BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 02/02/2014 17:23

Hello all! Sunday night already :(

Hope everyone's had a great weekend. Was out with DP last night in Camden, we went for dinner and cocktails here then more drinks elsewhere and we stayed in a hotel after (sort of to celebrate end of January, busy month for us work wise). Explored the markets today which was fun! Wore my new peach DKNY top last night with j brand trousers, pistols and gold earrings.

Dry glad the shed party was fun.

Because have an amazing time and hope you get the upgrade!

BecauseIsaidS0 · 02/02/2014 17:49

Thanks, ladies! My wedding was actually six months ago Blush but because last year was insane for DH and I with work, the wedding, and the house, we are only managing to go on honeymoon now. I'm all packed and ready to go Grin

Mignonette · 02/02/2014 18:16

You might find this article by Hannah Betts in the Telegraph interesting as it discusses the pressures on Women to see weight loss as the Uber achievement even when resulting from dangerous physical illness.

Why is thinness the ultimate female ambition?

BecauseIsaidS0 · 02/02/2014 18:33

Mignonette, when I was 17 I had a horrible riding accident that landed me in hospital with tubes into my throat all the way down to my stomach for weeks.

When I finally left hospital, positively skeletal, many of my friends told me I looked fantastic Shock

Mignonette · 02/02/2014 18:36

Because How awful. Sad

Yes I have experienced similar including the fashion photographer BF of a close friend telling me i looked fantastic when I weighed six stone and was practically transparent with illness.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 02/02/2014 18:40

What I find the most interesting of it all is that so many of us aspire to be really thin, and then when a woman starves herself into a thinness that is not her natural shape, most likely she will be really miserable because, frankly, being hungry is miserable. Is looking great in clothes worth that misery?

I got very thin once when going through a particularly painful breakup. I could walk into a shop and try anything and know that I would look fashion-pretty in it, but man, I'm so much happier now that I need to chose my clothes rather carefully but I'm loved up with DH and cooking a great dinner for us both.

Mignonette · 02/02/2014 18:46

That will always be the rub in a society where the 'idealised' and fetishised shape for Women is one that is genetically endowed to very few. Tall and very slim is not going to happen for many. And rigorous maintenance of weight within very narrow parameters is unnatural and will always involve a degree of sacrifice. Women and Men have weight and fat distribution that naturally fluctuates with age, season, activity, emotions.

The easiest shape for high fashion to cater for is one with as little natural variation as possible from person to person hence tall, slim hips and little breast definition. it uses less (and costly) fabric and provides the etiolated shape that photographs well and is sharply defined. Nothing wrong with that- I love that look myself, but only on a woman who is intended to be that way. There's a world of difference between a healthy slender to thin woman and an unhealthy one.

LinusDKD · 02/02/2014 18:58

because have fun on your honeymoon! And I hope you get the upgrade!

Mignonette · 02/02/2014 19:15

Bon Voyage Because. Smile

OneLittleLady · 02/02/2014 19:16

Safe travels Because hope you have a brilliant time Smile

MarshaBrady · 02/02/2014 19:28

yep I agree with that Mig. We're not all meant to look the same.

There's another thread about Philip Seymour Hoffman, I gasped when I read it Sad. Loved him as an actor.

MarshaBrady · 02/02/2014 19:30

We're not all meant to head for the same style / clothing for that matter.

I have mostly been rocking the Philo look in black / grey gym kit with trainers and oversized Marant coat these days. (pre-run pre shower). The trainers aren't right at all, but nearly a look!

OneLittleLady · 02/02/2014 19:31

Too true Marsha we are not all designed to look the same. I would never judge someone for being thinner than me, I may show concern if they look sick and in need of help, the same as if someone was big and looked unwell with it but I have no issues with someone being of a different body type to me. The two things of 'thin is beautiful' and the opposite argument of 'real women have curves' make me so sad. Why should anyone feel like they have to conform to either of those things? The ideal is the ideal for YOUR body, not the one promoted in magazines or blogs or anywhere else. I hope that makes sense!

LinusDKD · 02/02/2014 19:33

I only saw the second Hunger Games film last week and Philip SH was wonderful in it. Such a waste!

LinusDKD · 02/02/2014 20:53

Who was into skorts last summer? Was it hopefully?

I like these but I doubt if I have the legs for them.

Drywhiteplease · 02/02/2014 22:23

Just watched Julianne Moore on Graham Norton. That woman is so beautiful. I adored her whole paired down look. Simple black shift dress, black strappy Loubs, the perfect shade of red lipstick for her colouring. I love her, so classy.

I so dislike the thin bashing. Seems a lot of people think this is acceptable somehow.

And what one says -You say it perfectly One!

Big shock about Philip Seymour Hoffman but so much guff being spoken about drug use- all the stereotypes coming out. One man waffled on about how Hoffman's work ethic and productivity meant he couldn't have had a serious drug problem. Not all subs users/addicts are dragging themselves along the gutter. I have encountered many high functioning addicts who lead lives of quiet desperation but manage to function well occupationally because they have maintenance prescriptions.

Anyway climbing down off my soapbox I just wanted to say that he was my favourite character actor since I saw him in Boogie Nights and 'Capote' is one of my all time favourite films. Very sad- first my imaginary husband Mr Lou Reed dies and now Hoffman. Hope that doesn't sound too narcissistic Sad

Annianni · 02/02/2014 23:18

Aw Mig... it's ok.
I love Boogie nights, not seen it for years though.

I have done nothing but cook/bake and eat today.
Chocolate cake, pizza, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup... Everything!

Ds1 was in charge of today's menu.
I think he had a nice day.

He had a little reality shock, I had explained several times that if you ask for monetary donations (as gifts because you're saving for a big thing)
Then you don't actually get much to open... Poor thing... He did have a few small gifts i'm not that mean
But they're all edible :o

Mignonette · 02/02/2014 23:19

Glad today went well Anni. Yes they don't realise how much they miss that little heap of presents do they?
