TALL tantrum!

CestelloAnnunciation · 28/01/2014 15:14

I am so fucking sick of there being such a limited range of clothes that fit me (I'm 6 ft tall, a size 12).

I hate LTS (yuck!), Next Tall (frumpy, badly made) and New Look/ Topshop/Dotty P's paltry, cheap little selections.

I need choice. I need well made clothes that fit. I need dresses and skirts that hit my knee, not look like long tops. I am late 30s - I cant be wearing little skater dresses made for women who are 5'5.

Waaaaaaah. I hate my entire wardrobe and its because I am wearing clothes made for a woman a half foot shorter. I just want to scream!

Any tips, for the love of GOD?!

No sympathy from me I'm afraid. I'm 5 ft nothing, so have the opposite problem. To be fair, I think there's more petite choices. Hope you get some useful replies!

Extremewife · 28/01/2014 15:30

I am not quite as tall as you - but this week I have had a bloody nightmare with tights / leggings - why do they get wider as they get taller what to thin (ish) tall people and short wider people do???

Longleggedlovely · 28/01/2014 16:01

A couple of gems that I have discovered recently as a fellow tall girl - ASOS are allegedly starting a Tall range from April and ExtremeWife, Boots tights are the best! Absolutely long enough for my 36" pins and come up lovely and high unlike M&S.....

I cannot wait for ASOS!!

Passthecake30 · 28/01/2014 17:30

Are you me? I'm 6ft and a size 12, 39yrs old

Have you found anything at all lately? ? There have been a couple of bits in lts and next tall but I have to send back a lot of crap to discover them!

Roll on summer and cropped capris ha ha

Shopgirl1 · 28/01/2014 21:10

I'm 36, 6 ft and a size 12 too.
It's hard, but for jeans I steer away from high street chains and go with jeans brands. Diesel do some of their jeans in 34 length, I have to try them on but depending on the cut they can be long enough. I have a pair of tall seven for all mankind jeans too that work well.
I also recently discovered hush leggings, they do a long length that is very good, expensive, but worth it.
Coats are a problem for me, sleeves are often too short, but I got a nice biker style jacket in gap recently in their tall section.

Lucked · 28/01/2014 21:21

You have my sympathy and I am only 5 10 and feel the same. It isn't just about the length of skirts and trousers, I can't buy anything belted because the belt which is meant to be on the waist ends up under my boobs, jumpers and tops barely reach the top of my jeans and the rise on trousers is all wrong.

I am having major problems since giving birth 3 months ago as I have developed a muffin top and all the advice is to buy high rise jeans but they aren't high rise on me!!!

Will look out for ASOS

My best jeans have been Hudson but that was several years ago.

pinkflaming0 · 28/01/2014 21:30

I'm only 5'10" but have long legs and am a size 8 (age almost 48).

I buy from

Next Tall - at least they do 8T many places stop at size 10. I find they're OK for basics like the long sleeved t-shirt I'm wearing today but colour choice is limited in tall sizes. Also have a few dresses - the waist is in the right place and they're long enough. Also have a couple of jackets. Tall sizes can sell out so fast though I have had some sale bargains. Trousers are long enough but not the right shape for me.

M&S - long length leggings, jeggings and some slim leg trousers are long enough for me (didn't used to be so must be getting longer) but not wide or boot leg (ankle swingers!). Skirts don't come in long enough lengths for smart work wear as I need a size 6 and these only come in short length (I am NOT a size 6!).

Hush - jumper dresses to wear with leggings

Duo boots for longer length knee boots - their website actually gives the boot height not just heel height wish other online retailers would do this.

Gap - their tall range seems to be expanding, have had a couple of jumpers and tops. My favourite jeans only come in 34" length max though but are just about OK as they are slim leg.

LTS - all I've bought there recently is a 'scuba' dress that I had to take in because only start at size 10 but it's stunning and lovely to have a body con dress that's a decent length so not tarty looking. Have worn it loads. In the past I've had some basics like jumpers in the sale from them. Many items are frumpy or just weird tho!

I agree that you have to sift thru a lot of shite to find the right items. I shop mainly online so am on first name terms with the lady at the Post Office!

PersonalClown · 28/01/2014 21:35

I'll join the scream.
I'm a 6ft-er but I have a 36 inch inside leg. Most tall jeans are ankle swingers on me.

I gave up on long dresses years ago. Leggings are just about ok but only because I have them inside calf high DMs.

MrsDavidBowie · 28/01/2014 22:01

Screaming here too.
6 feet, 34-35 ins inside leg, size 12-14.
And 53.

Sick of no choice...black bootleg trousers or legging anyone?
Cheap nasty fabrics, yes you LTS.

MotionCity · 28/01/2014 22:06

Yep, so with you on this. 5ft11, 36" inside leg. And why-oh-why do so many shops seem to assume there are no tall women who need a size 8?! Worst offenders for this seem to be LTS and Gap - I love Gap clothes, but their tall range starts in a size small, which seems to be a generous size 12, and, bafflingly, much bigger than size small in their regular range.

spots · 28/01/2014 22:10

yep, I now make my own stuff whenever possible because the bliss of well-fitting clothes is so worth the work. LTS have gone off the scale in mingingness recently... I'm sue they used to sell good things at least sometimes...

Apatite1 · 28/01/2014 22:11

I hear Baukjen dresses are very long, I've ordered their two shortest ones as I am a midget.

CheeseTMouse · 28/01/2014 22:17

I am 6'2 and don't own any trousers, other than some mens jeans (that don't really fit, if truth be told). I was amazingly lucky with my maternity jeans as mamas and papas long jeans were actually long!

I stick to skirt suits for work and dresses most of the rest of the time. Not ideal, but I get so cross when shopping and nothing fits, I end up giving up. Very irritating.

MrsDavidBowie · 29/01/2014 08:36

I posted a few weeks ago about how Next Tall range have got a much smaller range of trousers than before...yes they have basic ones, but none of the more nteresting contemporary ones which seem to be available in petite.
Esprit do 34 and 36 inside leg in selected, but online.

And I assume we have big feet oo? Another gripe.

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2014 09:14

Next tall have also gone mad with their sizing, things I've recently ordered are about 2 sizes too big, v annoying when I have to pay postage to exchange them!

Luckily my feet are mere 6s...thou they look long and skinny. I have trouble with boots as they flap about my skinny shins, I have some duos and hunters at least.

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2014 09:15

spots what do u make? ?

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/01/2014 09:29

I make dresses, jackets, skirts. Takes less time than finding fitting ones to buy. Casual clothes are either tunic and leggings or from gap online which has quite a good tall range.

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2014 09:49

Wow, impressed. Wish I was handy with a sewing machine.

Ive not foundanything decent on gap online...just cotton shirts and plain trousers. ..will have to look again to find these coats and leggings people talk of!

As for coats. ..I have a didrikson that goes past my wrists and down to mid thigh which was appreciated this morning!

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/01/2014 11:02

Pass its less impressive than it sounds. I have a very basic machine and only do patterns labelled "easy" Grin

This should take you to the landing page for Gap's tall range. I noticed its for women 5'9" and under but I assume that's because they copied the text from petite. Gap isn't very exciting, its fairly plain sensible casual wear. It suits my style though.

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2014 12:21

Gap has 20% off today!

Maybe I will have to order some bits and get ready to return it no doubt

JellyCurls · 29/01/2014 12:35

I will join the tantrum too if that's allowed, 5'11" and size 12/14. Really struggling for clothes as post baby (16weeks ago) body is not exactly toned. Often think I should make my own but have no idea where to start and with 3 kids I don't have much time.

Still trying to get long winter boots but skinny size 8/9 feet don't exist allegedly.

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2014 12:44

Jelly have you tried tunics from white stuff? I have a couple that I wear with skinny jeans or leggings.

gilmoregirl · 29/01/2014 13:11

I am not as tall as many of you are but find it hard to find clothes with shoulders/waists/sleeves in the right proportions.

Dorothy Perkins do some good tall stuff - their Eden jeggings are good under tunics.

I tend to wear dresses mostly as easier fit wise. My current favourite is a boden cord dress. I have it in regular fit as I like short length on me but it comes in long. I think it is called monmatre at the moment.

Also have Gap jeans - skinny jeans worn in boots mean that the length isn't so important!

Skinheadmermaid · 29/01/2014 15:14

I feel your pain, i'm not massively tall at 5.8 but i have a broad muscular build. (My shoulders are only 2inches less wide then my 6ft dp)
I CAN NEVER FIND ANY SLEEVES LONG ENOUGH IN WOMENS SHOPS.
They strain at the shoulder, on my biceps (i do weights but i'm hardly arnie) and the sleeves are always 5 inches too short. I have to either wear short sleeves or buy any jumpers/sweatshirts in the mens section. Why can you get longer length jeans but not tops?!
-bursts into tears and flails orangutang arms in despair-

Northumberlandlass · 29/01/2014 15:47

6ft & size 14 here.
I agree with everything you've said.

ASOS Tall ??? brilliant.
Have you looked at Gap Tall online - got some jeans from there last month, they are pretty perfect for me.
