I'm listening to Pam Ayres on Radio 4. I'm finding her quite funny - I must be getting seriously crepeySmile

herbaceous · 07/02/2014 11:50

I've always liked Pam Ayres. Though don't admit it to DP. He's a fan of 'proper poetry', which I can't stand.

As for the Thames Barrier, I think it's been up and down like a whore's drawers for some time now, as sea levels have started to rise.

hattymattie · 07/02/2014 11:53

Herbs GrinGrin at whores drawers.

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 12:38

My new Vidavida mini-satchel has arrived. I have positioned it next to my big Scaramanga satchel and taken their picture. I don't get out much Grin

Herbs, the Inferiorettes regularly berate me for the state I've left the planet in for them. Bit like me with them about their rooms. Seriously, it worries the crap out of me too.

NUFC69 · 07/02/2014 13:17

We have lived here for over 30 years but it has only been in the last 5/6 we've had problems with flooding. A couple of my friends have been flooded twice; one acquaintance has actually had to abandon her home never to go back. Fortunately she was insured. My worst experience was Thunder Thursday from a couple of summers ago, although I have been in a hurricane abroad.

CointreauVersial · 07/02/2014 13:21

Snap, Hattymattie. There was a strange dripping noise emanating from the living room just as we were trying to exit the house this morning, and it appears our blasted shower is leaking too. There has been a suspicious patch on the ceiling for a while, but no visible water - until today. Angry

We propped a bucket underneath, and the drips slowed down, but I'm a little concerned I'm going to come home to a ceiling-less living room. No idea where the leak is coming from, either - there don't seem to be any unsealed bits, so I'm going to have to do some experiments with buckets and so forth to identify the problem. As if I didn't enough enough to do.

The bridge to DD2's school was just about passable this morning. It's such a tiny wee river, normally. I'm just bored with it all.

Crem - big congrats to your DD! Very impressive. My DN (who is 12) is a beautiful singer, and is collecting silverware; it's a lovely skill to have, particularly for her, as she isn't particularly sporty/brainy, unlike her twin.

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 13:30

I am writing about poo.

herbaceous · 07/02/2014 13:32

I'm writing about Brentford.

Anyone remember the advert for Brentford Nylons?

bigTillyMint · 07/02/2014 13:50

Oh yes, Herbs!

MI hope you have posted your satchels pix on your FB page so I can see them! and Envy at the birthday breakfast.

hattymattie · 07/02/2014 14:09

CV ours is also over the living room - we already had a cracked ceiling which is why we had it redone. Now it appears to be leaking out the sidesAngry.

MIHmmGrin.

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 14:19

I will upload when I've checked how.

I should probably explain am writing about children and digestive disorders. Or, as we say in the jolly tones of parenting mags 'uncovering the inner workings of your offspring'. Ho yes.

cremolafoam · 07/02/2014 14:21

Hope Stropps is ok
Mrs S is strangely absent from roll-call this morning. Peut-être un petit 'angover?

Herbs dd sang bloody hard IMHO .

Stropperella · 07/02/2014 14:22

Crem, wow and congrats to your dd! How wonderful!

CV, oh no, you really don't need water inside the house as well.

MI, I do not envy you the impending royal visit.

Re: GP - it went much as expected. I told him (locum) how I felt and he gave me a prescription for the same dose I was on before all this started and, because I insisted that I wanted to try and deal with the root cause rather than continue masking it with prescriptions, gave me a leaflet to self-refer for "talking therapy".

The locum told me that I can basically expect to feel horrible for an unspecified length of time because I reduced my dose (as per GP instructions) for 5 days. I guess I just have to wait it out. He wasn't exactly encouraging about the prospects of me finding a "cure" in general. I've been told a few times that I need to accept that I have to live within my limitations. It's just a bummer that that has major economic implications.

I worry for dd because she is so similar in so many respects. She has failed to make it into school today, for some spurious reason.

You have all been immensely kind and supportive and have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you.

At least the sun is shining today and the dog didn't have to do any paddling. :)

Stropperella · 07/02/2014 14:23

ps: I am writing about extreme weather events in Austria. Grin

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 14:30

I have had an email from MrsS: will leave details to her, but suffice it to say there are some situations where matricide should be a duty rather than an offence.

Stropps, I have to say that doesn't really sound good enough (though have been there and know how hard it is to get through to the professionals). Is it worth having a chat with Mind or suchlike, to find a way through the maze?

Blackduck · 07/02/2014 14:50

Brentford Nylons - another blast from the past! Nylon sheets and a nightie = blue sparks and static...

cremo - well done to DD.

Stropps - ho hum - that doesn't sound helpful at all......

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 15:03

I have finished the poo (so to speak). Merely awaiting a Gut Expert to talk to on Monday.

lalsy · 07/02/2014 15:09

Stropps, the self-refer to talking therapies is what we have in this area - I gather it works OK, as you get triaged by people who know the whole landscape, and what particular services are available, rather than who/what your GP happens to know/have kept up to date with (GPs can refer to it too - but the outcome is the same, you talk to someone who know the local provision and they they sort it). Please do consider making the call. There will doubtless be a waiting list once you have done the initial bit, so you won't be bounced into anything you are not sure about. It may be about learning techniques to manage things, rather than a cure, but that can be transforming.

lalsy · 07/02/2014 15:11

MI, I can sink lower than that - back in the day, I covered the use of carbon composites in penile implants.

motherinferior · 07/02/2014 15:14

We're so S&B on this thread...

bigTillyMint · 07/02/2014 15:22

Stropps, great that you've got the meds

CointreauVersial · 07/02/2014 16:40

I spent the day writing about health & safety achievements for our website and analysing the company mobile phone bill. Yawn.

Ceiling is still intact, and dripping has stopped, which makes me suspect defective shower seals/grout rather than dodgy pipework. I will get busy with a sealant gun over the weekend; the plastering will have to wait. Can I claim on the insurance, do you think?

I just found a half eaten box of champagne truffles in the back of the cupboard and ate them all. One after another, chomp chomp. Blush Blush TGIF !

bigTillyMint · 07/02/2014 17:18

Champagne truffles, yummmm!

cremolafoam · 07/02/2014 17:21

Mnmn champagne truffles.

Just to join in with the general leakage woes, our dishwasher has given up the ghost with a spectacular flash and fused the whole house.Angry

BASTARD dishwashers. Also showers. The door fell off our shower the other day. DP has replaced it with a curtain which sticks clammily to your bum.

Appear to have sold another feature idea which will help keep wolf from door. Frugal Recycling is, as ever, my motto (ie I've done some of it for another publication already). Freelancing is weird. One minute you're facing yet another rejection, the next an idea you casually cast out has been snaffled.
