26/09/2014 20:32

high fives SamLamb for the leggings
Laquila - I buy girls' ones from H and M - they have a lot of neutral colours and I buy him ones with stars on and stuff.. I always check the girl sections
Other favourites are POP (only in sale!) and again, most of the others in sale I like are.. Little Peco, The Pippa and Ike Show, SidneyBoo, Tootsa MacGinty
Oh and the new Donna Wilson collaboration with John Lewis - although check the girls' stuff too. It's very irritatingly categorised into gender!
