What's so good about J.Crew?

Just got a fancy brochure and it gave me a free code. I did a fantasy shop and it turns out the free code gave me free shipping which was worth £50 Shock seriously? It's usa postage cost yet the site only let's you order from the uk site which has half the us stock at double US prices. Is it worth it?

sign up to the UK mailing list, you get UK codes all the time, and free shipping and returns. Doing it that way, I got a few good pieces at a reasonable price more in line with the US.

And now I am in the US and it's cheaper so isn't that interesting to me any more Grin

My friends fashionista daughter bought a £30 denim shirt from H and M with sparkles on she said it's a direct J Crew rip off that's why she bought it. It's very nice quality.

FamiliesShareGerms · 11/11/2014 23:35

I want to get married again so I can have a J Crew gown Blush

Want2bSupermum · 11/11/2014 23:42

It's much cheaper here. Their dresses don't suit me at all but they are perfect for boring office wear that is smart.

Regular clothes come from The Limited which is excellent and affordable. Their suits are good for someone like me who needs something washable and cheaper because they are not back to their prepregnancy size to wear their nice wool jcrew suits!

Floisme · 12/11/2014 07:01

I was in New York earlier this year and planned to take advantages of lower prices and buy a bit from J Crew but everything looked so dull that I walked out. I am not extreme in my style at all but I really don't get the appeal.

rootypig · 12/11/2014 07:29

The shops are so much worse than the website! it's baffling.

NoelleHawthorne · 12/11/2014 07:32

lol at gown

MrsCampbellBlack · 12/11/2014 15:05

thankme gets 20% off at the moment

EachandEveryone · 12/11/2014 15:41

What's the delivery charge though?

rootypig · 12/11/2014 17:52

I've always had free delivery and returns in the UK - I thought that was standard?

NoelleHawthorne · 12/11/2014 19:13

oh god i am tempted by a tippi again

STOP ME

EachandEveryone · 12/11/2014 19:49

When my friend sent stuff back she had to pay US postage

MrsCampbellBlack · 13/11/2014 05:23

I've never paid for postage or returns.

I love the tippis and have several. Also really rate the pixi pants.

Mominatrix · 13/11/2014 06:02

Well, I love J Crew, but perhaps that is because my style is quite "boring". I find that their basics are good quality fabrics, good cut, and will last years. It is not like boden, but what Boden would like to be (Johnny Boden was inspired to start his company when looking at a J Crew catalog). It has always been preppy with a twist. It is the only place I can find shorts that fit perfectly with bright, fun colours. It's petite range is a godsend for me, and the styling of the clothes is great - particularly the things which nod to the current trends. It is (was - now that they are opening shops in Paris) the only non French label articles of clothing my Parisian friends would ask me where I purchased.

It is much cheaper in the States and I am constantly being sent significant discount codes to use. The Collection range is their higher end range, so is more expensive. I rarely pay full price - and often purchase at less than 50%.

Dancingyogi · 13/11/2014 06:20

Visited a store in the US last spring, was surprised by how plain and dull everything was. I tried loads of stuff on, just in case I was missing something special - like classic with a great cut? Got a couple of tippis but they have a weird neckline and stick out at the back. Overpriced in the UK without a doubt, worth a look in the U.S. with a promo code or in the sale.

berceuse · 13/11/2014 06:49

I have a lot of J Crew clothes (lived in the US). They are OK, not worth the hype imo, I preferred Banana Republic in the end when I lived there.

DH, tall slim chap loves JC because their large tall fits him perfectly. He struggles with stylish clothes for the tall man here in the UK which we don't seem to cater for very well. We seem to think that tall = slightly round in sizing here, apart from v few shops.

MrsCampbellBlack · 13/11/2014 07:19

You see Banana Republic clothes just don't fit me well but j crew generally do.

Pretty much agree with everything that momin said.

I like the neckline of the tippi - in fact am wearing a navy one today.

Dancingyogi · 13/11/2014 07:36

I like the neckline of the tippi from the front but side on the back sticks out on me - never had this happen before.

BrandyAlexander · 13/11/2014 08:59

I think their classic preppy look is me to a tee. Their prices here are outrageous. Thankfully, I am constantly in the US so just buy there. They always have 30% discounts there - a bit like Laura Ashley, I never pay full price!

Things that I have loved..... their jeans are perfect. I have both matchstick and toothpick. Their Tippi sweater looks good. They did a great line in bejewelled tees last last year that are so good for someone whose casual is still quite smart. I have a couple of cashmere sweaters that are a great fit. Overall quality of their clothes is good. As I said I would feel a lot less love if i was paying uk prices!

EachandEveryone · 13/11/2014 10:22

Are the tippis suitable for a size 14 with big boobs? I keep looking at the lovely colours.

NoelleHawthorne · 13/11/2014 17:28

I got a L. I'm the same. It's not so L

FibonacciSeries · 13/11/2014 17:50

They do have some clothes that steer away (but not much Grin) from the preppy look and are very well made. I bought a camo jacket in the US that I wore to death this summer and a heart-pattern jumper here in their London store that's really good quality and helps make a lovely weekend outfit.

FibonacciSeries · 13/11/2014 17:51

(Plus I'm a huge fan of Jenna Lyons)

EachandEveryone · 13/11/2014 21:08

Well I've just been in the London store. The sizes seemed quite generous. Does this apply to the jeans as well. The Tipee jumpers are quite thin for the price, do they was well? I thought sone of their duffle style coats were lovely not sure about the £400 price tag though!

EachandEveryone · 13/11/2014 21:12

I've just looked at the US site. Same coat $360 with an extra 25% off. It really is a rip off.
