What's so good about J.Crew?

Just got a fancy brochure and it gave me a free code. I did a fantasy shop and it turns out the free code gave me free shipping which was worth £50 Shock seriously? It's usa postage cost yet the site only let's you order from the uk site which has half the us stock at double US prices. Is it worth it?

Is J Crew the same as Crew Clothing Company?

AimlesslyPurposeful · 13/11/2014 21:14

No BikeRunSki.

rootypig · 13/11/2014 21:15

Each the sizes are huge. Yes to jeans. Definitely size down

FreeButtonBee · 13/11/2014 21:19

I am a good size 12 (occasion 10) with 32f boobs and a tippi in s fits perfectly but I am short so that makes a difference I think. Tippi wear well (and I machine wash on delicate cycle in a washing bag). Need ironing but relatively little bobbling with a year's wear.

EachandEveryone · 13/11/2014 21:23

I can't get over that coat I tried on today converts to £231 plus another 25% off on top of that. It was £380 over here. I wonder if there's away around the postage.

angeltulips · 13/11/2014 21:24

I love j crew and don't like Boden so go figure. They have really good basics and are great for workwear. I get asked all the time about pieces from j crew.

I'm not sure the stock is the same in the us - I've been in a couple of times there and been underwhelmed whereas I can usually find something in the uk.

FYI if you order online you can return directly to any uk store - no need to post back.

EachandEveryone · 13/11/2014 21:25

I don't think I've seen such a difference since the old days when a Levis were £25 quid over there.

angeltulips · 13/11/2014 21:28

Anthropologie is also really bad for uk mark up

EachandEveryone · 14/11/2014 13:05

I know and their salaries are really low.

NoelleHawthorne · 14/11/2014 23:26

I didn't find the the tippi big. It's fitted. I'm a Busty 12

ZaraW · 15/11/2014 08:41

I just got a friend from the US to order me a linen shirt for £10 total bargain no way I would ever pay the prices in the UK unless deeply discounted.

hollyisalovelyname · 15/11/2014 09:22

The Tippi cardi would cost 100.73 euro and that's with 25 per cent off today.
15 euro to deliver to Ireland
18 euro tax.
For a scrachy wool jumper.... no thanks.
I'd prefer cashmere.
How much is it in UK ( delivery costs included) ?
I have bought from J Crew in the US as I do like their clothes.

EachandEveryone · 15/11/2014 11:05

£89 free delivery.

hollyisalovelyname · 15/11/2014 14:41

So it works out cheaper to Ireland as 1 euro is 78 pence approximately

MorrisZapp · 15/11/2014 14:56

Isn't there a company that specializes in ordering stuff in the US, and then shipping over here? There's loads of shops that wont let you order from the UK, because the price difference is so huge.

My dp loved J Crew when we visited the USA, so I wanted to surprise him with a little something from a recent trip to London. I walked out empty handed and slack jawed. Thirty quid for a pair of socks? I love dp and don't mind spending thirty quid on him but it's the principle. Fuck that, J Crew.

Eastpoint · 15/11/2014 15:04

I bought a silk shirt with a code which gave free gift with purchase & free p&p. The shirt was too big - arms much too long & body almost down to my knees (I'm 5'6") so decided to return it. I was sent an RMA which deducted £36.75 for the free gift. I emailed them back to ask if I could return the gift to get credit for that too... In the end I had time to go to one of the stores & the assistant was lovely, she said I could keep the gift & she would refund the full amount. Based on how long it took to arrive & the return process I wouldn't bother again.

rubybleu · 15/11/2014 15:24

I spent a couple of hundred quid in their East Village store last week on a trip to NYC. Their sizes are all over the shop. I'm a small 10 and got everything from XS silk blouses to a pair of size 12 (US 8) trousers.

I'm another who doesn't like Boden as I find it frumpy but J Crew suits my conservative/safe/pared back style. The UK prices are utterly bonkers though and I wait until my DP is in the US for work or we have friends coming to visit to get J. Crew.

Gap and Banana Republic are priced very competitively compared to their pricing in the States so maybe J. Crew will follow if sales aren't good here.

butterfliesinmytummy · 15/11/2014 15:28

I live in the USA, not a fan of j crew but I like banana republic, also Loft (which ships to the UK) and adore Madewell (which doesn't)

EachandEveryone · 15/11/2014 16:10

I'm surprised there's not a Loft over here, hadn't there ever been?

FrugalFashionista · 15/11/2014 19:05

There are good bits and bad bits. They must have a great PR program for bloggers though as they get so much love from them. In general, I don't think their quality quite matches their prices, and my favorite J Crew items are off US eBay or with the tags on for half the price after the novelty of the item has worn off. I don't like their jeweled stuff but their classic/preppy stuff is pretty timeless for work.

I bought a delectable pale fig colored pair of Madewell gladiator sandals in the summer sales for circa 35 euros - fantastic quality for the price, wish they had a presence in Europe too.

MilkThistle187 · 15/11/2014 19:32

They have fabulous stylists working for them. The website is full of great, stylish outfits made up of fairly basic pieces just put together really well

Mominatrix · 15/11/2014 19:36

J Crew is definitely a victim of vanity sizing, which is rampant in the US. When I started wearing them back in the 1990s, I wore a size 2/4 (I was 92-94 pounds then - I believe that that is about 6 and a half stone, 5'2"). I am currently 96-98 pounds (hovering about 7 stone) and I wear a 00 (sometimes 000) and an xxs. I have gained weight and have shrunk in size! Take the sizing with a grain of salt.

NoelleHawthorne · 18/11/2014 17:45

oKAY.
I tried on the tippi ( label still on) with my Zara 7/8 and a leopard belt. I BLOODY GET IT NOW
