Done it...

OP posts:
lalsy · 10/03/2014 16:57

MI, I think the but but but......could be the motto of many families! I'm sure L6 or not doesn't matter, but I think dc who have never had to work particularly hard to do well can find it difficult to accept that they may need to, and that it is worthwhile, and build up the stamina and resilience needed...so but but but it is.

wilbur · 10/03/2014 17:03

C'est moi, Hattie! I knew there was someone else on there that I should connect with, and my detective work led me to you. Smile

Talking of FB - Blackduck, I have a link to share from a great friend who runs brilliant scenic art and design courses in Edinburgh in the summer hols, he is an established stage designer and a graduate of the University We Have In Common. Any chance you or your dp could put the word out to any students who would be interested? Anyone else with artsy, theatre-y young (or old) folk looking for a fun summer school, let me know and I will send details.

I am very meh today - come down after lovely weekend, I think, and work a bit stressful atm. I will have to force myself to keep fit later.

bigTillyMint · 10/03/2014 17:04

I think it's WilburWink#

Yes, MI, that's what happened with DD. That's why I'm not convinced pushing them to get a higher SATs level is a big deal. Different with GCSE's/A'levels as they are final external exams, but SATs are really for the school. If she is able, the secondary school will see how able she is IYSWIM

wilbur · 10/03/2014 17:06

Agree with Lalsy - a small degree of Tiger Mother applied with love and concern for general work ethic rather than a specific result is worth doing, IMHO. Especially when it comes to music where the rewards of a bit of effort are so enjoyable.

motherinferior · 10/03/2014 17:24

I am always conflicted about music, after being bullied to practise. Having said that the deal with DD2 is hey, kid, we are paying for this - it's up to you if you keep going with it or not, but if you want to play sax/trumpet, you have to practise. Moaning and flumping regardless.

The good thing about a stonking hangover on a lovely Sunday is at least Monday is bearable Grin

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 18:00

Ah - hello Wilbur. I think I've got everybody now apart from Crem who is a FB resister. What about NU69?

Got braces on my teeth today - not entirely vanity I have an occluded tooth which has sat in my gum for 30:years and is starting to play up. I have the choice of an operation to dig it out or braces to try to pull it down. I'd rather have a real tooth so I'm trying what should have been done as a child with no guarantee of success given my age.

In realise my tooth trials are relatively minor given everybody else's lives at the moment.

DD1 has announced she would like to go to Venice w friends this summer. Apparently her Italian friend's relative has a spare apartment going beggingHmmHmm

lalsy · 10/03/2014 18:18

Hatty, dd too is off to Europe with friends this summer [gulp and tears hair emoticon]. One of them appears to have done extensive research about travel insurance, which is the only aspect I find reassuring.

Both dc in big grumps.....

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 18:28

Lalsy - I'm just wondering who is expected to finance this venture. I quite fancy an apartment in Venice myself.

NUFC69 · 10/03/2014 18:42

Hatty, like Crem I am another FB resister, but thanks for thinking of me.

No advice from me regarding children and schooling; it's all too long ago. However I do think that if they have the example of parents working hard and getting results, it encourages them.

It's been a glorious day of sunshine here but I am suffering from sciatica so the planned bike ride didn't take place. Sad

DH and I prefer going out with other people, particularly when we go out for a meal, otherwise we just eat if you see what I mean. And, of course, now we're retired we see a l o t of each other anyway. Which reminds me of a neighbour who said she knew she had to find something for her husband to do when he followed her outside and was handing her the pegs as she hung out the washing!

lalsy · 10/03/2014 18:52

Hatty, I know! I think we are (expected to finance).

dd's A2s go on till nearly the end of June, and she has another commitment before this holiday, and we don't want her not to come on whatever family holiday we squeeze in so that she can earn money to pay us back for the holiday we didn't go on.......they are at a funny in between age I guess (wearily reaching for shrry after 2 days of stupid arguments with dd).

QueenQueenie · 10/03/2014 18:57

Hattie, are we FB friends?

QueenQueenie · 10/03/2014 18:57

Or Hatty even...

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 18:58

I did point out that we will be broke as we will be financing her university and she reckons a little bar job in the summer might cover that - yeah right.

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 19:04

QQ - yes I think I have you - you have short grey hair on cartoon strips right? There is one person who comes up on "people you might know" who is definitely a crepey and I can't work out for the life of me which one. I have MI, Herbs, BD, Rudy, BTM and definitely Mrs S. I now have Wilbur and I think I have Addle or Alto - I think this is where confusion is setting in.

I have to confess, I'm a bit of a FB lurker and only post about once a year - life obviously not interesting enough.Smile

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 19:05

Ooh - Lalsy - are you on FB?

lalsy · 10/03/2014 19:22

Yes, I am, I am on a mountain with other people. I think I am only friends with addle and MI at the moment (not v active on FB but do quite like it).

beachyhead · 10/03/2014 19:23

Might be me.... Black and grey top with glass behind? GrinGrin

beachyhead · 10/03/2014 19:38

Think I found Lalsy, but not sure if I can find Hattie!!!!

NUFC69 · 10/03/2014 19:40

Oh and I have just remembered my DD going on her first teen holiday; can't remember whether it was post GCSEs or A Levels, she was flying on the Monday night, on Sunday night we discovered that her passport had expired! We hadn't realised that at sixteen you needed an updated one. She and DH drove to Liverpool, managed to get a new passport and then get back in time to fly at 8.30 pm. Shudders at the memory.

hattymattie · 10/03/2014 19:42

OK - who just sent me a friend request - is that you Beachy (DT)? - if so - you are the lady who always crops up that I couldn't identify. Lalsy - I'm mystified.

motherinferior · 10/03/2014 19:45

Do I have Beachy?

Where is Auriga? Have we left her somewhere? Am faintly concerned.

beachyhead · 10/03/2014 19:47

It is, but I got confused as you are also on top of a mountain with friends Grin must be a popular crepey pose Grin

beachyhead · 10/03/2014 19:50

Yes MI, you have me...

lalsy · 10/03/2014 20:02

I am on my mountain with family Smile. We are all whooping with glee on a small pile of stones dressed entirely in black (we do know how to have fun in my family). No crepey-like suggestions leaping out at me (but some volunteering organisation in Southwark seems to feel I don't have enough friends and suggests loads, so I can't see the wood for the trees)

bigTillyMint · 10/03/2014 20:12

Aha! Found you lalsy and have sent friend request!
