Long hair...When is too long?

pigleychez · 25/01/2014 21:04

My hair grows quickly and is currently down to the small of my back. I booked in for a cut next weekend but not sure whether to go for a trim or shorter (shoulder length ish)

I love the look of a bob just above the shoulders but my hair has a natural wave to it so would take quite a bit of styling each morning to look good. I have neither the time or enthusiasm for this!

Do you think very long hair on a 32 year old looks ok? I worry that it makes me look young. Should be a good thing but im quite young looking anyway! I want to look sophisticated!

Anyone suggest any styles?

Regardless of age, anything past the bra strap is too long imo.

randomfemale · 25/01/2014 21:14

Well I clicked on your profile to see if there was a pic of you with your long hair. Oh my - your DD's are just gorgeous.

I've had quite long hair all my life (47) but Dec 12 had it cut into a very short bob. Had loads of complements but my hair is naturally very wavy/curly so have spent the past 12 months growing it again. My saviour (mumsnet purchase) was Babyliss Big Hair. I now can leave the house for the first time ever looking (and feeling) sophisticated.

However, if you fancy a change, go for it. Hair grows pretty quickly Smile

Oh you lucky lucky thing! Probably not what you want to hear but if I was you, I'd just go for a trim at the most! Not very adventurous I know but long hair is in my experience easier to maintain/ style than shorter hair.

I don't think it matters what age you are either!

xxMrsCxx · 25/01/2014 21:18

Absolutely fine at 32 I would say ..... I do however feel that long hair ages women when they reach 50 or so and I really don't like seeing that .... Maybe I'm just jealous though as I've NEVER had long hair in my life lol. Enjoy ur long hair for a while yet Grin

LowCloudsForming · 25/01/2014 21:18

Answer - when you trip up on it.

RandomMess · 25/01/2014 21:21

I'm curious to see how long mine will grow, it's past waist length at the moment...

bunnymother · 25/01/2014 21:21

When it looks straggly/scrappy or hangs limply.

Starballbunny · 25/01/2014 21:28

ie mine at the moment and it's barely beyond a very very long Bob, but that's as long as it gets and it's splitting.

pigleychez · 25/01/2014 21:43

randomfemale Thanks.. I think they are gorgeous too! But im biased :)

Tried uploading a pic of me but MN wont let me. Keeps coming up with an error.
So long hair is good... ok.

bunny I know what you mean about the scraggyness. This trim should help tidy it up but wish I could sort out the frizz! Drives me nuts! A colour usually leaves my hair super shiney but that only last a while.
Looks lovely when I straighten it too but never seem to have the time for that!

Mine is usually between my waist and the top of my bum pockets. I'm nearly 34. I think it's looks bad when it's not looked after properly, age doesn't necessarily come into it.

I don't think mine is too long, I don't get it cut as often as I would if it was a lot shorter but it's tidy, it has a nice wave to it and I get a lot of positive comments, I have a hairdresser who loves it and is really good (hard to find when you have long hair!) she's a mobile hairdresser but her main job is at a hair school and sometimes she will tell me to book an appointment because something would be better done at school (and then I get it free too!) I need to go to school and get my hair dyed again soon.

pigleychez · 25/01/2014 22:03

Managed to get a not very goodpic of me up on my profile. My hair is much shorter in this picture though. I try not to have my picture taken very often as its usually depressing!

No such thing as too long! I've seen beautiful bum length hair, and you can do amazing up dos. Check out the long hair community website.

MusicalEndorphins · 26/01/2014 00:09

Your hair look beautiful in the picture, I think you can wear it long as long as it looks healthy(it does) and doesn't make you look tired(it doesn't). Flaunt it while you've got it.

SecretWitch · 26/01/2014 00:13

I think you look beautiful. Your hair appears to be in very good health.

Your daughter's are adorable! They look like they enjoy each other :)

MusicalEndorphins · 26/01/2014 00:13

How about this, or would you loose your wave at this length?

Coumarin · 26/01/2014 05:33

Personally I think bra strap length but your hair looks in great condition and has a nice wave to it so if you're happy with it then an inch to get the ends healthy would be fine.

(I agree about your little girls btw. That pic of them smiling at each other is gorgeous. Smile )

Coumarin · 26/01/2014 05:37

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is amazing for sorting out frizzies. Although I don't see any sign of that on your pic.

It gets mixed reactions on here so you could get a small tube for about £6 ish to try out before shelling out on a tub. I love it myself.

Not sure you need anything but thought I'd mention it.

ENormaSnob · 26/01/2014 05:56

Personally, i think over an inch longer than bra strap looks unstylish iyswim? Like its just there.

If you like it though, thats what matters.

DrNick · 26/01/2014 06:00

Small of back = too long

DrNick · 26/01/2014 06:01

Your hair is too curtain like. Pulls down too much. Plus a fringe would work I think

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 06:31

Take it from someone who will be 50 next birthday -- enjoy looking young while you can.

You can do much to look sophisticated without aging yourself. Look at your clothes and shoes and accessories and get rid of things that teenagers also wear. Think Converse shoes.

Your DDs are gorgeous Smile

DrNick · 26/01/2014 06:33

She's asking about her hair.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 06:37

She's asking how she can look sophisticated.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 06:39

You can look sophisticated at any age and with hair of any length.

SunnyL · 26/01/2014 07:08

2 years ago my hair was down to the small of my back when I got it cut to bob length. I tried kidding myself on for a while that I liked it. What I didnt realise is how much longer I had to spend styling it to make it look good. I even had to use straighteners which I never use except for nights out.

Once I finally decided to grow it again I asked DH why didn't he say anything when i cut it short and he practically wailed at me how sad he was when I cut my hair because he loved it so much.its now halfway to my bra strap and looks much much better. Im aiming for an inch below my bra strap.

Im 33.
