Make up on the train

Is it acceptable to do your make up on the train .. Powder blush mascara and lip balm. Nothing gross like eyebrow plucking
I do get some funny looks. Isn't it normal/acceptable?
What's a girl to do?

I don't care - I'm more worried about the tube suddenly jolting and the mascara wand poking their eye out!!!

I agree thre are worse things people can do. I watched someone SHAVE THEIR LEGS by the side of an outside pool.

NigellasDealer · 07/03/2014 12:25

no it is disgusting to be honest.

  1. for a start you are not using make-up for what it is, eg to present your 'perfect' face to the world.
  2. you are acting as though nobody around you is worth considering.
  3. those kind of mouth actions and self observing things u have to do when putting on make-up are truly gross to the general public.
RobinSparkles · 07/03/2014 12:27

It wouldn't occur to me to do my makeup on the train but it wouldn't bother me if somebody else did.

I'd feel way too self conscious to do it myself though. I hate people watching me do my makeup, even at home. I even tell my DDs to go away if they're in the bathroom and I'm doing my makeup.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 07/03/2014 12:28

Nigella you are easily disgusted!

Oblomov · 07/03/2014 12:30

I don't like it. At all. I don't like seeing it. I only occasionally take the rush-hour train into London and nearly every time I do, there is woman doing it.

I really don't like it.

samandi · 07/03/2014 12:32

Pretty skanky IMO. I don't want your powder all over my lap thanks.

NigellasDealer · 07/03/2014 12:32

skanky, yes, that describes it perfectly imo

squoosh · 07/03/2014 12:32

Well I for one love watching people apply their makeup on public transport! I find it quite mesmerising and have to stop myself from staring at them like a creepy weirdo.

Never do it myself though. Don't want all the creepy weirdos staring at me Wink

Wishfulmakeupping · 07/03/2014 12:34

I do it- its a good use of time don't see a problem with it at all

NigellasDealer · 07/03/2014 12:35

well trust me wishful, it is gross and you are being most inconsiderate of your fellow travellers (excuse the expression)

NigellasDealer · 07/03/2014 12:36

if i see anyone doing it i kind of wish the train would jolt and they would stick the lipstick onto their cheek or even better stab themselves in the eye with the mascara wand! (jokes)

AnneWentworth · 07/03/2014 12:38

I really don't care. In fact it has never even occurred to me to think about it until today.

Bexicles · 07/03/2014 12:41

I don't mind this at all, I'm a bit nosey and like to look at the products people are using. There is a lady I occassionally see on the met who has a make up bag full of Dior and Chanel, I'm always Envy

runningonwillpower · 07/03/2014 12:49

I know little about make-up technique. I was at the back of the queue the day that lesson was delivered.

What little I know, I learned from the woman who sat opposite me on many days on the tube journey into London.

She was fascinating. No mess, no fuss, just a transformation before my eyes.

Thank you unknown woman - you introduced me to blusher.

rightsaidfrederick · 07/03/2014 12:53

I've done it before - but only when I've had to be on the train pre-7am. There are very few people on most trains at that hour, so I don't class it as anti-social in a way that I might if the train was crowded.

shopaholicbookworm · 07/03/2014 13:10

Over the years I've done make up in trains, buses, tubes, cars etc. As others have said I don't see what the problem is as long as you don't invade anyone else's personal space. Using public transport dictates a degree of tolerance of others, whether it's make up application, other people's conversations or being face to face with a copy of The Sun! Live and let live...

Snowdown · 07/03/2014 13:25

I don't do it, I don't think it's necessarily rude either. It's rude to invade someone else's space with elbows. Rude to use a messy product that might spill like loose powder. Buts smells? - pah! People wear horrible over powering perfume - I might not like it but it's not rude. And stare or don't stare it's your choice, people are always doing odd things on trains, we share the space....so I think if you are getting angry about the small stuff maybe you need to think about your anger and finding a way to reduce it rather than expect the world to change for you.

persimmon · 07/03/2014 13:34

I really can't see the problem with it, and think that those who think it's 'disgusting' are weirdos. It's not like you're waxing or flossing. I'd far rather sit near someone doing their makeup than someone eating.

nicelyneurotic · 07/03/2014 13:37

I couldn't do it as think trains are filthy. However, I quite like watching how other people do their makeup. Fascinating and I'm impressed that some women don't even need a mirror. I think some women go too far though, I've seen people moisturise then do foundation, curl eyelashes, paint nails etc.

Hate people eating on trains or spreading germs. That's a billion times worse!

PartTimePunk · 07/03/2014 14:04

When I lived abroad I used to regularly be on the same train as a bloke who would look, quite openly, at porno mags. I save my ire for situations like that. I really can't see what the fuss is about putting on make up on public transport, provided of course that your fellow passengers aren't getting splattered with foundation and powder.

diamondlizard · 07/03/2014 14:05

why on earth would it be wrong

i wouldnt bat an eyelid

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 07/03/2014 14:09

We once watched in fascination on the Paris metro as a woman did her entire makeup in this teeny mirror. The end product was a bit like a patchwork blanket.

girlynut · 07/03/2014 14:12

I have a two hour commute every morning and leave the house at 7am after having got my chldren their breakfast.

Get up earlier? Bugger that!

livlassie · 07/03/2014 14:13

I don't understand how annoyed people seem to get about this practice as i honestly cannot see the harm in it at all. Are we really all so precious that someone putting on a bit of make up is seen as a social crime? There are many important issues in this world and I'm sorry people. but this is not one of them.

WildThong · 07/03/2014 14:15

Seen much worse on my daily commute - clipping toe nails anyone
Sniffers, smelly folk, seat hoggers, parents who think it's okay if little dcs walk all over the seats (cos mud from small feet is fine obviously)
But there was one girl who used that spray on make up, that was going too far and really selfish.
I just stick my headphones on and retreat behind my kindle.
