Stylish summer trousers

SuburbanCrofter · 17/05/2014 11:09

Right then, stylish ladies of the interweb. I need some summer trousers that are comfortable enough for the school run and working at home (I am a freelancer) yet don't look frumpy. Cotton preferably. I am 5'5", size 12. Go!

Bump

Pleeease ladies I need your help! I'm clueless - I used to wear wide-legged trousers for the summer, but I don't think they're in fashion any more, are they :-(

Chinos? Gap ones look good!

TheFairyCaravan · 17/05/2014 20:42

Next harem pants. I have every colour on that link. I find them really comfortable, very flattering and easy to dress up and down.

I sorted out my Summer clothes today and chucked all my linen trousers for the charity shop.

SoFishy · 17/05/2014 20:42

Grazia claims wideleg are in! here

Or this kind of thing?

Does it have to be cotton trousers? I am like you (work at home/school run) and in summer I often wear cropped (skinny/straight) jeans or sometimes wideleg linen trousers with converse-type plimsolls or birkenstocks. I don't think it's frumpy, maybe I'm old wrong though.

SoFishy · 17/05/2014 20:46

this kind of look Though I wouldn't wear white ones (or spend £100).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/05/2014 20:47

I have these in black and really like them.

SoFishy · 17/05/2014 20:50

Or Boden if you fancy bright colours!

SuburbanCrofter · 17/05/2014 21:23

Thank you ladies for all your suggestions! I think Boden and Jigsaw are a bit pricey for me, but I'm getting some ideas about the look.

TheFairyCaravan, do those Next trousers change shape or shrink in the wash?

I have the 'smudge print' (sort of leopard print) Next harem trousers and they wash like a dream. No need to iron either. I wear them with a simple vest top, strappy sandals and a chunky gold necklace.

SuburbanCrofter · 17/05/2014 22:16

Thanks Frankie (I'm picturing you as Rita Ora!)

frankietwospots · 17/05/2014 22:19

ha ha! Def not Rita Ora!

SuburbanCrofter · 23/05/2014 14:34

Thanks for the tip Frankie, I bought these in smudge print. I also took advice from feedback on their website and went one size smaller than my usual size - and the 10s fit me perfectly.

I just have to get some tops to go with them now!! All mine are a bit too long and seem to emphasise my stomach in these trousers...

Sorry and Fairy!

TheFairyCaravan - are those Next trousers really flattering? I'm not keen on harem trousers but those ones (especially the printed ones) look great.

I'm 5 ft 5, size 12 on bottom half, long legs.

thanks!

TheFairyCaravan · 23/05/2014 19:06

Superfly I think they are flattering, you will more than likely need a 10. I am a 10, 5ft4 with longish legs and had to buy an 8. They fit like a dream to me, wash well and don't need to be ironed.

I bought every colour because I have back and pelvic problems and as a result certain clothes, like jeans, hurt me. Those harem pants are really comfy and can be dressed up and down, I do get compliments when I wear them so they can't look that bad!

icanmakeyouicecream · 23/05/2014 20:31

I sec

icanmakeyouicecream · 23/05/2014 20:31

I second the Next harem pants! Very flattering. I'm 5'5 and a size 12 on the bottom and they are perfect.

frankietwospots · 23/05/2014 22:40

Yay, so glad you like them SurburbanCrofter! I wear them with a simple (old) navy vest top from Uniqlo which is just the right length, plus this grey Next bomber jacket if it's cold:

Oh and this necklace too: uk.accessorize.com/view/product/uk_catalog/acc_2,acc_2.3/5820138100

beanandspud · 23/05/2014 23:10

May not be popular but M&S chinos are good and can be turned up. Quite big on the waist so you may need to size down but they are comfy and flattering.

beenheadhunted · 23/05/2014 23:22

Are the Next harem trousers still flattering if you are short and erm, dumpy? Size 16 these days Confused Anyone?

BumWad · 23/05/2014 23:31

Just bought these:

Carhartt

rockybalboa · 26/05/2014 20:42

How do you dress up the Next trousers? I am currently sporting a black pair that I bought today and I just can't see how I can make them look sufficiently presentable to leave the house in! The smudge print ones looked ludicrous. And this was with a plain black vest top.

milkysmum · 02/06/2014 22:14

Just bought the next harem trousers on the back of this thread. Went for a black pair to be safe but might lick up a couple more as they are a fab fit. Looking for inspiration regarding best tops to go with them?

frankietwospots · 02/06/2014 22:17

I wore my Next smudge print harems on Saturday with a navy vest top and a denim shirt left undone. My friend said I looked lovely!

milkysmum · 02/06/2014 22:27

Denim shirt? Wouldn't have thought of that but yes I am liking the idea! Thanks
