Make up on the train

Is it acceptable to do your make up on the train .. Powder blush mascara and lip balm. Nothing gross like eyebrow plucking
I do get some funny looks. Isn't it normal/acceptable?
What's a girl to do?

I'd say try to minimise the hygiene problem by not letting your brushes touch surfaces and avoiding applying with fingers. I can't see why people should be disgusted.

PartTimePunk · 07/03/2014 19:22

minderjinx but surely that is the case, no? I couldn't give a rashers what anyone on public transport thinks of my appearance, but the same doesn't apply to whomever I'm going to meet be it friends or work colleagues.

NearTheWindymill · 07/03/2014 19:24

I don't think someone putting on make-up on a train would annoy me as much as some of the really loud telephone conversations that seem contrived for everyone to hear or just make the person sound like a bit of an idiot who has no idea of boundaries in public.

coffeeinbed · 07/03/2014 19:24

So no one else has seen someone in their hair rollers?
I know I didn't dream it.

tribpot · 07/03/2014 19:27

Absolutely loving the Tampax response Grin Why not have a smear test done and get that over with on the train too?! :)

Btw, whilst we're on the subject of artifice for its own sake, the thing that winds me up more than makeup on the train is people who wear high heeled shoes only in the office and have to take them off if they so much as nip over the road for a sarnie. I'm not talking about wearing sensible shoes for the commute in, these are literally shoes they can only manage to totter around in in the office. If you work at Vogue, fine. I work in IT. No-one gives a toss what shoes you wear.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 19:27

Maybe she was from Liverpool, I believe it's quite the trend to go out with rollers in your hair there.

gloucestergirl · 07/03/2014 19:37

What's the problem with someone putting on their make-up? I'd just be jealous that they'd probably have had an extra 10 minutes in bed than me. As a commuter with a 1.5-2 hour journey each way, I know how valuable each minute is in the morning. If stares bother you, go into the toilet or hide behind a corner at on the platform.

BoomerangSam · 07/03/2014 19:40

I'm shocked that so many people have an issue with it. I've seen it countless times and have loved watching the transformation.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/03/2014 19:49

Brushing hair is disgusting?Confused

coffeeinbed · 07/03/2014 19:59

On the train or tube yes.
there's all sort of dry skin and shedding hair flying everywhere.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 07/03/2014 20:06

I do that trib. I like high heeled shoes but don't want to walk up the shops in them. So what?

NuggetofPurestGreen · 07/03/2014 20:08

I could wear them to go up to the shops as in I can walk in them but I'm quicker if I put on my runners.

itsbetterthanabox · 07/03/2014 20:08

Totally fine. I do it on the bus as long as no one is sitting right next to me.
I'm just sitting there doing nothing otherwise. My makeup doesn't make a mess and doesn't affect anyone else on the bus so why should there be an issue? I don't get funny looks either.

Fannydabbydozey · 07/03/2014 20:23

I don't wear make up for people on the train, I wear it for myself. So I'll put it on wherever I want to. Do people really care? And as for comparing it to inserting a tampon? Really? People honestly think this way? Just wow.

Believe me, I'd much rather see a woman (or a man, why not?) put makeup on whilst travelling than sit opposite a daily mail reader.

That really IS offensive.

Lilly20again · 07/03/2014 20:24

Omg for a decade I did hair and makeup on the train.
When your twenty getting out of bed is hard, an extra ten or twenty mins is worth it.
I wouldn't care less if it irritated anyone tbh, people are irritating for many, many reasons, you'll always upset someone.

OddFodd · 07/03/2014 20:29

There's a woman who sometimes sits opposite me on the train (at the table) and not only does her make up but straightens her hair and eats her breakfast too!

I rather admire her chutzpah :)

squoosh · 07/03/2014 20:31

Makeup, hair straightening and cornflakes! That's impressive.

JRsandCoffee · 07/03/2014 20:34

I'm impressed too! Hair straighteners on the train, I couldn't drive them stationary in front of a mirror at home!

atthestrokeoftwelve · 07/03/2014 20:40

I'm amazed that anyone finds it offensive.
Putting on make up is far less offensive than the many people having loud banal conversations on the phone.

AnaisB · 07/03/2014 20:48

Those people who think it's inconsiderate - are you failing to consider the people (like me) who enjoy watching?

scottishmummy · 07/03/2014 20:49

Vulgar,gross and bit trampy

HappyGirlNow · 07/03/2014 20:51

I hate it. It makes me feel queasy and a bit disgusted. It's not something that should be done in public imo.

Loulou000 · 07/03/2014 20:53

I don't mind if people do their make up on the train. I do find it kind of impossible not to watch, though, but maybe that's acceptable too. :)

Not ok would be cutting nails or tweezing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/03/2014 20:54

Not so much offensive as just a bit skanky. Undignified.

scottishmummy · 07/03/2014 20:58

I'm not jealous or even wel jel of a disorganised slattern who can't get out bed
And consequently need additional time on train to apply their slap.
You see I'm groomed,organised at home.i don't need extra 10min in bed
