This space is for anyone who wants to talk about perfumes - ask for recommendations, tell us which scent you are wearing today (=SOTD), list your favorites...

Apatite you may have guessed my next move. CSP Vanille Extreme is fading and becoming a lot nicer.
A story about ethylmaltol here - it's a fascinating blog too.

Frugal, I really don't like the idea of smelling of popcorn from a cheap motel! Not really the glamorous, sensuous image I'd like to promote. I was testing perfumes in town today. I have SL Gingembre on one wrist & SL Vanilla on the other. I was impressed that there were lots of scents in my local Harvey Nichols which are mentioned on this thread. I need more wrists though!

florascotia · 13/03/2014 13:42

SOTD = Chamade, a golden oldie and possibly the suddenly-remembered springlike scent I was asking about earlier in this thread. (Thanks for recommendation, Frugal.) Begins strongly aldehyde (too much, at first) but gets greener and more floral. Better sniffed from far away - ie with wrists at typing distance - than close up, I think. Am not a fan of sweet hyacinth but this is clean hyacinth and wet rose balanced with bitter smoky resinous sharpness and softened by typical Guerlain powder. Clever, eh!

Have just been sent a sample of La Petite Robe Noire, as a gift. I know I don't like this. Would anyone care for it? Please PM me if so.

OneLittleLady · 13/03/2014 13:44

I'd like to try the sample if no one else has asked Flora? No worries if you've already been pm'd Smile

teta · 13/03/2014 13:46

I've placed my first samples order with Bloom.Several Rosine Rosy ones and some woody green citrus scents.I'm so excited, and love the fact I don't have to pay for delivery within the UK.Are there any more UK shops that make it this easy to order decants?SOTD is Tuesdays Uraras Tokyo.I meant to try Kiss by the Fireside but its a beautiful clear sunny day and the blossom is unfurling and I want to smell pretty.

Stokey · 13/03/2014 14:04

Snap Teta - was going to go for Tauer ADDM but this seemed more appropriate.

Not sure if I love it though it is very spring-like. There is a powdery violet especially at first that I struggle with, nice & mellow by lunch though.

teta · 13/03/2014 14:26

I love that violet. It smells of fresh green woods to me ( always thought violets smelt like Parma violets before ).

florascotia · 13/03/2014 14:27

You'd be welcome, OneLittleLady, just PM me with an address.

Teta- I've always found Scent and Sensibility very helpful and their samples (not decants) are generously sized at 2 ml : www.scent-and-sensibility.co.uk/ Their postage and packing is the same (£2, I think) however many samples you purchase.

OneLittleLady · 13/03/2014 14:29

Pm sent flora Thanks

FrugalFashionista · 13/03/2014 16:37

Has anyone done this - color analysis for perfumistas, in a way?

OP posts:
cosikitty · 14/03/2014 13:43

Thanks frugal, I did that and it suggested Rien by Etat Libre D'Orange. Not one I have ever sampled, will have to look for it somewhere. Also Black Angel by Mark Buxton, not heard of him before?

Stokey · 14/03/2014 14:26

SOTD SL Iris silver mist by accident. Finally got my STC samples today and managed to spill this one all over my hand, dressing table & dressing gown, bit of a waste, but tbh 0.5ml is tiny.

cressetmama · 14/03/2014 15:26

SOTD is Vetiver Tonka, light and very comforting for an overcast day. I also tried the link Frugal provided [thank you] and it looks interesting. However, I also got recommended an ELDO and Mark Buxton selection, so Cosi and I may have similar tastes. Other recommendations included some names I don't know at all.

FrugalFashionista · 14/03/2014 16:05

I created a profile at Nose. It's clever concept but seems a bit random. I set three unadventurous Chanels (No. 5, No. 19 and La Pausa) as 'perfumes that I wear' - they don't have a perfumista setting 'I wear whatever I'm given and change my perfume twice a day' Wink

I got pretty exotic suggestions - a peony perfume (urgh - have given away a sample of it unsniffed), one of the Costume Nationals (may still have a sample somewhere), a Villoresi (also urgh and given away) and a Biehl perfume I have sniffed and forgotten. The only potential hit was Iris de Nuit from Heeley but frankly I cannot remember what it smells like either

Mark Buxton is a modern niche perfumer who has done some good 'fumes for Comme des Garcons. I remember having met him briefly when he was promoting a perfume called 'Sexual Healing' I have no recollection what it smelled like Wink

SOTDs today are deja-sentis. Gypsy Water from Byredo = fleeting and watered-down Douce Amere. Trayee= Safran Troublant.

Housewife2010 · 14/03/2014 16:23

Hello Perfumistas
Frugal , I got a sample of Gypsy Water last week - I need to try it out. SOTD Serge Lutens Bas de Soie. I'm not sure about this. It's wearable but seems quite cold. It doesn't have the lovely warm wrist-nuzzling charm of my motel popcorn favourite. It reminds me a bit of CB I Hate Perfume's "Walking in the Air". I definitely prefer something warmer.

FuzzLightbeard · 14/03/2014 16:47

Nose has recommended me Semma by Odin, never heard of it before but from the notes looks like something I would enjoy.

SOTD was Cristalle EDT this morning but it's now gone quite chilly so have moved to Ambre Sultan.

FrugalFashionista · 14/03/2014 18:32

Housewife Bas de Soie is one of the coldest and scariest perfumes I know! For me, it's a 'conceptual' perfume - an experience, not always even pleasant and often far from wearable, but often extremely memorable.

Sorry about erratic spelling. Have survived a monster workday and a mega playdate

Oh and feel free to any type of perfume you are wearing here - ordinary, extraordinary, budget, splurge, something you are repeat-wearing day in day out. I often talk about exotic stuff because I have a huge amount of samples and tend to experiment in the spring. But then I have long quieter periods when I repeat-wear favorites (like Chanel No. 5 or Aqua Allegoria Nerolia Bianca) for weeks. I really enjoy those periods of monogamy, that's when you really get to know a perfume and all ots nuances...

Fuzz I love Ambre Sultan but don't wear it as often as I should - a shame because it's one of my favorite ambers!

I have been wearing Tuesday's gin garden no 2 today. It is based on the botanicals in gin, so is heavy on the juniper but I can also pick up black pepper and other spices as well as citrus notes. It is quite nice in the sunshine. It has had good lasting power as well.

However, it has now gone colder and I am out this evening so I shall peruse my newly arrived samples from the perfumed court and wear something warmer.

Housewife2010 · 14/03/2014 18:50

Frugal - I like the idea that I'm wearing something cold & scary! But, I don't think it will become a regular! It's not really the sort of image I want to project! What do you think of CB I Hate Perfume? I wan't impressed.

clb · 14/03/2014 19:06

SOTD is Jour d' Hermès, one of my faves: so uplifting. Grapefruit and flowers; very long-lasting. I bought a bundle of samples cheaply on eBay but will probably buy a FB when they're finished.

Must remember to try the newish Extrait and Absolu edp next time I'm somewhere with a Hermès concession.

OneLittleLady · 14/03/2014 19:20

SOTD is Prada Infusion De Tubereuse. big floral on opening, powdery on it's dry down on me. Like being wrapped in a cloud Grin

ScienceRocks · 15/03/2014 00:39

Went for love, tears and surrender by killan this evening. Loved it to start with, full of lily of the valley and jasmine with oriental undertones. But it faded so quickly that i was left disappointed Sad glad I only had a sample and not a full bottle.

Apatite1 · 15/03/2014 10:24

SOTD is modern muse by Estée Lauder. Going house hunting and don't want to scare the nice estate agent lady :)

FrugalFashionista · 15/03/2014 10:47

Snap Science Love and Tears here too and I got exactly 3 hours from it! Jasmine is difficult for me, and lily of the valley even more so, but this perfume is lovely and very well done. Here is the interview pf the perfumer, Calice Becker - she does radiant flowers like on one else. I have the darker counterpart, A la nuit, but undecided what to wear next. Something longwearing or should I let Tears fade and go out for a walk and some errands and reserve my skin for sampling something new...

Ah frugal, I have a sample of iris de nuit. Not wild about it, it's v soft and one dimensional, mostly musky violets. Wore it the other day but probably won't again any time soon.

Today is carthusia IO Capri, quite strong mint in this, was too much during the summer but much more integrated in this spring weather. Low key minty floral, not getting any fig or green tea...
