Children's clothes - styles you don't like

Sweetasstevia · 23/09/2014 12:55

Is it just me? - certain styles of children's clobber make my teeth ache. Can't stand children wearing anything over styled or too grown up on a small child: These boys things make me sad :(

I hate tacky slogans, my particular bugbear is a sleepsuit that was given to DS that said Mummys Little Solider (with the apostrophe missing).

I also dislike most of the clothing for boys widely available, there seems less choice than for girls and too many tacky graphics. That said I'm not a huge fan of pink either.

I agree on the Scandinavian brands doing great clothes, DS wears lots of Maxomorra, Kidsen, Mini Rodini, Smafolk and European brands like Bobo Choses or quirky UK brands like Beau Loves.

SureFootedWhispher · 23/09/2014 16:08

I tend to buy Toby Tiger, otherwise I let 2.9 pick most of her clothing within reason. She wears rubbish characters which I hate, along with glitter and bows and frills and pink.

leedy · 23/09/2014 16:15

Oh yes, the Scandi brands are lovely. But sooooooooo expensive.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/09/2014 16:20

H&M is a Scandinavian brand that does (mostly) good & cheap kids clothes.

leedy · 23/09/2014 16:25

Oh yes, forgot about H&M being Scandinavian (even though I mentioned them upthread) - they're particularly good for nice bright baby things, get a bit less good for older boys.

Polarn o Pyret are also excellent, but more on the pricey end of things (get a lot of stuff from there in the sales).

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2014 16:26

I hate frilly dresses. No way can kids move I'm. Some of that crap.

Don't get the problem with jogging bottoms though..perfect for toddlers. Not fair on nursery staff to be messing about with jeans and dresses all day when the kids could sort themselves out if they are in joggers and a t shirt

Dd lives in them. Meh

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/09/2014 16:26

In some

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/09/2014 16:53

Sorry Leedy I missed that you'd mentioned them.

NoMoreHappyMrsChicken · 23/09/2014 17:04

I always vowed I'd never have character stuff.

But do you know what? The DDs love it, that makes me happy so there Grin

Oh and I also love the shoes with lights.

That said the remainder of their wardrobe is Boden. Does that balance it out?

ElephantsNeverForgive · 23/09/2014 17:11

I never realised H&M were Scandinavian, that explains why their kids stuff fits slender DD2 and their adult stuff is hopeless on me and DD1.

All the Scandinavian women I've ever meet have perfect tall boyish figures. Not great wide British hips.

WanderingTrolley1 · 23/09/2014 17:15

Sportswear and trainers
Headbands on babies
Jewellery of any description
Bikinis

leedy · 23/09/2014 17:18

How about wigs for baldy babies? :)

minipie · 23/09/2014 20:23

leedy I think I was wrong about the age - 7 year olds probably did wear one pieces. But 2/3/4 year olds I'm sure were in pants.

Mydelilah · 23/09/2014 22:55

I detest anything with a disney/tv character on it, and metalicy or quotes in print. Sadly my kids are desperate for these thingsHmm

We have compromised - they are allowed character pants, knickers, socks and pyjamas only. Anything goes for pyjamas! Everything else seen in public has to be comfy, practical and tasteful. I buy (selectively) a lot of Gap, H&M, mini Boden and M&s....

TeaAddict235 · 23/09/2014 23:02

hate hate hate childrens t-shirts with messages on them:

"please stop kissing me"

or

"too cute for this world"

!!!

I mean stop this crap and just give me a plain bloody t-shirt.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 23/09/2014 23:10

It doesn't end at Hello kitty and Tatty teddy.

It just gets replaced with Jack Willis (sale), Superdry, Dr who, Sherlock and Harry Potter.

Character clothes and designer names are a bit naff, but DCs love them and get a great deal of pleasure from them.

DCs have uniform at school and all their adult lives to wear tasteful clothes.

Mydelilah · 23/09/2014 23:10

please stop kissing me

^ yuk. Just yuk!

Laquila · 23/09/2014 23:16

StarSpotter PLEASE point me in the direction of leggings for boys!! It is a continuing frigging mystery to me that these are so hard to find.

I seem to have similar taste to everyone on this thread, which is quite heartening, somehow :)

I do love plain tracksuit bottoms for my 1yr old though, and have since he was tiny - they were the only thing that was soft enough. He's just moved on to lined cords and brightly-coloured H&M chinos now.

I think my biggest pet hates are kids clothes with any kind of text on them, and anything hipster, such as moustaches/fake braces etc. We don't need faux-ironic babies.

TeaAddict235 · 23/09/2014 23:18

I know mydeliah, this specific t-shirt I use to mop up spills on purpose as it came from a supposed fashionista, my SIL.

another one we have is, "here comes trouble". please stop labelling my son with un PC stereotypes, is what I want to tell her; I'll wait a few months then send them off to a charity shop.

Greengardenpixie · 23/09/2014 23:23

I cannot stand over fashioned girls things for my 7 year old. I cannot stand matalan older girls wear. Full of fashionable things that are badly cut and hiddeous material and just not age appropriate [ unless its a basics item]
My ds wears jeans and a scabby t-shirt..sometimes with a long sleeved tee under it and crocs or trainers. He looks cool. He is 6.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/09/2014 23:46

Laquila my DS used to live in leggings because of his eczema - he couldn't get to his legs to scratch. And he looked quite cool! I don't think I ever succeeded in finding boys ones but I used to buy girls' plain black ones or denim style ones. He was a baby and didn't care, and the labels were on the inside so no-one else knew! You do have to watch for sneaky ruching, bows and zips though!

GodPlayedByJamesMason · 23/09/2014 23:57

Pretty sure h&m have boys tights in ATM, saw some recently but think they had batman logo on?

I hate skulls on everything (only have boys so can't comment on girls clothes) why would I want a symbol for death on my babies?

HerRoyalNotness · 24/09/2014 00:01

One thing I've been seeing on Instagram lately is toddler girls wearing romper pants with a crop top, it is really bleurg.

Other than that I dislike character/themed clothes, sports team clothes, sports stuff, too sparkly, too fussy/frilly, light up shoes.

I get comfy pants from gap for the DSs, marketed as joggers but they're normally plain grey or navy in a jersey (?) type fabric, the do shorts as well and then lined ones for winter. Great for lounging around the house, and perfect for nursery where they are still napping, very comfortable. I do like the scandi ones though, they'll do a colourful stripe pair for interest. I also like most of the scandi clothes, it was a great shame when Nordic kids closed down.

HerRoyalNotness · 24/09/2014 00:03

One of the worst slogans we saw on DHs DD was one that said, if mum says no, ask dad. A child of divorced parents, not a great message to send, it went in the bin.

MallowsMiaow · 24/09/2014 00:04

I think loads of you would hate the clothes my kids wear.

I'm a sucker for anything with skulls or pixar/comic book characters on, can't stand plain t-shirts, I don't wear them myself so I'm unlikely to put my kids in them.

All their clothes have to be practical though, DD is still mostly in vests and onesies.
