How do you get make up to stay on?

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 20:01

Took time with my make up this morning, all gone by 10.30. Am fed up of people telling me I look pale/ill/tired.
My routine was:
Olay serum
Origins Plantscription moisturiser
Wait 10/15 mins
Benefit Porefessional primer
Ysl concealer
Ysl foundation
More concealer
Quick brush of some L'Oreal powder
No7 Blusher
Looked ok leaving the house but awful by 10.30. My skin isn't particularly oily so why won't it stay on me. Am trying to update my makeup but am loathe to spend if it won't last. Any ideas please?

I don't rate the benefit primer at all, never helped my make up at all. I alternate beauty flash balm and the House of Colour primer, depending on whether I want a dewy or matte finish.

Also, how do you apply your foundation? Could you be rubbing off the primer?

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 20:08

I apply with foundation brush. Am going to buy Real Techniques brush on weekend.
Am not sure about primer either but I have never used one before and it had some good reviews so I took a chance. I fancy a dewy finish. Where is that primer from?

Laura mercier primer , real tecniques face brush , dior forever flawless or double wear and the Laura mercier translucent setting powder is my base . Seems to last not too bad .

QueenofallIsee · 01/05/2014 20:30

The YSL doesn't work for you - it'll just be the consistency and your skin are a bad combo (I have the same weird phenomenon with Clinique). I use Dior and have no dramas now. I would try a different brand of foundation

Anjelika · 01/05/2014 20:35

Hi. Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (you can buy a small tube from Boots for £12.50 which lasts ages) followed by Estée Lauder double wear foundation lasts all day on me. I don't wear powder - just bronzer and/or blusher over the top.

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 20:36

Think you are right about ysl. The concealer covers my spider veins initially then within 2 hours they are visible again Sad
I have a few samples at the moment but am not happy with any of them. Back to the drawing board I guess. Think I may visit a couple of counters this weekend. Bobbi Brown and Clarins any good? Already tried Estee Lauder, Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and Origins foundation and CC cream. This looking good lark is hard work!

Anjelika was just looking at the Smashbox Photo finish setting powder on Boots.com. That also looks very interesting.

Uses the serum at night only, ditch it during the day. Use lanacane anti chaff gel as a primer. Benefit anything is Beneshit imo, useless over priced brand.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/05/2014 20:41

The lanacane had the same ingredients as the smash box primer.

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 20:44

Great tip Dame, thanks for that. Will add that to my shopping list.

I don't rate the benefit primer for helping my makeup stay on.

I prep my skin very well and my foundation stays on. When I was working I would put my foundation on at 7am and it would be on at 6pm.

Cleanse, tone and then effaclar duo.
Lancome Genefique serum
Lancome visionnaire serum
Hydralauron serum
Lancome hydra zen moisturiser

Wait a few minutes

Clarins Beauty flash balm

Then lancome miracle air de teint.

I don't need powder , it stays in place. Much better than Estée Lauder double wear which was too heavy for me, this is long lasting but light and natural.

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 21:07

Just been looking at Beauty flash balm. Is it a primer or serum? Confused

OP posts:
42notTrendy · 01/05/2014 21:12

Beauty flash balm definitely not a serum. I don't think technically it's a primer either! If my skin is having a good day, I'll put it on and nothing else but lipstick and mascara. I do think it helps make up a bit. But I have oily skin and I've yet to find anything that keeps make up looking good all day.

Philoslothy · 01/05/2014 21:20

It is not a primer and is a cross between a primer and a heavy moisturiser I guess.

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 21:23

Is there a concealer that will actually conceal my spider veins all day? Or is it just a case or trying to see what works for you? If so, could be an expensive process Grin

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 22:23

Yes I did try Bare Minerals. Had the lady put it on. Bought it all then had to return because it made me want to scratch my face off Sad

I was Shock at all those serums too!

Ysl slides off me by lunchtime. Now trying Estée Lauder double wear - have to soak it off before bedtime! Quite matte but am going to experiment with primers & less/no powder to get a more dewy look.

emilyofnewmoon · 01/05/2014 22:29

Good idea Onthebottom Seems we need to experiment. Will try my sample of double wear again tomorrow with no serum. Hopefully get it right one day!

I really like the Lancôme foundations - have been using Teint Idole for a while now and it stays put pretty well. Wrt your routine, the thing that jumped out at me was lots of moisture (serum and moisturiser) - it's maybe causing makeup not to stay put?

ILoveWooly · 02/05/2014 16:04

Thanks for the tip damediazepam! I just tried it and my skin feels so smooth!!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/05/2014 16:08

Great, isn't it?:)

AWombWithoutARoof · 02/05/2014 16:11

MAC concealer is great, that hides my spider veins.

I do this:

wash face with water
Caudalie elixir spray
Clinique moisturising gel
concealer on veins and under eyes
BB cream (a mix of Garnier and La Roche Posay as the LRP one is too light but I don't want to waste it)

The trick is to not rub the concealer off with the BB cream, and build the BB cream with a patting motion where you need most cover.

THEN DON'T TOUCH FACE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY!

ILoveWooly · 02/05/2014 16:16

I am so pleased... A fraction of the cost of the benefit primer I used and twice as good. Did feel odd buying it though! Wink
