You are not a cruel mother Stropps. Rather you are teaching him the importance of delayed gratification. ..

lalsy · 12/02/2014 13:19

Stropps, that sounds completely terrifying. (I don't mind trudging, but fast and slippy - oh no!)

herbaceous · 12/02/2014 13:20

Tempest has now reached the capital, though I'd imagine the damage will be limited to some ruined brollies and damp Metros.

Have DS's 'parents evening' today. Well, a 10-minute chat at 3.45. It's only a seven-minute walk, but the deluge will be at its height, so I'll take the car. But it's resident's parking only, apart from a few 30-minute slots, and have to get DS at 3.15, so I forsee a while of warden-dodging, while feeding DS a sustaining snack in a steamy car.

He's now decided he 'hates' playing with the boys (his previous favourite activity, he claimed) as they are 'too rough'. Glad he feels able to opt out of stuff if he doesn't like it.

herbaceous · 12/02/2014 13:21

Oh, and much roffling over Stropps' description of her crossGerman country skiing. Sounds grim, frankly.

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 13:33

Stropps, excellent news! They have been amazingly fast - make the most of it tomorrow!

Lalsy, the other kind is cross-country skiing which seems to involve sliding along the flat and hardly ever going down. And my French friend does some sort of extreme cross-country where they attach these special skins to their ski's to grip the snow as they go uphill (and I mean really uphill!)
Stropp's cross-country train experiences sound, well, very German. And scary.

The wind and rain is sooooo depressing. I am praying hard for at least a little bit of sun in the Alps.

herbaceous · 12/02/2014 13:44

I'm sitting in my study, all windows shut and heater on, with a scarf OVER MY HEAD and can still feel a draught on my face. Curse Victorian houses.

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 13:52

HerbsGrin That is a great picture!

motherinferior · 12/02/2014 14:04

WIBU not to pick up DD2 from school? In my defence I do have an urgent editing job coming in, nothing to do with the weather, honest...

hattymattie · 12/02/2014 14:49

Stropp's Grin at German grannies. I have to go skiing in two weeks time. DH is born and bred in the Alps and has been skiing since he was 4. My DC's all now ski much faster than me and now all the family waits at the bottom for me to catch up.

I loved the Olympic downhill skiing on the bumps with somersault in the air thrown in. Speaking as one who normally gets stuck on top of the bump, I can appreciate what brilliant athletes these people are.

herbaceous · 12/02/2014 14:56

I haven't been skiing for donkeys years. Since I was much fitter, and about two stone lighter. Only really 'clicked' on the third holiday, when I really started to love it. But, like BTM, prefer gliding down blue runs than struggling down reds. I don't suppose DP could ever be persuaded to go, but DS might rather enjoy it...

Perhaps we should have a crepey skiing holiday! With copious quantities of wine and cake from, ooh, about lunchtime onwards.

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 15:01

Surely she could walk home, MI?!

Hatty, whereabouts are you going? That's what happens when we ski together too. I think there are very few crepey women who like to ski fast!

I only ski mornings as I couldn't possibly leave my non-skiing friend (her family come too) alone all dayWink And FWIW, I think the walking we do in the afternoons is far more energetic than the skiing!

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 15:53

Just got home to find a card on the mat. From someone I used to work with/know about 20 years ago. Am a bit surprised.

How would she know my married name and address?

Must be that a mutual friend passed them on?

Very, very strangeConfused

motherinferior · 12/02/2014 16:06

Oh, an on-foot pickup, BTM! I walk down to the school gate. As indeed I did as copy hadn't quite arrived yet.

We did walk. She was in a filthy mood but I hadn't been out of the house otherwise, as was too damn knackered to do third Ladyjog in as many days and the forecast had been awful for this morning.

hattymattie · 12/02/2014 16:26

BTM - Valmoral - it's nearest the inlaws. Is it a good or bad thing, renewed contact with the friend?

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 16:38

Well, TBH, she wasn't really a friend. More an occasional colleague. We were never close and I had to wrack my brains a bit to remember the nameConfused

bigTillyMint · 12/02/2014 16:42

And Hatty, I read that like Balmoral! We are north of you at small resort near MorzineWink

hattymattie · 12/02/2014 17:10

yup - it should read ValmorelBlush don't know what's wrong with me this week. Does the menopause affect spelling?

Stropperella · 12/02/2014 18:32

I am in shock after ds's parent's eve: it was an extraordinarily positive experience; not a single negative. I know enough to treasure the moment. Grin

herbaceous · 12/02/2014 18:50

Things are looking up, Stropps!

DS's too was v positive. Has achieved all the targets for the term, already, before half-term. Is acknowledged as mega-reader, and I have to start doing comprehension with him. His handwriting is a bit variable (but as he couldn't even write his name in September, I don't care). But overall he's generally wonderful, and I 'should be very proud'.

motherinferior · 12/02/2014 18:52

Wine to both of you and Cake to the boys.

The report I am editing (warning, Lalsy and Addle - it's from the same organisation as before) is about maternal employment. It concludes that (a) lots of mothers would like to work more than they feel is possible at the moment (b) subsidised childcare would help (c) this would actually pay off in terms of public expenditure in any case.

No shit Sherlock.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/02/2014 18:57

We have DD1's parents' day the week after next. I had a look at her grades last night. She either gets As or Fs in maths - how is this even possible? No Bs, Cs or Ds, just As and Fs. Confused

Blackduck · 12/02/2014 20:21

MI - indeed no shit...

MrsS - I kind of like the A or F approach..... It's kind of 'I'm not wasting time' maybe??

cremolafoam · 12/02/2014 20:42

Stropps excellent news about tomorrow. That's great.Smile

We are sitting by candlelight as The Tempest has hit us at ramming speed and knocked off the electric. Dd is swotting by an oil lamp like its 1834 and dh is doing something to a generator. You could not go outside if your life depended on it. And it might as we are almost out of logsConfused
Welcome to the Underwater Kingdom. I can hear wheelie bins dancing down the street with horrific thuds. Eek.

Blackduck · 12/02/2014 20:58

Dp spent 6 hours travelling to do an 1.30 meeting... 2 hours doing about a usual 20 mins - this is because of blocked roads/bridges/flooded towns etc......

Not fun

motherinferior · 12/02/2014 20:59

How...Little House on the Prairie, Crem.

I rather like the A-F approach too, though realise it depends on her having a good day.
