Make up on the train

Is it acceptable to do your make up on the train .. Powder blush mascara and lip balm. Nothing gross like eyebrow plucking
I do get some funny looks. Isn't it normal/acceptable?
What's a girl to do?

You're right, scottish, I've never posted on mumsnet without claiming you're unhinged or off your rocker.

In fact, just the other day I was posting about a recipe for a pasta bake, and I couldn't even post that without adding "While waiting for the pasta to boil, remind yourself of how unhinged ScottishMummy is".

True story.

grow up

SoleSource · 09/03/2014 13:24

Have you ever confronted a make up train criminal in real life Scottish?

scottishmummy · 09/03/2014 13:25

There no grip to be gotten, make up on train is as bogging as crotch scratching, spitting
It's not better than the odious habits you cite sole
Make up on train is as gross as all the examples you Gave

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 09/03/2014 13:26

I sat next to a woman on the train yesterday applying her make up. Her elbows did not encroach on my space at any point, she didn't pull any odd faces, she didn't tug her eyes, her make up had no scent, she didn't spill anything and no one in the carriage appeared visibly distressed (or like they even noticed). Woman in question is my sister so I would have had no compunction in telling her if any of those things had happened!

Neither of us would dream of going to the toilet in front of each other or public tampon changing.

During my pregnancy, the smell of coffee has made me retch to the point of actually vomiting. I have not expected all members of the public to stop drinking coffee on trains/the street/anywhere else I might catch a whiff of it because it's not a generally offensive thing -it was my problem and mine alone. I don't expect people to modify their behaviour because of my quirks and issues which is what the people objecting to make up application seem to be doing.

People with chewing gum though - with their noisy, bovine chomping - that's unbearable! I'd ban them from public transport in a second!

scottishmummy · 09/03/2014 13:27

Do you have a point moomin, other than your concern girl my mental wellbeing?
Or are you simply name calling

SoleSource · 09/03/2014 13:27

Well I happen to disagree!

itsbetterthanabox · 09/03/2014 13:28

A person rubbing a cream onto their face is not gross like spitting or crutch grabbing. Those things leave mess, crotches are a sweaty part of the body. Can you genuinely not see the difference?

NuggetofPurestGreen · 09/03/2014 13:29

Yep applying make up to your FACE is the same as sticking your hand down your knickers and scratching your fanny or expelling bodily fluids from your mouth. I can't see any difference whatsoever.

scottishmummy · 09/03/2014 13:29

Fortunately you're on right thread lots of disagreement here sole

NuggetofPurestGreen · 09/03/2014 13:29

X-post box

NigellasDealer · 09/03/2014 13:29

haha we all have things on public transport that wind us up!
one of my personal pet hates is when people have those tiny ear phones in and their music turned up so loud that all around them is a kind of tinny musical sound that to outsiders is not quite music! i really would not mind if somebody had a loud radio or something it is that kind of 'pss psss pss' sound that is the wind up.
so what about somebody doing their make-up and listening to their mp3 player turned up too loud at the same time?

NuggetofPurestGreen · 09/03/2014 13:31

And putting in contact lenses and eating Nigella Grin

SoleSource · 09/03/2014 13:31

I use a foundation brush.

NigellasDealer · 09/03/2014 13:32

all at the same time!? now that is multi tasking!

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 09/03/2014 13:37

My point is that your views on public make-up application are extreme and bizzare.

It's a forum for opinions, is it not? Hmm

scottishmummy · 09/03/2014 13:41

And my point is your calling me clearly unhinged and off my rocker
Is somewhat disproportionate
Says a lot about you,and nothing of relevance about me

VortexOfDisaster · 09/03/2014 13:41

In fairness, I think quite a lot of people have tried to explain why they don't like it. All views have been summarily dismissed as 'not valid' or 'sounds like you have issues'.

I'm not sure why you feel you need to say you have 'not even started' in terms of being scathing?

I've been trying to say that a fundamental problem about this is demonstrating a lack of respect for the views of others.

Not accepting or acknowledging these views is part of this.

But I can see I'm flogging a dead horse!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/03/2014 13:47

The reason I feel the need to say 'I've not even started' is in direct response to you saying I've been scathing,I haven't,I have disagreed and asked you where exactly you think I got 'quite upset at the use of minging.'

If someone had given a reason such as being highly allergic to an ingredients in make up I can totally understand why they'd be cheesed off. Stating the reason as 'it's tasteless' is going to get the response of what a load of utter bollox from me.

Viviennemary · 09/03/2014 13:47

I hate it as I said upthread. It's just something that really annoys me. I don't want to see other people putting on their make-up, spraying their underarms . (yuck) Do it in the privacy of your own home or a loo. Not in public. It's something that I feel uncomfortable with and always move seats if possible.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/03/2014 13:49

And you're right,I have no respect for anyone who uses such awful phrases to a woman applying make up.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 09/03/2014 13:50

That's not really fair, vortex. Plenty of people have commented saying it doesn't bother them, without rubbishing the views of those who say it does bother them.

And you can't really be surprised people don't like being called 'minging' or 'bogging' or 'vile', can you?

I don't wear makeup often enough to bother doing it on the train, but I also don't care if others do it. So I have very little invested and can see pretty clearly why some are a bit offended.

Of course, it's presumably absolutely fine to be offensive on the net, and quite different from other kinds of offensiveness like, y'know, putting makeup on in the train ...?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/03/2014 13:50

Spraying under arms IS inconsiderate. It's stinky and can aggravate asthma.

VortexOfDisaster · 09/03/2014 14:06

LRD you are absolutely right, and my comments were not directed at everyone. There were some very fair views put forward on both sides, and funny ones too. Whatever I think myself I could see what people were saying.

I have felt, though, that both Dame and Nuggethave been overly dismissive of any views put forward that did not agree with theirs.

Dame - when people have expressed views, you've said things along the lines of 'bizarre', 'look out the window then', 'you have issues', 'that's not valid' etc. Some people might say that is being scathing. My reading of your comments has led me to feel that you are not willing to listen to any views that you feel might conflict with your own.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/03/2014 14:10

I've said 'you have issues?' Not sure about that, but will read back.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/03/2014 14:19

Some might say looking out the window is a sensible suggestion if you are focusing on something you don't like.
