A Nice Watch

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 08:47

I have never had a fancy watch - the fanciest has been a £50 Swatch Blush - but I have recently gone back to work (where a watch is very useful to me) and my before-Mat-Leave £30 one is looking quite shabby (a link has dropped off it etc).
My birthday is coming up, I think i am ready for a Grown Up watch in my life Grin
I have no taste for things like watches/jewellry/ handbags - MN, tell me what to get, and how much will it cost me Shock

Skagen is a nice brand.

foolssilver · 25/01/2014 10:55

I have a nice Michael Kors one, so of the styles are quite blingy which isn't really me so I chose a plain oversize stainless steel one. Most are about £200. Had mine for about 4 years now and still going strong.

Nombrechanger · 25/01/2014 10:59

Are you looking for a leather strap or metal?
Everyday casual or everyday blingy?
Which colour metal? Silver/gold/rose gold?

buttercrumble · 25/01/2014 11:06

How about this

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 11:55

Thanks all - I will look Skagen. I think I DO like Michael Kors, will have a look at those also. I like sparkly stuff Blush but feel I should restrain myself with a watch as I often have various bracelets on.

I quite like that Pandora one buttercrumble but not sure if I like the mesh strap. Plus I have a Pandora bracelet on the other wrist so it might be overkill!

Good questions Nombrechanger, thank you. I like leather and silver. Not gold. Maybe rose gold.
Everyday blingy I guess as it's for work. I wouldn't bother wearing it at home. (I only work twice a week, and dress up for it).

I have a Longines watch - it was expensive (a present) but still going strong and looking lovely about 15 years later. More classic than bling I guess

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 12:20

Ha ha goingmadinthecountry - you have sucked me into a strange new world of expensive Swiss watches now, I really like this:

Out of my league

But my budget is more like £200 sadly!! Shame as that's the first one I've liked so far...clearly I have expensive watch tastes, who knew!!

Nothing wrong with a bit of sparkle Countess, MK may be the way to go as lots of choice on level of sparkle.

You could also look at Marc Jacobs. Some of them are nice.

Theoldhag · 25/01/2014 16:07

I was given a stunning citizen Eco drive watch, pretty mother of pearl face, clear sapphire cover and little diamonds around the casing. Really very lovely two tone bracelet strap and it is waterproof. These are solar powered and are very long lasting and attractive watches.

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 16:45

Yes I do like Nombre - I actually am coming round to Rose Gold in those. I wear mostly silver but do wear one gold ring so I guess it will all look ok together. Thanks!

Theoldhag I will have a look thanks Smile

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 20:03

Thanks lila. Actually as long as the brand is sold at, ahem, a certain popular department store, I will get a staff discount Wink We do Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors so I will have a good look.

I'd also say Skagen. I'm forever breaking watches, but my Skagen has already lasted 1.5 years and looks really classy (I think )

TheCountessOlenska · 25/01/2014 20:25

Which one have you got Roobie?

I want it to look classy not tarty... but i don't trust my own taste. I like Ugg boots!!

I have this Skagen watch:

Had it 11 years and still going strong.

I also have a small one with a navy leather strap (can't find it on Amazon).

Amazon have a really good selection.

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 25/01/2014 21:39

I'm going through a bit of a Vivienne Westwood stage atm and got myself a lovely little watch recently.

RiojaHaze · 25/01/2014 21:41

I've got a gorgeous Marc Jacobs one that is rose gold and gun metal. From asos, will see if I can find it still.

TawdryTatou · 25/01/2014 21:42

I got a Hamilton one for Christmas. I love it.

RiojaHaze · 25/01/2014 21:44

www.watchpro.com/13816-collection-marc-by-marc-jacobs-aw12/ this one!
Had to have links taken out of it but get loads of compliments.

bonvivant · 25/01/2014 21:44

I'm after a Skagen.

Fozzleyplum · 25/01/2014 23:01

I'd say that if you're going to have one really good watch to wear most of the time, you need to think carefully about whether you'd prefer a modern one, or a retro classic.

My style tends towards the traditional/classic, and away from obvious labels. My "grown up" watch, which I bought with a legacy from an old friend, is a Longines Evidenza. This model:
england.olx.co.uk/longines-evidenza-ladies-watch-l2-142-4-73-4-iid-102689441
I hasten to add that, when I bought it a few years back, it didn't cost anywhere near as much as the one in the link, though!

If you're interested in a high end, classic watch, bear in mind that you can get some reasonably-priced second hand ones which have been reconditioned and have a guarantee.

Beaverfeaver · 26/01/2014 05:10

I would recommend Christopher Ward watches.

They are becoming well respected in the watch world which means their prices are only increasing.

My DH has 2 and I have one.

I also have the Marc Jacobs watch linked to up the thread by others but I find it far too heavy and clunky for daily wear.

My daily watch is a classic Tag Link which I love, but hate the current designs.

If I was to buy another watch now, I might go for another Christopher Ward or a Karl Lagerfield, I also really like the Vivian Westwood one linked to up thread
